Everyone is in a bad place.
And following the killing of the Doctor and the Senator by Polaris in last season's finale, things are worse than ever not just for the underground, but for mutants everywhere.
Enter Reeva Paige.
The episode begins with the usual flashback scene with the leaders of the Hellfire club in a meeting. Except they're not the Hellfire Club as we'd previously thought, but something founded by it, pretty much in the same way the Xmen founded the Underground. This new club is called the Inner Circle.
The Flashback takes place just after the events at Atlanta which we learn was the brainchild of not the black stock-market guy we saw last season, but of Reeva Paige. The Inner Circle is riled. They had voted against the plan and Reeva was not supposed to have gone through with it. And in a shocking turn of events, she decides they are all not capable of building the better world for mutants she envisioned and, with the help of the Frost sisters, kills them all.
Fast forward six months later. Polaris has come to term. However, her powers have kept growing with the pregnancy and explode out of her with every cramp, forcing them to find the strongest place with no metal for the delivery itself.
Meanwhile, the remaining leaders of the Underground have tracked them all the way to Washington D.C., but with multiple Sentinel Services raid happening on Mutant communities per month and with little resources, they can't go further. Marcos is distraught about Lorna's leaving and the fact that he might not be there for his child's birth, and is willing to take any risks to find her. Lauren is shut up in herself, missing her brother terribly and having weirdly realistic dreams about him. John and Clariss are the only ones mildly happy and calm, as they've found love in each other and have a thriving relationship.
Caitlin is obsessed with finding Andy and, just like Marcos, is willing to do anything. They both go to find some mutant hackers (against the decision of the group). Caitlin gets grazed by a shot and we learn that the hacker they went to see, 'Wire' is scared stiff of the Inner Circle. However, they do manage to get some information on the Circle's financial activity. Reed has thrown himself into his new job as one of the Underground's leaders, trying to bring his family back together again.
Then Lorna goes into labour, just after she reveals her fears to Andy: The pregnancy could most likely go wrong, but he must not allow Reeva sacrifice the baby for her. She is rushed to the special labour room they set up for her in the special metal-less stronghold.
But it's not enough. Polaris is much stronger than they'd thought, and in labour pains, her powers reach far out, affecting the vehicles around the building and the city's power grid. As the entire city experiences piwer fluctuations. Marcos realises this is Lorna and they all jump into the car to track her, driving as frantically as possible to catch up to the delivery.
As she'd predicted, the delivery does run into problems. Lorna is too dissillusioned with the world to build up the strength to push her child out into it. Reeva and the Frosts act quickly, but contrary to what she'd thought and Andy had expected, they go to work building up her psych to allow both her abd the baby survive, showing her a world where mutants live in peace, power and acceptance... The world they were trying to build, where she and her friends had succeeded in ushering in a new dawn for mutantkind. She gains strength from this and pushes the baby out, naming her Dawn.
Unfortunately, Marcos and the rest are still a-ways off and with the fluctuations stopped, they find themselves with no way to continue the tracking, back to square one... And Marcos broken at missing the birth of his daughter.
