Although I am not usually a person who is shocked very easily, Big Mouth is a series that from the beginning has awakened in me a great number of feelings that I did not expect, starting from genuine interest and respect, to the inevitable indignation with the way in which he often decides to execute his central themes.
For those who do not know it in depth, Big Mouth is an animated Netflix series that has been running for 5 seasons to date, mainly focused on dealing with issues such as puberty, sexuality and masturbation from an unfiltered perspective, using a group of children who are in full sexual development as protagonists. Its premise is more than enough to turn off anyone who considers themselves conservative from a social point of view, but in the midst of its vulgar comedy style, Big Mouth has hidden a couple of brilliant observations since its inception that take advantage of its very surreal nature to deliver his strong messages effectively.
In a few words, it is an experiment that ended up working surprisingly well, where the adventures of Nick and Andrew, two young men who are in the midst of their sexual awakening, must deal with certain problems that we as adults have already made part of our lives or simply overcome in its entirety.
Sexual desire is represented through an imaginary monster that guides them (Sometimes good and sometimes bad) while similar creatures arise regarding our protagonists' fears, their moments of anger, their constant insecurities, dictating their actions and leading them where they feel they want to be.
And what is the problem? At its most positive Big Mouth is a brilliant alteration of the typical classic Sunday cartoon that evokes nostalgia in its viewers, reliving the experiences of the past that forged our character in exaggerated and fanciful ways... But at its most negative sometimes is unnecessarily grotesque, and enjoys to disturbs his audience without giving us anything of real value in return.
This has been a problem that over the years has aggravated and in its fifth season they seem to be more marked than ever, these boys have been built organically through each episode, but sometimes their behavior goes wrong without following a clear logic, rather to serve the narrative of the moment and to give us an impactful morbid moment.
I do not want to be misunderstood, despite my indignation I feel that it is a very important series, and beyond its vulgarity there are many important ideas that are being transmitted, the sexual nature of this group of preteens is recognized, leaving behind any form of prejudice.
It operates under a healthy logic, which can have quite an impact, of course, but it fits perfectly with the changes that our world is undergoing.
Is it volatile? yes, of course, and once in a while things go too far... But I would never wish for it to fail just because I'm not ready to hear a good portion of its message, or rather, because I don't like the way it is. explicit in which they are presented to us.
Aunque no suelo ser una persona que se impacta con extrema facilidad, Big Mouth es una serie que desde el principio ha despertado en mi una gran cantidad de sentimientos que no esperaba, partiendo desde el genuino interés y respeto, hasta la inevitable indignación con la forma en la que muchas veces decide ejecutar sus temas centrales.
Para aquellos que no la conozcan a profundidad, Big Mouth es una serie animada de Netflix que lleva 5 temporadas hasta el día de hoy, enfocada principalmente en tratar temas como la pubertad, la sexualidad y la masturbación desde una óptica sin filtros, usando a un grupo de niños que están en pleno desarrollo sexual como protagonistas. Su premisa es más que suficiente para alejar a cualquier persona que se considere conservadora desde un punto de vista social, pero en medio de su estilo de comedia tan vulgar Big Mouth ha escondido desde sus inicios un par de observaciones brillantes que aprovechan su naturaleza tan surrealista para entregar sus tajantes mensajes con efectividad.
En pocas palabras, es un experimento que terminó funcionando sorprendentemente bien, en dónde la aventuras de Nick y Andrew, dos jóvenes que se encuentran en medio de su despertar sexual, deben lidiar con ciertos de problemas que nosotros como adultos, ya hicimos parte de nuestra vida diaria o simplemente superamos en su totalidad.
El deseo sexual se representa a través de un monstruo imaginario que nos guía (A veces bien y a veces mal) mientras que criaturas similares surgen con respecto a los miedos de nuestros protagonistas, sus momentos de ira, sus constantes inseguridades, dictando sus acciones y llevándonos a dónde sienten que desean estar.
¿Y cuál es el problema? En sus momentos más positivos Big Mouth es una brillante alteración de la caricatura dominguera que evoca la nostalgia en sus espectadores, reviviendo las experiencias del pasado que forjaron nuestro carácter de formas exageradas y fantasiosas... Pero en su momentos más negativos a veces innecesariamente grotesca, que se regodea en perturbar a su audiencia sin brindarnos nada de valor real a cambio.
Este ha sido un problema que el paso de los años ha agravado y en su quinta temporada parecen ser más marcados que nunca, estos chicos se han construido de manera orgánica a través de cada episodio, pero a veces, su comportamiento se tuerce sin seguir una lógica clara, más bien para servir la narrativa del momento.
No quiero que me malinterpreten, a pesar de mi indignación siento que es una serie importantísima, y más allá de su vulgaridad hay muchas ideas importantes que se están transmitiendo, se reconoce la naturaleza sexual de este grupo de preadolescentes dejando atrás cualquier forma de prejuicio.
Opera bajo una lógica saludable, que puede impactar bastante, por supuesto, pero encaja a la perfección con los cambios que está sufriendo nuestro mundo.
¿Es volátil? claro que sí, y de vez en cuando las cosas van muy lejos... Pero nunca me atrevería a desear sj fracaso solo porque no estoy listo para oír una buena porción de su mensaje, o mejor dicho, porque no me gusta la forma tan explícita en la que nos los presentan.
