Although it is quite evident that between Rocky I and its sequel there is a considerable difference in terms of quality (which does not mean that we cannot like one more than the other, it is a matter of personal preferences after all), visiting the third and fourth episode of this saga feels even more disconnected from the original adventure of the Italian stallion.
The previous dichotomy that we had between the dramatic elements and the more traditional action of the 70s, ends up being completely left behind to make way for two films that quite accurately represent all the characteristic features of the eighties blockbuster, sacrificing its substance to a large extent but delivering in return a lot of entertainment of irregular quality.
Something that we cannot deny since its inception is that Rocky has always known how to evolve naturally between film and film, II integrated the unexpected success of the first part into its own plot in a metanarrative way, dealing with the consequences of a sudden ascent to the fame and to a greater or lesser extent here we have a solid continuation of this idea, although it falters a little more in its execution.
Rocky III is a gimmicky product, which has many things to show but little to say, full of iconic sequences and endearing characters (As expected), where perhaps the most important thing is its final minutes that solidify the previously implied friendship between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed, as well as the interesting inclusion of an antagonistic figure that borders on the cartoonish but gives flavor to a story that needs it.
Being totally honest, contrary to what most people think, I have always preferred the fourth installment, even if it is much more dissociated from those characteristics that made Rocky such a great series of films in the first place.
The reason? It is difficult to try to explain it, it is probably due to the inclusion of a much more endearing and cold antagonist, with a couple of moments that, analyzing it, could well deserve our empathy (An idea that the Creed Sequel would develop a couple of decades later) as well as the corny but effective anti-war message that with zero subtlety ends up covering a good portion of the footage.
It's funny, I consider it pertinent to evaluate Rocky III and Rocky IV at the same time, there are many common elements and in terms of rhythm they are very different, however, there are strategic differences that make both films very different experiences.

Aunque es bastante evidente que entre Rocky I y su secuela existe una diferencia considerable en términos de calidad (Que no quiere decir que no pueda gustarnos una más que la otra, es una cuestión de preferencias personales al fin y al cabo), visitar el tercer y cuarto episodio de esta saga se siente aún más desconectado de la aventura original del semental italiano.
La previa dicotomía que teníamos entre los elementos dramáticos y la acción más tradicional de los 70, termina quedando totalmente atrás para darle paso a dos filmes que representan de forma bastante acertada todos los rasgos característicos del blockbuster ochentero, sacrificando en buena medida su sustancia pero entregando a cambio mucho entretenimiento de calidad irregular.
Algo que no podemos negar desde sus inicios es que Rocky siempre ha sabido evolucionar de forma natural entre película y pelicula, II integraba de forma metanarrativa el exito inesperado de la primera parte a su propia trama, lidiando con las consecuencias de un ascenso repentino a la fama y en mayor o menor medida aquí tenemos una continuación sólida a esta idea, aunque tambalee un poco más en su ejecución.
Rocky III es un producto efectista, que tiene muchas cosas por mostrar pero poco que decir, plagada de secuencias icónicas y personajes entrañables (Como es de esperar), en dónde quizá lo más importante sean sus minutos finales que solidifican la ya previamente implicada amistad entre Rocky Balboa y Apollo Creed, así como la inclusión interesante de una figura antagónica que raya en lo caricaturesco pero la brinda sabor a una historia que lo necesita.
Siendo totalmente honesto, contrario a lo que piensa la mayoría del público, siempre he preferido la cuarta entrega, aunque se encuentre mucho más disociada de aquellas notas características que hicieron de Rocky una serie de películas tan grandes en primer lugar.
¿La razon? Es difícil tratar de explicarlo, probablemente se deba a la inclusión de un antagonista mucho más entrañable y frio, con un par de momentos que analizandolo bien podrían merecer nuestra empatía (Una idea que desarrollaría la Secuela de Creed un par de décadas después) así como el cursi pero efectivo mensaje antiguerra que con cero sutileza termina cubriendo una buena porción del metraje.
Es gracioso, considero pertinente evaluar Rocky III y Rocky IV al mismo riempo, hay muchos elementos comunes y en términos de ritmo son muy dimilares, no obstante, existen diferencias estratégicas que convierten ambos filmes en experiencias muy diferentes.
