The Tomb Raider Movie Trailer Has Arrived, But Is It Any Good?

Review by @readingdanvers · 3203d · of Tomb Raider

Movies based on computer games are always hard to make, but they really tried with this one.

So first it’s time for you to get to know the cast:

Alicia Vikander is part of the new wave of Oscar winner actresses who immediately gets picked for big blockbuster. In 2015, she won an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in the The Danish Girl and in 2016 it was announced she will be taking on the role of Lara Croft. She’s a 180 from Angelina Jolie, but the character in the games have went through a makeover herself. She got the looks and the talent, but it takes more than a leading actress to create a good movie.

Daniel Wu has been brought as the male co-lead and possible love interest. He’s famous from what I understand Chaina, meaning, this movie has guaranteed financial success there. Also, it’s rare to see none-white co-leads, if he actually is one. If he’s the Chris Pine of this movie, it’s a big deal.

Walton Goggins is the villain of the movie, and I like villain act.

Dominic West will play Lord Richard Croft

The director:

The director, Roar Uthaug, comes from Norway. He’s mostly unexperienced in the blockbuster genre. It will be interesting to watch his attempt to make it to the big league. His biggest movie to date is The Wave, tried to make in to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, but didn’t make it in. I have to say, just from the poster of the movie, It doesn’t look low budget, so maybe he has some action experience.

The screenwriter:

The movie is written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, a rising star in Hollywood. Also, currently working on the drafts for Captain Marvel, so Marvel fans might be interested in this movie just for this reason. She's also going to write the script for Sherlock Holmes 3, Gotham City Sirens and Dungeons & Dragons, a busy woman, and one to keep an eye on.

Movies based on computer games are usually really really bad, but Lara Croft will always have a soft spot in my heart. I even liked the terrible Angelina Jolie movies. Not all female action hero movies can, or should be Wonder Woman.

The trailer itself has arrived after a small delay and shows us an origin story for Lara Croft. She discovers a hint that could lead her to find her missing father. This trailer also looks like a videogame, I mean that it looks like a walkthrough of a videogame, for better and for worse. When I saw her buying two guns at the end of the trailer, I was super excited. I think it has the potential to be an enjoyable bad or mediocre action movie.

This movie comes out two weeks after Red Sparrow and will undoubtedly crush it.

Release date: 16 March 2018

FYI. The wave was forgettable. I agree, video games are hard to translate into film. They are rarely done well. This one will have to hit 7 on IMDB before I will see it at the theater. If it gets good reviews, I'll check it out.

I have mixed feelings after seeing the trailer. I was hoping to get a little excited but I'm moreso indifferent.
