There is a huge difference between what it means to be a perfect movie, and what it means to be a perfect SEQUEL, although both adjectives can coexist (and in fact, on a couple of very specific occasions), it is important to understand the difference between the two things when it comes to objective quality and what it stands for in terms of philosophy.
As much as we want to argue the contrary, art can never exist in a hermetic way and this is something that can considerably alter our perception of basically any movie, what is the point of expecting from Twilight New Moon a dense exploration of the vampire myth when its predecessor was nothing more than a teen romance with fantasy elements?
I mention all this because I feel that Creed III is an excellent example of a film that, although it could be considered mediocre if we review it in isolation, is greatly enhanced by the legacy left by the two previous films, as well as obviously the iconic films. from Rocky.
What can we say about it that hasn't already been said? Ryan Coogler managed to create a fascinating spin off in 2015, which refocused the franchise routes and passed the torch from the Italian stallion to the hands of a young Adonis Creed.
The omnipresence of a Rocky Balboa who was affected by age, willing to teach his best friend's son to box properly, made for a passionate story, far from the exaggerations that characterized the sequels of the original series (with the exception of Rocky V and Balboa), presented everything from an intimate and dramatic perspective, although the aesthetic obviously received a facelift thanks to the inclusion of elements of African-American culture, as well as the acceptance of the obvious passage of time.
There were doubts at the time, but two fairly solid blockbusters showed us that Coogler had made the right decisions, and not only that, but that a level of tonal and narrative consistency was reached that, at least to date, we had not had the opportunity to see in this film. franchise, all these virtues are sustained in Creed III, despite the fact that this time the one behind the scenes is Michael B. Jordan himself, venturing into the direction of a work of this caliber for the first time.
The result? Yet another average movie (and I say that as a compliment), Creed III is an organic extension of everything we've seen before, embracing the legacy of the franchise and including new elements that work naturally with those of a lifetime, a repetition of formula that any fan will appreciate.
On this occasion Adonis seems less focused on maintaining his world champion title, instead he decides to retire and start taking over a gym, taking advantage of the knowledge acquired (and his resources) to discover new talent and have more free time to attend to his wife and daughter.
We know that in the Rocky cinematic universe "retirements" are fleeting, so at no time do we have any doubts about whether the son of the iconic Apollo will return to the ring or not, instead we are concerned about the reason why he will decide to do so.
Jonathan Majors (who is at the height of his fame thanks to the recently introduced character of Kang within the MCU) represents the antagonist of this iteration, a man closely connected to Adonis's past who spent half a life in prison and is out to make up for time. lost.
Although Creed III goes through all the narrative Beats that we could expect and never stops being predictable, it is undeniable that it is a beautiful show where violence is often a point of connection between two human beings: one trying to leave behind his horrible past and another trying to use it as a drive to get to the top at any cost.
Jordan's direction manages to be refreshing enough to give us one of the most attractive films of the year (at least within the mainstream market) and has one of the most visually refreshing climaxes in the entire saga.
Creed III is not a perfect movie but the way in which it understands the strengths and weaknesses of all its predecessors makes it a perfect SEQUEL.

Por más que queramos abogar por lo contrario el arte nunca puede existir de forma hermética y esto es algo que puede alterar considerablemente nuestra percepción de básicamente cualquier película, ¿Qué sentido tiene que esperemos de Twilight New Moon una densa exploración al mito del vampiro cuando su predecesora no era más que un romance adolescente con elementos fantasiosos?
Menciono todo esto porque siento que Creed III es un ejemplo excelente de una película que si bien podría tacharse de mediocre si la revisamos de forma aislada, se ve ampliamente repotenciado por el legado que dejaron las dos cintas previas, así como obviamente, las icónicas películas de Rocky.
¿Que podemos decir al respecto que no se haya dicho ya? Ryan Coogler logró crear en 2015 un spin off fascinante, que reenfocaba las rutas de la franquicia y pasaba la antorcha del semental italiano a las manos de un joven Adonis Creed.
La omnipresencia de un Rocky Balboa que se encontraba afectado por la edad dispuesto a enseñar al hijo de su mejor amigo a boxear apropiadamente daban para una historia apasionada, que lejos de las exageraciones que caracterizaron a las secuelas de la serie original (Con excepción de Rocky V y Balboa), presentaban todo desde una óptica íntima y dramática, aunque obviamente la estética recibiera un lavado de cara gracias a la inclusión de elementos de la cultura afroamericana, así como la aceptación al obvio paso del tiempo.
Dudas habían en su momento pero dos blockbusters bastante sólidos nos demostraron que Coogler había tomado las decisiones correctas, y no solo eso, sino que se alcanzó un nivel de consistencia tonal y narrativa que al menos hasta la fecha no habíamos tenido la oportunidad de ver esta franquicia, todas estas virtudes se sostienen en Creed III, a pesar de que en esta ocasión el que está detrás de camaras es el mismísimo Michael B. Jordan, incursionando por primera vez en la dirección de una obra de este calibre.
¿El resultado? Otra película más del montón (Y lo digo como cumplido), Creed III es una prolongación orgánica de todo lo que hemos visto antes, abrazando el legado de la franquicia e incluyendo nuevos elementos que operan naturalmente con aquellos de toda la vida, una repetición de fórmula que cualquier fanático apreciará.
En esta ocasión Adonis pareciera menos enfocado en mantener su título de campeón mundial, en cambio decide retirarse y empezar a hacerse cargo de un gimnasio, aprovechando los conocimientos adquiridos (y sus recursos) para descubrir talento nuevo y poder tener más tiempo libre para atender a su esposa y su hija.
Sabemos que en el universo cinematográfico de Rocky los "retiros" son algo fugaz, así que en ningún momento tenemos dudas sobre si el hijo del icónico Apolo volverá al ring o no, en cambio estamos preocupados por la razón por la cuál decidirá hacerlo.
Jonathan Majors (Quien está en la cúspide de su fama gracias al recientemente introducido personaje de Kang dentro del MCU) representa el antagonista de esta iteración, un hombre estrechamente conectado al pasado de Adonis que pasó media vida en prisión y está dispuesto a recuperar el tiempo perdido.
Aunque Creed III pasa por todos los Beats narrativos que podríamos esperar y nunca deja de ser predecible, es innegable que se trata de un hermoso espectáculo en dónde la violencia muchas veces es un punto de conexión entre dos seres humanos: uno tratando de dejar atrás su horrible pasado y otro tratando de usarlo como impulso para llegar a la cima cueste lo que cueste.
La dirección de Jordan logra ser lo suficientemente refrescante como para entregarnos una de las películas más atractivas del año (Al menos dentro del mercado mainstream) y cuenta con uno de los climax más refrescantes visualmente dentro de toda la saga.
Creed III no es una película perfecta pero la forma en la que comprende las virtudes y defectos de todas sus antecesoras la convierte en una SECUELA perfecta.
