I felt that it was different and beautiful in its own way The story revolves around Eliza a deaf girl who works as a cleaner in a secret government laboratory and there she discovers a strange aquatic creature and her relationship with it begins to take a completely unexpected form.

I think that the movie provided a very good experience in terms of feeling and emotions The directing and colors were wonderful and made me feel that I was in a fantasy world but at the same time it was full of humanity and honest feelings The relationship that forms between Eliza and the creature made me feel how much loneliness can make a person search for love anywhere even if there is a creature that is not of the same kind.

But despite the visual beauty and strange romance in the movie I think that it is not for everyone I mean some people may find it a magical and different movie and other people may feel that it is strange and exaggerated The story itself is not traditional and it breaks many rules and this is what may not accept it for some But for me the movie was an experience worth watching because it was able to convey the idea of love and understanding in an unusual but very touching way.

I hope that anyone who loves movies that have fantasy with a romantic touch tries to watch this movie because visually and dramatically it is a unique experience It is not just a love story but a movie that opens the door to thinking about how feelings can transcend all barriers even if they are between a human and a completely different creature.

    My rating review ... (8 / 10)

Hello, internet people. Today I want to talk to you about a movie that I found quite bizarre but at the same time I was amazed, because Guillermo del Toro is one of the great directors that have made me fall in love with cinema, so let's break down this work of art.

    𝓗𝓲𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝓲𝓪 / 𝓢𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂

I don't even want to tell you the synopsis (beyond what you can understand from the trailer) because this movie is one of those that you have to see without having any idea. What I can say in this section is that clearly the script has a good structure and the dialogues are very good, this in turn brings good dynamism to the film and makes a good set of scenes.

The story is more than particular and it is really a symbolism, you should not stay with what you see literally but in the background that is wanted to tell through this story. What I learned from the film is that no matter where you come from, how you look, or how different you are, in the end, we are all the same, we all feel the same way and that is why as living beings we should respect each other and live together in peace.

One of my favorite aspects of film composition. In this film, as curious as it may seem (being Thalassophobic and Bat-phobic) my favorite shots are all those that have to do with water and most of the film presents a subtle sepia coloration that is not that I dislike, it looks good and gives us that feeling of watching an old story, but the bluish colorations and the play of light that there is every time water is present in a scene, in my opinion looks much more beautiful.

And it is curious because normally the sepia, amber, golden tones in photography, want to represent warmth and happiness, while the cold tones like black, gray, blue, represent the opposite, but in this Film, del Toro inverted this because his protagonist is a sea creature so what represents all the good things are the cold tones, he solved it by adding light and reflections, achieving a very nice and attractive effect, which makes us feel at ease every time Eliza (the protagonist) is in the company of our creature.

The shots are also very well cared for, I love how each one of them fits perfectly in what the scenes want to convey, it is an aspect that we almost do not realize but that plays a very important role, fundamental, better said.

    𝓢𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓽𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓴

It is an auditory delight from the beginning of the first track to the last. Some are more soothing and peaceful, others are imbued with a halo of mystery, while others even sound a bit "threatening" and of course, this is intended to make each interpretation accompany the scenes of the film very well. This is my favorite theme and if I'm not wrong, the main theme of the film:

The end of the film gives us a pretty important revelation that connects to one of the scenes in the film and that is that (SPOILER ALERT NEXT) Eliza is a mermaid. If we analyze the film, Eliza has a fascination for water, it is also said that as a baby she was found near a river, she has marks on her neck (supposedly where her vocal cords were removed in a surgical intervention) however, by the end of the film, when the protagonist jumps into the water with her and heals her, we also see that the alleged scars of the surgery become gills.

And what I believe is that, knowing that the creature has healing powers, it rather healed the birth gills that were clogged. Also when we see that the creature "got sick" and its scales are falling off, it may be an indication that Eliza, seeing herself out of the water as a baby, also lost her scales. If the hypothesis were true, that would also explain Eliza's attraction to the creature and also the ending.

It is a film that although it is very good in its story, it steals my sleep in its artistic section, that is, cinematographically speaking, it is a work of art and I am not surprised that it swept the academy awards at the time. Highly recommended although I must warn that it is not for all audiences.

