Since its exclusive premiere on Disney Plus, I was totally determined to ignore the existence of the new She-Hulk series, I understood the concept and valued its efforts to present something different to the MCU, but considering the precedents of recent years, I also understood that the final resul could not be more than mediocre at best, it did not contribute to my perception of the project that the trailers and most of the promotional content had a strange and inconsistent style, something that mixed with a premise and character that's quite difficult to adapt It was an obvious recipe for disaster.
Finally, in the midst of the fomo and wanting to have a more solid basis to criticize negatively, I decided to give its first episode a chance, the question is: Was I right?
She-Hulk is a series that both its defenders and enemies can describe with the same word: Weird. It has an identity crisis that can confuse those who are looking for something with a relatively serious tonality like Falcon and the Winter Soldier or Moon Knight, but that we could not classify as experimental in the style of Wandavision. However, within this lack of focus I must admit that the end result is a fairly light series that although it takes this area of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a strange point, it could never be classified as boring.
Perhaps the biggest victim of this is the character of the Hulk, who since his bitter beginnings in the 2008 film has not only gone through a recasting (remember that Edward Norton was originally in charge of interpreting him and not Mark Ruffalo, something that bothers me series acknowledges), but also hasn't had a consistent story arc since Age of Ultron. Infinity War and Endgame gave him a rather secondary role, and many times his purpose was too comedic and existed despite his more tragic origins, of course, defining whether this was positive or negative depended on the tastes of each fan.
In this case, they try to balance both extremes of the character, but far from making us feel empathy, it ends up feeling like a joke in bad taste, an excuse to form a new female character that could work very well within this cinematographic universe, but at the same time that still has a long way to go.
She-Hulk is bad? Definitely not, the cgi leaves a bit to be desired and most of the scenes are directed horribly, but at the same time I feel it's important to give it a try without being too predisposed to loathe it.
The moments where the fourth wall is broken are enjoyed and the internal conflict that Jennifer wages is interesting, it is an intrinsically feminist story and giving it a correct angle could end up being very solid.
Desde su estreno exclusivo en Disney Plus estaba totalmente decidido a ignorar la existencia de la nueva serie de She-Hulk, entendia el concepto y valoraba sus afanes por presentar algo diferente al MCU, pero considerando los precedentes de estos últimos años también entendía que el resultado final no podría ser más que mediocre en el mejor de los casos, no contribuía con mi percepción del proyecto que los trailers y la mayoría del contenido promocional contara con un estilo raro e inconsistente, algo que mezclado con una premisa y personaje bastante difícil de adaptar, resultaba una receta obvia para el desastre.
Finalmente, en medio del fomo y con ganas de tener bases más solidas para criticar negativamente, decidí darle una oportunidad a su primer episodio, la pregunta es: ¿Yo tenía razón?
She-Hulk es una serie que tanto sus defensores y enemigos pueden describir con la misma palabra: Rara. Tiene una crisis de identidad que puede desconcertar a aquellos que busquen algo de tonalidad relativamente sería como Falcon and the Winter Soldier o Moon Knight, pero que tampoco podríamos catalogar como experimental al estilo de Wandavision. No obstante, dentro de esta falta de enfoque debo admitir que el resultado final es una serie bastante ligera que aunque lleva este área del universo cinematográfico de Marvel a un punto extraño, nunca podría catalogarse como aburrida.
Quizá la mayor víctima de esto es el personaje de Hulk, que desde sus amargos inicios en el filme de 2008 no solo ha pasado por un recasteo (Recordemos que originalmente Edward Norton era el encargado de interpretarlo y no Mark Ruffalo, algo que me esta misma serie reconoce), sino que tampoco ha tenido un arco narrativo consistente desde Age of Ultron. Infinity War y Endgame le dieron un rol bastante secundario, y muchas veces le su propósito era demasiado comedico y existía en dretimento de sus orígenes más trágicos, por supuesto, definir si esto era positivo o negativo dependía de los gustos de cada fan.
En este caso se tratan de balancear ambos extremos del personaje, pero lejos de hacernos sentir empatía, termina sintiéndose como un chiste de mal gusto, una escusa para formar a un nuevo personaje femenino que podría funcionar muy bien dentro de este universo cinematográfico, pero al que aún le falta mucho camino por recorrer.
¿She-Hulk es mala? Definitivamente no, el cgi deja un poco que desear y la mayoría de las escenas están dirigidas de forma horrible, pero al mismo tiempo siento que es importante darle una oportunidad sin estar demasiado predispuesto a detestarla.
Se disfrutan los momentos en dónde se rompe la cuarta pared y el conflicto interno que libra Jennifer es interesante, es una historia intrinsecamente feminista y dándole un ángulo correcto podría terminar siendo muy solida.
