Halloween Ends (2022) review: is it a proper send off?

Halloween is probably one of the most interesting horror movie franchises out there in our current landscape, after pretty much founding the entire modern slasher genre in the mid-70s and spawning a string of sequels of inconsistent quality, its unexpected revival in 2018 ended. being a success, not only bringing back to the cinema the enigmatic and grotesque story of Michael Myers, but also giving the green light to a new trilogy that would explore his mythology in a very interesting way.

In general I have appreciated all these films, I regretted a bit that the original sequel (Released in 1981) will be outside the canon but I also understood that the narrative and thematic presentation of this new trilogy would be very different. A clean slate where the first confrontation between Laurie Strode and the Boogeyman would serve to carry out an apparently deep study on the traumas caused and evil as a materialized concept.

As if that were not enough, we had the passage of time as a resource, renouncing the Hollywood mania of totally restarting stories (although Halloween had already had such a project at the hands of Rob Zombie), and much more dedicated to paying tribute to its humble but innovative beginnings.

From the beginning the criticism was polarized, Halloween was a classic that had already been squeezed previously with very mixed results, although as I said before its direct sequel had been well received, the same could not be said of those that came later, from a spin off that attended to the nature of John Carpenter's original idea, even a couple of works that seemed like a joke in bad taste replicating who we originally would have considered the true imitators.

Living in the age of nostalgia it was worth the risk, especially if we could bring back the excellent Jamie Lee Curtis, in other words: The original scream queen.

This is how Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022) were born.

I would be lying if I told you that the final result was perfect, although Halloween and Kills were excellent slasher films, it was quite evident that everyone involved in the project did not have a very defined course of action, despite the relatively realistic nature of the original film, we must understand that there was always an ambiguous supernatural aura surrounding the myth of Myers, where the simplicity of his own story ended up being used by viewers to build on it any kind of abstract philosophy, although in theory this is interesting, when returning history the multiplicity of approaches resulted in a set of quite incoherent ideas that were connected in a forced way.

In general I was very satisfied with them, but I was a bit frustrated by the fact that the story was taking longer than necessary, I did not want what had emerged as a fresh and passionate revival to end up repeating the same mistakes of the 80s and 90s.

At least for now it seems that he was wrong, since Halloween Ends has finally put an end to this long-running fight.

Obviously, it is a film that carries with it several of the mistakes made by its two predecessors, but it is also important to recognize that it has been able to purge several of the things that do not work in them, while introducing many new ideas that work organically within the whole film. Serie. Much smaller in scale than Kills, Halloween Ends uses the franchise's typical tropes to its advantage, mixing it with the toxic community feel that characterized the Haddonfield of more recent installments.

As a drawback, perhaps most unfortunate is the quality of several of the more dramatic dialogues, which are functional on the surface but too crude when carefully evaluated. One of the main roles (The Male) has a fascinating story but his performance never seems to measure up, and many plot points can obstruct the importance of Myers.

Despite all this, Halloween Ends is great, the gore sequences are creative and painful, the music is excellent and its entire aesthetic identity knows how to mix classic elements with the most modern ones.

En general he apreciado todos estos filmes, lamenté un poco que la secuela original (Estrenada en 1981) quedará fuera del canon pero también entendía que las presentación narrativas y temática de esta nueva trilogía sería muy diferente. Un borrón y cuenta nueva en dónde el primer enfrentamiento entre Laurie Strode y el Boogeyman serviría para realizar un estudio aparentemente profundo sobre los traumas causados y la maldad como concepto materializado.

Por si fuera poco, teníamos el paso de tiempo como recurso, renunciando a la manía hollywoodense de reiniciar totalmente las historias (Aunque Halloween ya había tenido un proyecto así de la mano de Rob Zombie), y mucho más dedicada a rendir homenaje a sus humildes pero innovadores inicios.

Desde el principio la crítica estaba polarizada, Halloween era un clásico que ya había Sido exprimido anteriormente con resultados muy mixtos, aunque como dije antes su secuela directa había Sido bien recibida, lo mismo no podríamos decir de aquellas que vinieron después, desde un spin off que atendía a la naturaleza de la idea original de John carpenter, hasta un par de obras que parecían un chiste de mal gusto replicando a quien originalmente hubiésemos considerado los verdaderos imitadores.

Viviendo en la era de la nostalgia valía la pena arriesgarse, especialmente si podíamos traer de vuelta a la excelente Jamie Lee Curtis, en otras palabras: La scream queen original.

Así nacen Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) y Halloween Ends (2022).

Mentiría si les digo que el resultado final fue perfecto, aunque Halloween y Kills eran excelentes films slasher, era bastante evidente que todos los implicados en el proyecto no tenían un curso de acción muy definido, a pesar de la relativamente realista del film original, debemos entender que siempre había un aura sobrenatural ambiguo que rodeaba al mito de Myers, en dónde la simpleza de su propia historia terminaba siendo usada por los espectadores para construir sobre ella cualquier tipo de filosofía abstracta, aunque en teoría esto es interesante, al momento de retomar la historia la multiplicidad de enfoques resultaba en un conjunto de ideas bastante incoherentes que se conectaban de manera forzada.

En general me sentía muy satisfecho con ellas, pero veía con un poco de frustración el hecho de que la historia se estuviese alargando más de la cuenta, no quería que aquello que había surgido como un revival fresco y apasionado terminara repitiendo los mismos errores de los 80s y 90s.

Al menos de momento pareciera que estaba equivocado, puesto que Halloween Ends finalmente le ha puesto fin a esta lucha tan prolongada.

Obviamente, es una película que arrastra varios de los errores cometidos por sus dos predecesoras, pero también es importante reconocer que ha sabido depurar varias de las cosas que no funcionan en ellas, introduciendo al mismo tiempo muchas ideas nuevas que funcionan orgánicamente dentro de toda la serie. Con una escala mucho más pequeña que Kills, Halloween Ends utiliza los típicos tropos de la franquicia a su favor, mezclandola con la sensación de comunidad tóxica que caracterizaba al Haddonfield de las entregas más recientes.

Cómo punto en contra, quizá lo más lamentable sea la calidad de varios de los diálogos más dramáticos, los cuales son funcionales en la superficie pero demasiados toscos cuando se evaluan con cuidado. Uno de los roles protagonistas (El masculino) tiene historia fascinante pero su performance nunca parece dar la talla, y muchos plot points pueden llegar a obstruir la importancia que tiene Myers.

A pesar de todo esto Halloween Ends es estupendo, las secuencias de gore son creativas y dolorosas, la música es excelente y toda su identidad estética sabe mezclar los elementos clásicos con aquello más moderno.
