The Shape of Water (2017). Story of an adaptable, mutable and capable love...

Here is my second entry for the Triple AAA contest --> FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION (#01): "Favorite Directors"

Love is such a versatile feeling ... Only people who feel it can give it the way they want and live it as they wish. And in addition, the next sentence of today's movie confirms it:

The decade of the 1960s, the cold war is live and governments bleed any fighting opportunity. This is where Elisa's life takes place, a young and lonely life girl carries the consequences of a disease she suffered in childhood. This disease leaves her with a scar on her neck and sheds, condemning her to only communicate through sign language and to live a little isolated from others in a small apartment; where they spent the same day every day, including the preparation of 3 hard-boiled eggs and a moment of solitary pleasure in the bathtub. Elisa had only two close friends (Giles and Zelda) and a night custodian job in a government experiment laboratory.

One night, a kind of tank or vessel arrives in the square and full of monotony laboratory. Elisa, curious to want to know how much she is there, does her best to find out. When he succeeds, he encounters a species of humanoid amphibian that was captured in the Amazon. It is a strange creature, which scientists would use completely as a weapon to combat the Russian government, or contrary to not functioning as such, would then be killed and used for study. Elisa is shocked, and slowly approaches, with sign language, hard boiled eggs and music; creating a strong bond with this.

After a few days, Elisa learns that the heads of the government have decided to give an order of death to the amphibious man, that is why she decides to turn to Giles to help her get him out of the laboratory and then release him in a water channel that satisfies the physiological needs of the creature. Among all that, they arrive at the department of Elisa where they place the amphibious man in the bathtub and there he is kept with substance that he extracted from the laboratory with the help of Hoffstetler (lab worker, but in reality he is a spy who does not agree with the death of the creature). In Elisa's absences, the amphibious man goes out to eat a cat in the apartment next door, is found by Giles (owner of the apartment and the cat), in the midst of the scare the creature hurts his arm and returns in terror to the apartment Elisa It is here, where Giles, after a few hours, realizes some major changes in his own physical appearance, observes that his hair has come out (when he was bald) and also, he looks younger (he was a stunned sexagenary man).

Elisa and the creature, are closely related in something called love. But, the leader of the laboratory (Strickland) is not happy with the disappearance of an amphibious man, he wishes to recover them and suspecting everyone. He decides to follow one of the workers there, where he realizes he is conspired with Hoffstetler. The other spies die at the hands of the Machiavellian and tyrant Strickland, while Hoffstetler is coldly tortured; after so much suffering a little before death, he ends up involving Elisa and friends in the disappearance of the amphibious man. Then, Strickland goes to Zelda's house and submitting to her husband, ends up thinking that it is Elisa who has such a creature in the apartment.

Strickland goes to Elisa's apartment and is empty, but looking for news on where she might be; he manages to get a note, where he specifies the place where they will release an amphibious man. He goes quickly to the place and with a gun in hand he shoots Elisa and the amphibious man, but not this shot is only enough to hurt him. The humanoid man heals quickly and kills Strickland. Then, this takes Elisa in her arms and they jump into the water together; where he heals her completely and they realize everything that really happened: Elisa was actually a mermaid, which had been taken out of a swamp, and her lack of speech was not because of illness, but rather because they had extracted her the gills (Here the reason for the scar located in the neck)

A film greatly influenced by the romantic genre + fantasy, which describes a love that transcends beyond all the standards displayed and impregnated from the time in which the film is developed. This time of war, prejudice and tyranny, are well described and embodied by the characters. At the same time, I think it is a very heartfelt love story, perhaps something repeated within the theme of "Beauty and the Beast"; but Guillermo del Toro offers some twists on the film that are charming and achieve the desire of the spectator to enjoy him. I love the final overturn, Ohh Elisa is a mermaid? ... There all the loose nails take place. But, despite the similarity of species between the amphibious man and Elisa, I consider that the film conveys that love is everything we want it to be: Mutable, adaptable and capable....
