Bumblebee (2018) review: Painfully effective.

Bumblebee is a movie whose very existence is already offensive, why? Because it shows that all the Transformers that came before make no sense, because they were opaque by a fairly average blockbuster that even in its most mediocre moments manages to overcome them.

Michael Bay is the master of the show, there is no doubt about that, Transformers was a surprising display of special effects and shots that, although they were not very clear, did demonstrate a technical capacity that was on another level. What was the problem then? This show lacks heart, we do not connect with its characters, humans or aliens, the plot is difficult to follow, and the most worrying thing: even if it was easy to do, we are not interested.

Bumblebee seems to repeat the formula, with the difference that this time he hits the brakes and lets us absorb everything with much more delicacy, ironically, although it is not loaded with so much action, the moments that do require it end up being much more shocking.

It has a much more intimate nature, and although it has a large-scale alien and military conflict, the important thing is in its protagonist girl "Charlie", and the relationship she forges with Bee.

Of course, Bumblebee is generic and predictable, he never takes narrative or visual risks, he is attractive if the 80s aesthetic suits him, but he does not seek to reinvent the wheel in terms of plot.

This predictability does not bother, on the contrary, it covers the film with an indescribable comfort, a familiarity that makes every moment pleasant.

On the negative side, it seems that Bay's traces (although few and fuzzy in terms of internal canon) are part of the heaviest part of the film, the decepticons turn out to have a boring presence, which does not benefit at all by coming together. with dumb military men.

Bumblebee is what to expect and a bit more, it definitely feels more comfortable in your skin than any Bay tape, and it has a much more pleasant cast than anything that came before, I also highlight how the autobots and decepticons embrace a design more faithful to the animated series and original toys, for those who grew up with them, it will undoubtedly be a plus.

Also do not think that the change in focus has led you to neglect the special effects, for the most part, they are impressive.

The soundtrack is also quite pleasant, and a long but measured film length end up closing the deal on a solid and fun product, we do not call it a masterpiece and neither do we seek to be one.

Michael Bay is one of the worst movie directors ever lived, and this Bumblebee film, which is not by him, is a major improvement. Even though it is a typical Hollywood blockbuster without much merit, perhaps still better than the entire Bay franchise together. !PIZZA