This is a fantasy film directed by the great Guillermo del Toro, it is set in the 60s in the United States, especially in Baltimore, the protagonist is Elisa, a woman who is mute, because she was found with some marks on her neck when she was a child , she works as a cleaner in a government laboratory, that is where they have a very peculiar aquatic creature captive, it looks like a fish man, that is, it has both human and aquatic animal characteristics, the objective of scientists is to discover something importance of the creature, because in those years there are tense situations with the Russian government, however some of those involved say that they should open the creature to discover more things, but while the creature still lives in the pond it is constantly visited for Elisa who is taking care of him.

I really like that despite the fact that Elisa is mute, she can communicate by signs, but also because she has been used to communicating non-verbally all her life, it allows her to establish effective communication with the creature in the pond. I think it's great that even she gives egg for the creature to eat, she feels closer to the creature, but one day she discovers that the scientists by superior orders want to kill the creature so she devises a plan to get him out of there, for this she needed the help of a friend and a close friend.

    Source

Elisa's initial idea was to free the creature, but in the meantime she has it in the bathtub of her house and forms a relationship with it. Once things get complicated, she decides to release him in a canal when there is a storm so that he can be free in the water, which is where she should always have been, but things don't work out the way they're supposed to. I don't want to tell you the end, but among the most peculiar traits of the aquatic creature is that this man has feelings, he loves Elisa, he also has incredible healing abilities, he is a creature that can heal but at the same time is very vulnerable outside the water, so it can't live outside with humans.

The marine world is incredibly diverse, even today the species in the deep sea are not fully known, I am not saying that this fish man can exist, but what I am saying is that humanity knows very little, an example of this are the whales, who have their own languages, their customs and culture that they transmit from generation to generation and even when they may be of the same species because they are located in different areas, they may have a different language and adapted hunting style, but what some they shouldn't is that whales are mammals that once they evolved as terrestrial at one point in their evolutionary history decided to return to the sea and thus modify their body to the aquatic environment but without ceasing to be mammals, then imagine the evolutionary possibilities that could happen in thousands or millions of years if we human beings suddenly return to an aquatic environment, we will be able to develop mechanisms for swimming or breathing underwater (something similar to the protagonist of Waterworld), once I read that in a certain part of the world a tribe of people was the only one in the world capable of supporting without breathing underwater, this is due to their customs of seeking sustenance under the sea. Movies like the shape of water make me think a lot about the evolution of living beings and how the sea could have thousands of species that have not yet been discovered.

    Source

The film The Shape of Water, beyond touching on a theme of romance and fantasy, I think it deals with the issue of respect that human beings should have towards other species, of how scientific research should not cross certain limits, it is not just about a being aquatic with human characteristics. I think that the imagination can fall short if we compare it with reality, besides that the sea is immense and we will never know what is really there.

  4. [ENG-ESP] FILM REVIEW: 'THE SHAPE OF WATER' (2017), A LOVE STORY THAT MAKES A MARK@universoperdido1901d

    ENGLISH

Within the poetic propositions within cinema, there is a great abundance of fantasy stories that tell us about love, some fail to captivate us or deafen us with a tender sound, although they do provoke stimulation, they do not manage to excite us in such a way that they enrapture us through the simplicity of a story about differences.

*Guillermo del Toro, along with his fantastic universe full of strange creatures, has always had the audacity to impress us, although it is not easy to maintain the same result, as with Pacific Rim and The Scarlet Summit, we think of other stories of his authorship as Labyrinth of the Faun and this one, which I will comment below, which has been one of the most impressive in his entire career as a film director.

The Shape of Water' is a film where fantasy and romanticism go hand in hand. It was premiered on August 31, 2017 at the Venice festival and on December 8 of the same year in the United States. It was directed by Guillermo del Toro and also written by him together with screenwriter and television producer Vanessa Taylor. The film has received good reviews and acquired major awards and nominations at the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. Awards include Best Director, Best Score and Best Picture.

The story makes a proposal of love towards cinema, being about a young mute girl named Elisa Esposito(Sally Hawkins), a cleaning employee in a high-security government laboratory who one day meets an amphibious creature (Doug Jones) who is imprisoned and subjected to brutal experiments, Gradually she begins to have affection for the creature, so she will elaborate a plan with her friends Zelda Delilah Fuller (Octavia Spencer) and Giles (Richard Jenkins), to free the monster.

