[ENG/ESP] The Simpsons didn't predict anything.

The Simpsons are one of the most recognizable animated series in the world, the impact of this family could be equated with giants like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny or more recently SpongeBob.

Of course, the debate about its quality always becomes heated, considering its long duration and the evident desire to continue expanding it, it is no secret that the new seasons have lost part of the spark that made the first ones one of the most brilliant sitcoms of the world. However, The Simpsons always manage to stay in the center of the conversation, a giant of pop culture that does not lose steam.

One of the drivers of this conversation has always been the belief that the Simpsons can predict the future, a belief that is supported by a series of "predictions", events in the canon present or sometimes future of the series that end up happening in real life.

My idea is not to aggressively deny the ability that according to the Internet the Simpsons have to predict things, but to explain why on a personal level (based on facts and a brief analysis) it does not make sense. Still, I find it fun to read people theorizing about it, and I feel that although it is not true it does show us the brilliant ability that a good team of writers has in satirizing the American way of life.

It is not a criticism of those who enjoy reading these things, much less those who write them, it is just my little contribution in the conversation.

For my post I will take 3 predictions (of the most common) and comment on why I think they do not make sense:

It should be taken into account that currently the Simpsons has more than 700 episodes, if we connect this with the fact that one of its functions is to be a satire of American culture, in times as crazy as those we live in, it is not particularly difficult to predict something .

The presidency of Donald Trump

I quite like this one because it perfectly demonstrates the previous point, for those who live outside the United States, American politics might seem like a joke, and the truth is, things are quite crazy there.

In the episode Bart To The Future, where we can observe the future of the Simpson Family: Lisa is declared the first heterosexual female president of the United States and a brief reference is made to the presidency of Donald Trump. This episode curiously dates back to the year 2000, in the 11th season ... long before Trump even had a chance to announce that he was running for president.

So, what happened here? Without detracting from the ability of the Simpsons to guess something like this, it should be noted that Donald Trump is not an apparition of this last decade, on the contrary, he is a businessman who has been relevant since a long time ago.

An article by Perfil mentions that Trump had more than 30 years involved in politics and although early in his career he denied that he was going to run the spark was always there.

Again, it is not intended to detract from the ability of the Simpsons writers, but it was a joke based on a reality that many feared and unfortunately - for many, I do not generalize - it was fulfilled.

The attack of 9/11

I chose this one because I feel that to deny it they apply totally different rules to the previous one, the "prediction" of the attack on the twin towers in "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson ”manages to be simultaneously one of the most far-fetched and difficult to correct predictions.

In the episode Bart holds in his hands a brochure of a bus trip that shows a number 9 next to a skyline of the city where the Twin Towers can be seen, the towers, of course they seem to draw a number 11.

For me this is due to an unfortunate coincidence, one of them after so many hundreds of chapters is not particularly difficult to find. The Twin Towers were a symbol of New York City, and it does not feel out of place that a skyline designed to represent it has them drawn almost in the middle, the 9 only adds fuel to the fire ... although as I say, this prediction is difficult to attack.

In terms of plot, the brochure is irrelevant and the atack is never adressed.

Ebola

Again, as with the Trump presidency, it is the public's ignorance of the timeline of certain events that allows these predictions to take hold. In 1997, during the chapter "Lisa’s Sax", Marge suggests that Bart read a book to help him sleep, "Curious George and the Ebola virus" with a picture of Jorge sick.

As many know, Ebola broke out in Africa in 2014, causing hundreds of deaths, so did the Simpsons predict the future?

Although the virus gained strength In 2014, the first outbreaks date from 1976, this means that someone with knowledge of the disease could have included the joke without any problem.

The point is that although it is fun to talk about conspiracy theories it is also important to verify the facts, this does not seek to destroy the conversation but to nurture it, also it's important to recognize the brilliant work of the writers of the Simpsons. Uno de los propulsores de esta conversación siempre ha sido la creencia de que los Simpsons pueden predecir el futuro, creencia que se sustenta en una serie de “predicciones”, eventos en el canon presente o a veces futuro de la serie que terminan ocurriendo en la vida real.