The plot and what it wants to convey to us is not something we consider "original", however, the way it is told occupies a great significance in our perception. In it we can find influences from films such as The Monster of the Black Lagoon, Free Willy or the famous fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast, it is a mixture of great stories of cinema, even Del Toro has been accused of plagiarism for using such prominent references in this work.

The perception of beauty is contrasted with a deeper intrusion into feelings, with differences and good hearts taking the lead in this story. The film makes us explore a world where the good guys and the bad guys have a struggle for love, increasing the desire to let it emerge or not. On the side of the bad guys we have Colonel Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon), a government man who was charged with guarding the "asset" or "resource", which is the name given to the creature. He is a ruthless, rigid man, capable of annihilating anyone to achieve his purposes without an apparent sign of humanity, but, through his tough layer of psychopathic man, we find a family man living in a nice suburb who seems to be absent from this one.

Strickland is the nemesis of love, despite bearing the traits of the "good", he is a white man, with a social status superior to that of his antagonists, who want to protect the creature. Elisa, who has lost her voice since she was a baby, her vocal cords were taken away, for others, she is seen as an inferior being because of her condition, just like her friend and co-worker Zelda, a black woman who besides having to deal with social segregation, has an indifferent and good-for-nothing husband. Then we have Giles, Elisa's neighbor and friend, an elderly homosexual with a great gift for painting, who presents a great feeling of frustration and loneliness, not only for not being able to find love but also for the fact of not being able to succeed again as an artist.

    [Source](https://www.nytimes.com/es/2017/12/06/espanol/resena-la-forma-del-agua-shape-of-water-guillermo-del-toro.html)

The film is set in the 60's, an era where we find all these social problems conjugated in a single feature film. Here the good guys are the inferior, the undervalued, the imperfect, who are threatened by the superiors, by those who rule society, who unjustly seek to destroy a noble and innocent creature who understands the body language of her protector, and who can also understand the affection that her lover has for her and he reciprocates. This is an introspection that, despite the differences, the concept of love remains the same.

The message that Del Toro wanted to convey from the title was that love has no form, no conception or theory, it is only a sensation, a feeling that emerges from deep within and overcomes any barrier. The origins are irrelevant, because they do not fit in this compression, and it is that metaphorical value full of simplicity and greatness that makes the idea conveyed by this film has permeated more than in its photography, costumes and cinematic production. I give it a rating of 9/10 and, of course, it will forever remain on my list of films I would watch again.

Oscar winner 2018, is The Shape of water really the movie of the year 2018? It's hard to give a definitive answer to that question. It was certainly one of the most beautiful and above all well made films. Thanks to its director: Guillermo Del Toro. With this film we return to the era of the "Labyrinth of the Faun", a dreamlike and incredible fairy tale that wants to be both a tribute to cinema and something deeper and more current. The film does not have the authoritativeness of "The Hidden Thread" by Anderson, it does not have the vision and editing of the Nolanian "Dunkirk", it lacks the photography of "Blade Runner" by Villeneuve, or the classicism of "The Post" and certainly lacks the delicacy of our "Call Me By Your Name" and the eclecticism of "Three Posters to Ebbing" but the creature of Del Toro has something that others have not been able to demonstrate: the lightness of telling an incredible fairy tale and convincing the audience that it could be true.

Personally, I believe that the great power of the "Water Form" lies in its ability to transcend the boundaries of disbelief and make us believe that there really is a universe where a sea creature can be a God and can fall in love with an outcast of society, a princess without a voice as defined by the character played by the excellent Richard Jenkins at the beginning of the story. Very good, though not very original, the stunt to overturn the monstrosity in the appearance of the sea creature on the monstrosity in the facts and soul of the villain of the film, played by the ever excellent Michael Shannon. The Cold War-style setting is a wise choice by Del Toro to make the struggle for the monstrous creature and its subsequent escape plausible. Honorable mention for the ever excellent Octavia Spencer, but stealing the scene for once is her partner and Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins in the first real role of a certain level. Her performance as Elisa is light, dreamy and suave and she is always the protagonist of the best scenes of the film. Among all of them, in my opinion, the scene of the submerged dance inside the bathroom of Elisa's house, completely covered with water, deserves a special attention. Here is the water, the real protagonist of the film. Here, too, is Del Toro's splendid work, which recalls from the title the real thread of the film. Water is the realm of the creature, water is the element of the birth and abandonment of the orphan Elisa, it is in water that the cult scenes of the film emerge, it is under water that the epilogue will take place and in water the rebirth will take place. The shape of the water, that is to say the adaptation to the one we love, the taking shape according to the envelope we choose to love. A shapeless form, a continuous reference to love: for the cinema, for the human being and for love itself.

Trionfatore degli Oscar 2018, The Shape of water è davvero il film dell'anno 2018?

  6. The Shape of Water: I'm not as gaga as other people@gooddream2949d

While I really enjoyed this film and especially like the directing style of Guillermo del Toro, I am not as enthralled by it as it seems most people are. Don't get me wrong: I think it is great and I recommend others watch it as well. I just don't think it was as epic as the professional critics are making it out to be.

    1 NZhRKM4xvz27VLl5vJ73Sg.jpeg

Del Toro is famous in my mind for his work with Pan's Labyrinth, which, if you don't know what that is go check it out because that was epic. In this one he uses a similar style but uses only one non-human in the Shape of Water. The film is absolutely beautiful, the acting is excellent and the musical score is wonderful. So now I guess i will move on to what it was about this film that bothered me.

The lead character Elisa, is a mute who lands a job as a cleaner at a government facility. It turns out this facility is a top-secret government facility that has a top-secret creature in it.

    the-shape-of-water-9.jpg

A love story ensues between the two of them and blah blah blah, you know the routine here. Watch the movie in order to see if you are grossed out by it or not. I wasn't necessarily turned off by the beastiality because love knows no boundaries i guess. The problem I had was this:

Elisa and her cleaning crew seem to kind of come and go as they please inside of a top-secret government facility. Sure Elisa is concerned about getting caught but she seems to spend hours upon hours in the off limits room just hanging out and no one ever seems to take notice. She even brings in record players to entertain Merman with.

I personally worked for several U.S. Federal government agencies and their security and mistrust of their employees is absurd and absolute. If i brought in an unapproved pencil it would be taken off of me by security. Something the size of a record player? Forget that.

In my job there were certain rooms that we were not allowed to make copies in despite the fact that other than the copy machines, there was nothing else in the room (or was there? Maybe there was a secret entrance to an underground lair in that room!) The security protocols in place would never allow for any members of the staff to be capable of just wandering into a room that housed an extremely important aspect of the military in it - For cleaners or anyone else.

So i suppose I should just suspend my disbelief for the sake of a story but this, in my mind, was kind of like the ubiquitous "tripping over a log while running away from a killer in the woods." It was just too impractical for me to accept the rest of the film and I suppose that is my fault because it was necessary for Elisa to be a low-ranking member of the facility in order for the love story to be as impactful as it was.

There was also the scene where she is able to fill up an entire room with water in her apartment and the impracticality behind this was just maddening to me.

    povelhcuv3udpl19x3cg.jpg

Her bathroom is relatively large and yet it completely fills up with water in, i dunno, half an hour or so. I remembered while watching this scene a time in my own life regarding water. I was trying to fill up a 4x11 meter swimming pool using 2 hoses at full blast and it took several days. Also, presuming that the door to the bathroom is not, in-fact, submarine-grade cast iron but is instead made of wood and with a standard latch it is pretty remarkable that it was capable of keeping what was bound to be about 80,000 lbs of water inside the room without breaking. I flashed back to college when my roommate had a bar with a fish-tank in it, and put it in the center of the room where the structural integrity of building is weakest, we could hear the support beams creaking and one of them snapped and collapsed into the apartment below us (we stopped filling up the tank at that point.)

Maybe I am being a jerk here but when i watch movies, practicality is something that I need in my storylines. Sorry, but this is the way that I am.

The movie is beautiful and if you can ignore the fact that the military is definitely NOT as laid back about security as is presented in the movie and if you don't have a problem ignoring fundamentals of physics then I think it will be worth watching.

It did win Best Picture after all.