Mi idea no es desmentir con agresividad la capacidad que según internet tienen los simpsons para predecir cosas, sino explicar por qué a un nivel personal (sustentándome en hechos y un breve análisis) no tiene sentido. Aún así, me parece divertido leer a la gente teorizando sobre ello, y siento que aunque no es verdad si nos demuestra la brillante capacidad que tiene un buen equipo de escritores satirizando el estilo de vida americano.

No se trata de una crítica a quienes disfrutan leyendo estas cosas, mucho menos a quienes las escriben, es solo mi granito de arena en la conversación.

Para mi post tomaré 3 predicciones (de las más comunes) y comentaré el por qué pienso que no tienen sentido:

Debe tomarse en cuenta que actualmente los simpsons cuenta con más de 700 episodios, si conectamos esto con el hecho de que una de sus funciones es ser una sátira a la cultura estadounidense, en tiempos tan alocados como los que vivimos no es particularmente difícil predecir algo.

La presidencia de Donald Trump

Esta me gusta bastante porque demuestra a la perfección el punto anterior, para aquellos que viven afuera de Estados Unidos la política norteamericana podría parecer un chiste, y la verdad, las cosas son bastante descabelladas allá. Imagen

En el episodio Bart To The Future, en donde podemos observar el futuro de la Familia Simpson: Lisa es declarada como la primera mujer presidente heterosexual de Estados Unidos y se hace una breve referencia a la presidencia de Donald Trump. Este episodio curiosamente data del año 2000, en la 11ava temporada... mucho antes de que si quiera Trump tuviese la oportunidad de anunciar que se postulaba para el puesto de presidente.

Entonces, ¿Que pasó aquí? Sin restar mérito a la capacidad de lo Simpsons para adivinar algo así hay que destacar que Donald Trump no es ningún aparecido de esta última década, todo lo contrario, es un empresario que lleva bastantes años a sus espaldas teniendo relevancia pública.

Un artículo de Perfil menciona que Trump tenía más de 30 años involucrado en la política y aunque temprano en su carrera negó que fuese a postularse pues la chispa siempre estuvo ahí.

De nuevo, no se busca quitarle mérito a la capacidad de los escritores de los Simpsons, pero se trató de un chiste sustentado en una realidad que muchos temían y lamentablemente -Para muchos, no generalizo- se cumplió.

El atentado del 9/11

Escogí este porque siento que para desmentirlo aplican normas totalmente distintas al anterior, la “predicción” del atentado de las torres gemelas en “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson” logra ser simultáneamente uno de los más rebuscados y difíciles de corregir.

En el episodio Bart tiene en sus manos en folleto de un viaje en autobús que muestra un número 9 junto a un skyline de la ciudad en donde pueden observarse las Torres gemelas, las torres, por supuesto parecen dibujar un número 11.

Para mi esto se debe a una desafortunada coincidencia, una de ellas luego de tantos cientos de capítulos no logra especialmente difícil encontrar. Las Torres Gemelas eran un símbolo de la ciudad de Nueva York, y no se siente fuera de lugar que un skyline diseñado para representarla las tenga dibujadas casi en el medio, el 9 solo echa más leña al fuego... aunque como digo, esta predicción es difícil de atacar.

En términos de trama el folleto es irrelevante y nunca se hace ningún tipo de reverencia al posterior evento, por ende, es buscarle la quinta pata al gato.

Ébola

De nuevo, al igual que con la presidencia de Trump, que el público ignore la cronología de ciertos eventos es lo que permite que estas predicciones tomen fuerza. En 1997, durante el capítulo “Lisa’s Sax”, Marge le sugiere a Bart leer un libro para que le ayude a dormir, “Jorge el Curioso y el virus del Ebola” con una imagen de Jorge enfermo.

Como muchos saben, el Ébola estalló en Africa en el año 2014, causando cientos de muertes, entonces, ¿Los Simpsons predijeron el futuro?

Aunque el virus tomó fuerza en el 2014, los primeros brotes datan del año 1976, esto quiere decir que alguien con conocimiento de la enfermedad pudo haber incluido el chiste sin ningún problema.

El punto es que aunque es divertido hablar de teorías conspirativas también es importante verificar los hechos, esto no busca destruir la conversación sino nutrirla, reconociendo también el brillante trabajo de los escritores de los Simpsons. Espero hayan disfrutado este post, así como yo disfruté investigar para redactarlo.