  7. Review Film: The Shape Of Water (2017)@film-trail3001d

Guillermo del Toro called The Shape of Water, which brought him an Oscar for Best Director (as his film won Best Picture), as an expression of the things that filled his worries as an adult especially about love, after in the previous 9 films del Toro visited the dream and her fears as a child. Maybe he was afraid the world was running out of love. The Shape of Water begins del Toro's desire to see the inter-species love story from the Black Lagoon (1954) ending happily, with the intention of making his remake rejected by the studio. And obviously, he told the whole scene with love and tenderness, Love is not just a romantic level, not just a fellow human, but between living things. Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) the female protagonist is a speech woman who becomes a janitor in a secret laboratory owned by the government. Elisa next door to Giles (Richard Jenkins), an old artist whose career is stuck, is also a gay man. Looking at each other's condition, both are entitled to fear if there is no love for them. As a result, when Elisa meets "Amphibian Man" (Doug Jones) who is confined, tortured, made into laboratory experiments where he works, he just wants to love the unfortunate creature who is also alone in this fear.

Taking the setting of the era of the 60s when the Cold War, del Toro with Vanessa Taylor (Hope Springs, Divergent) got plenty of provisions to deliver the message through the script. This is the time when hatred, suspicion, fear, all negative emotions culminate. The narrative of the opening scene when we were brought into the "underwater room" with the beautiful music of Alexandre Desplat-which Jenkins read contained the phrase "And the tale of love and loss, and the monster, who tried to destroy it all". The "monster" here is the abominable colonel Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon) and the bully, American and Russian faction who will use and even kill the Fishman until the racist cafe waiter is homophobic.

Indeed the issues of The Shape of Water are still relevant, but the use of the background is the right decision. Bringing it to the modern order has the potential to create distractions. Audiences who are increasingly thirsty for "critical films" will be inclined to pay attention to the issue rather than the main story. In this way, the various elements become limited to subtext that is enriching, while the main focus remains about the romance of fantasy. Also related to his old background, Desplat music is derived from a classic Hollywood treat; dreamy, thick fantasy nuances that radiate beauty, hope, and imagination. The beauty that comes from the production design team, including in packing home Elisa is like coming from the dark fairy tale world, something that often becomes the playground del Toro, I imagine del Toro pointing at the scene with glittering eyes, big smile, full of positive aura. The poetic opening and closing scenes cannot be produced by a morose man. Of course, he was also awarded the creativity plus high imagination, which proved when musical moments "impromptu" began to fill. The moment that begins and ends with a neat tidy transition to represent the hearts of Elisha, the character that became the media Sally Hawkins shows the meaning of sincerity in acting. Hawkins gives a performance that is able to instantly steal the feelings of the audience only through a smile. When Elisha was happy, I was happy. When Elisha fell in love, that love contributed to my feelings.

For Guillermo del Toro, love is shaped like water. Can not be defined, but its existence always fills the empty spaces, then change to adjust the form of space. We need films like The Shape of Water. Movies that in addition to talking about love, also made with love, without forgetting the importance of the aesthetic side.

  9. 'The Shape of Water' by Guillermo del Toro Review@namiks3035d

    The Shape of Water.jpg

Guillermo del Toro is known for his passion for strange, terrifying monster designs, each with their own symbolism that represents the obscure nature of society and human nature.

The Shape of Water carries that level of depth, yet focuses on displaying one of humankind's greatest weaknesses: segregation. Segregation isn't bound to the colour of a person's skin, and it's evident throughout the film; our protagonist may be mute, but she's a female in the 60's, she has no voice in society, the amphibian is humanoid and capable of intelligent thought, yet also has no voice as a result of communicative complications.

Each character in the film holds a specific weight to them that connects them together, despite their individuality. The film follows these characters and gives them a voice regarding saving a life that is once again similar to theirs: a segregated voice; a minority that's ignored and seen as something of lesser worth than the majority.

The Shape of Water isn't a narrative of a woman falling in love for a fish, it's a narrative that explores the celebration of individuality; going for what you believe in and being true to yourself over the expectations and flawed rules that society throws upon all of us. Our protagonist is also not from this land, incapable of speaking the common language, forced into a culture that doesn't fit her.

There's plenty to enjoy in this film, whether it's the distinct setting and colourful visuals that grow brighter throughout the film, or the way it progresses its story with our protagonist not saying a single word and simply speaking through facial expressions and actions. Outside of the blooming love between the characters, there's an entire other narrative that speaks out about society and how our emotions extend beyond it, into something much greater.

  11. "The Shape of Water" by Guillermo del Toro. Time for Oscar? Movie review.@godflesh3079d

    22528548_10154993121948015_3463549741477904053_n_large.jpg

I'm sure Guillermo del Toro has discovered the big secret – have fun with the things you create so you can work effortlessly and with endless pleasure. That is why his films have a special radiance, like a halo of a different color, because he has put a piece of his soul in each of them and they have been an integral part of it within (at least) several years. "The Shape of Water", the latest creation the crazy, wild and super-talented Mexican, embraces viewers with the ultimate greenery of patinated bronze - with a sense of security, uniqueness and fabulous uniqueness. A story can always start with "once upon a time" - this is the magic formula capable of unlocking imagination in which mysterious water containers are guarded more than half a century in the secret laboratory of ruthless agent and in these water reservoirs a strange being tortured, charms a lonely cleaner, and she pulls him out of the forced prison, and after a lot of gaits, they both find freedom and merge their hearts. In summary, the plot sounds strange, crazy and somewhat candied, and might have become such a movie if all the metamorphoses did not happen in Guerrero del Toro's head. He was the daring storyteller who chooses princess of his story charming, but there is no cleaner, place a fateful decision in exceptional circumstances and throws it into the arms of a creature of mysterious latitudes, which resembles a human amphibian. Their love story goes as a lily of water - unexpectedly, white and unperturbed by words unspoken by prejudice, instinctive, passionate and fearless. In the name of that feeling she risk everything because her life would have no meaning if she doesn’t find the strength to follow her intuition - she felt that her only chance to see her real impact is in the eyes of one who accepts it unconditionally - no fictional pretensions, no social conventions, no universal fakes.

    screen-shot-2017-09-14-at-9-49-54-am1.png

Quite deliberately del Toro has arranged all his characters beyond traditional expectations - phantasmagorical, lopsided, incontinent, neklishirani, unusual and totally unexpected, they create the eyes of viewers truly magical network that covers the mirror of reality. Cinema is precisely this - magic - and with its help the story comes alive outside, beyond and despite all the known tricks. One of the brave director's moves is the extraordinary casting - with Sally Hawkins's soft tenderness, with the patient, strange strangeness of his loving Doug Jones, Michael Shannon's cruel chameleon seamlessness, Richard Jenkins's delicate vulnerability, Michael Schulbarg's exact inclusions, and Octavia Spencer. Similar to the way del Toro sculpt his amphibian prince - complete with costume, impressive lighting details with charm that exudes power, he formed the other characters and a skilled puppeteer puts everyone at the right place in history. Pragmatic and logical reasons why the action takes place in the middle of the last century - except that it is possible to use ready decor, this is the time in which it is possible to happen meeting versatile conspiracies, including spy intervention by the a Soviet agent. For the overall atmosphere, the creators of the team are also responsible for all the details - from carts with cleaning materials in the secret laboratory to carpet patterns and the library in the storyteller's living room, to the rescue bath tub and plush cinema seats that revives the old lanes downstairs. Danish Danus Lavustsen's camera and lights virtuoso creates a truly authentic atmosphere, and you can’t guess in the age of computer-generated miracles how the poetic underwater scenes that began and ended the film - such mastering techniques and ingenuity have received our unreserved admiration ...

    039_z627r_SOW_04929.jpg

Built with a budget of less than $ 20 million, over 35 festivals literally around the world, it received over 200 awards and nominations for only the last four months of 2017 after its premiere in Venice (where his author left with Sergio Leone ", Best known as one of the most prestigious awards in the world of cinema -" The Golden Lion "), honored by almost every cinema critic community in the world as one of the masterpieces of 2017, the work of Guyermo del Toro deserves all the superlatives that are sacking at his address. It's no accident that the Hollywood foreign press awards the film is leading with nominations in seven categories - people like beautifully narrated stories, this is the truth. Whatever obstacles there are to overcome the main characters, they must love - and even with the power of feeling they will be able to defeat the evil that is always on their way. No matter how old / known / worn out these postulates, they always work flawlessly. The tremendous dignity of "The Shape of Water" is precisely the company that Del Toro offers us - daring, charming, intoxicatingly gentle. Forget the elemental comparisons with the "beauty and beast" leitmotif, pay no attention to the ubiquitous accusations of "seeking social justice" (del Toro's characters have a different social, racial and sexual affiliation, but that doesn’t really matter!) - If you can’t dive into the story, if you do not fascinate your love story, if traditional skepticism is your second nature and prevent you from seeing this movie with unbiased eyes, then you, dear spectators, may have lost the ability to be amazed vate and fun with something as natural as fascinating stories, beautiful story about ordinary people and their feelings. Del Toro offers it to us with an open heart and a devil's wink, and we, since we are his sincere admirers, thank him in absentia. And (maybe) it's time for an Oscar.

(The Shape Of Water, 2017)@panza3079d

  13. A Geeky Guy's Movie Guide to The Shape of Water (2017)@hanshotfirst3097d

Earlier today, I sat down to write about my top ten movies of 2017. Then I realized that I had not seen Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. Based on the buzz it is receiving around the internet, I thought it had a strong chance of landing on my top ten list. Many seem to feel it may be the absolute best movie of the year.

I am not one of those people.

However, that does not mean it is not a very high quality film. When I was childless thirty-year old with plenty of disposable income and time on my hands, I probably would have had a much higher opinion of this movie. Unfortunately, these days, my time is very precious.

That is the mentality I have when I write my reviews. I pretend I am writing for my friends in a similar stage of their lives as I am in. Therefore, a non-family movie has to be exceptional in order for me to suggest a friend spend their valuable time on it. (Kids movies have an added bonus of being "family time" so I am far more forgiving).

The following contains the same spoilers that are found in the movie's previews.

If you grew up in the U.S. in the 1960s or 1970s, you undoubtedly saw the 1954 movie *The Creature From the Black Lagoon* (That is one of the unavoidable side effects of having only four TV channels to choose from). If after watching that movie, you thought to yourself, "Huh. I wonder what it would be like if that creature were brought to the U.S. and fell in love with a woman who is mute?" Then this movie is made for you!

Because that is the exact plot of the movie. Just to be clear. The movie's premise is not that a creature similar to the Creature from the Black Lagoon comes to the U.S.... it is the exact same creature.

The Shape of Water is basically the sequel to 1954s The Creature from the Black Lagoon... as a love story.

I realize that I said that three different ways. That was intentional. If you are going to see this movie, you must understand what you are getting yourself into. If you fully understand and have not given the movie a hard pass, then please continue reading.

But wait. That sounds ridiculous. How can this still be a "high quality film"?

It has nearly every element of a great movie (if you can get past a completely absurd premise).

*The attention to detail in all of the sets as well as the characters that fill them are amazing.*

The basic story is fascinating. During the Cold War, The Creature from the Black Lagoon is brought to a U.S. government lab to be tested own in hopes of the knowledge aiding America's efforts to put a man on the moon. There are spies, love interests and an incredibly creepy villain.

All of the characters, and the actors who portray them, are incredible. Despite the fact that she cannot speak, the audience falls in love with the lead, Elisa, brilliantly portrayed by Sally Hawkins. Her two main friends played by Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Richard Jenkins are wonderful. As always, Michael Shannon does a perfect job as the sinister villain.

The visuals are stunning. Not only does the Creature look incredibly real, the sets are extraordinary. Del Toro brilliantly captured the feeling of being in a lab in the 1960s.

The movie also included a bit of humor that went over very well with the audience.

The film even has a pretty deep message. This is clearly an allegory for racism and other forms of discrimination. It was a very clever way to make the point that the human race still has a long way to go in the area of treating each other with dignity and respect. Although this may turn some viewers off by being "too preachy", I enjoyed the shrewd way the theme was woven into the story.

So the story, characters, acting, visuals, humor, were all on point and it has a clever message. How the heck is this not a great movie?

Here's the problem. The movie is 120 minutes long. All of the aforementioned strengths would have been perfectly suited for a 42 minute episode of The Twilight Zone or Tales from the Dark Side.

*If you read "Twilight Zone" and pictured glistening vampires... you are much younger than I.*

There are so many unnecessary scenes and details about the side characters that it brought the movie to a screeching halt. Actually, it was more like the movie never got up to full speed. In addition, the movie has two distinct pieces: spy and love. Sadly, it does not find the right balance between the two and ends up being far too heavily skewed toward the supernatural romance. It would be a great date movie... if it weren't about the Creature from the Black Lagoon. I'd say the demographic for this type of love story is rather small. I would have preferred that the spy angle be the main focus.

So should you see The Shape of Water?

    Let's see...

Do you want to see a love story about a human and the Creature from the Black Lagoon?

If the answer is "no" you can stop.

If it is "yes" then the next question is; do you have a lot of time on your hands?

If "yes", then see it in the theater so you can truly enjoy the visuals.

If "no", then wait and rent it.

This might be a movie best enjoyed in more than one sitting. Perhaps it would have made a compelling two or three episode TV show (although I'd say one would cover it).

*There's not a lot of this type of excitement in the movie. I wish there were a little more.*

Before I do the Geeky Guide, it is important to note that this is not a kids movie. It is rated "R" for good reason. There is a significant amount of nudity, sexuality, violence and swearing.

The Shape of Water takes the classic horror film and turns it into a romantic drama. Watching this film, I remember thinking how much the creature reminded me of the Creature From the Black Lagoon. That was intentional. Writer/Director Guillermo Del Toro was inspired to create this story based on his childhood viewing of that film, wishing the Creature would get the girl. He pitched the idea years ago, but was rebuffed. Now we get to see his vision brought to life.

Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) is mute. Her daily routine begins with an evening wake up call, aggressive bathtub masturbation, preparing a couple of meals, stopping in to visit her neighbor Giles (Richard Jenkins) and then boarding a bus to the Occam research center near Baltimore where she is a cleaning lady. The routine is an exercise in loneliness. Her sole friends being Giles and her workmate, Zelda (Octavia Spencer). Her life changes dramatically when a sadistic contractor, Strickland (Michael Shannon) arrives with a strange creature captured in South America. It is 1962, at the height of the Cold War. The creature has dual breathing organs that scientists want to study to gain an edge in the space race. In fact, a Russian agent (Michael Stuhlbarg) is posing as a scientist to gain access to the beast. Strickland finds the beast to be an abomination. His ambition is to destroy the creature, dissect it and learn its secrets. Elisa has learned to communicate with the creature and learns of plans to destroy it. She plans to save the creature, but can not do it alone. Her passion drives those closest to her to help, but at what cost?

Every year, around this time, I go to the movies and see a film that was created for the Oscars. Last year it was La La Land. This year, it is The Shape of Water. This film was written and produced to win Oscars. I just want to get that out up front. At that point, the similarities to La La Land (and many others) ends. The Shape of Water deserves to win Oscars. The story combines fantasy, horror and romance into an unlikely love story that has a dark but whimsical feel. It is a study in contrasts. Usually, a film like this flops because it doesn't know what it wants to be. But Del Toro's vision is laser focused, creating a story that feels like a love letter to Hollywood. It is a kiss to the films that preceded it. Hollywood loves a film that pays homage to the past. And this film does that in spades. But it is an excellent film.

Del Toro starts with a story that he wrote (the screenplay was adapted with the assistance of Vanessa Taylor) and brings it to life with a cast not unfamiliar with the Oscars. The story oozes originality, even with its roots cast firmly in the past. The narrative arc has everything you expect from a good story. Even pacing, tension, excitement, character development, great dialogue and originality. There is not much missing from this film. The cast includes Oscar winner Octavius Spencer along with nominees Michael Shannon (one of my favorite actors), Sally Hawkins and Richard Spencer. The performances helped bring this story to life. Combined with seamless special effects and a sterile Cold War backdrop, the film transports viewers back in time. The illusion felt complete. And that is why I go to the movies.

The Shape of Water has a two hour and three minute run time. But it didn't feel a full two hours long. Del Toro squeezes the most out of those two hours, delivering a steadily paced story that ebbs and flows nicely. He creates just enough depth in his characters to make them feel complete. The characters have idiosyncrasies that make them step off the screen. The film received an R rating from the MPAA. The film has several scenes of nudity (full nudity), talk of sexual encounters, violence and language. This film is definitely not for younger viewers.

The critical reviews for The Shape of Water are all over the place. Some critics feel it missed the mark. Others are gaga about the film. I am normally reticent when a film is produced with the Oscars in mind. I tend to be more critical of them. Not this time. The Shape of Water delivers. It could have been a lot of things. The combination of inspirations and oddly matched styles had the potential for disaster. But this film was thoughtful. It was dark but gentle. The balance between the elements was evident. Rarely does a film like this come along. And deliver. This may be the best film of 2017. I believe we will see this film nominated for a ton of Oscars for everyone involved in its success. And they will, in this case, be well deserved. 9/10.
