The Cuphead Show (2022) review: The animated series we all need.

After a fairly light marathon (Considering that its episodes are no longer than 12 minutes) I managed to finish the first season of The Cuphead Show.

The expectations were not exactly low, how many will know the idea The Cuphead Show derives from the acclaimed Cuphead game, released in September 2017 and characterized by a unique visual style that was inspired by the classic animations produced by studios such as Walt Disney in the first half of the 20th century.

From this point of view Cuphead as a franchise represents the perfect opportunity to create an animated series, taking advantage of its fantastic universe, its brilliant music and the multiple and ingenious character designs.

So, The Cuphead Show manages to meet our expectations?

We have been living in a kind of "renaissance" for traditional animation for a couple of years, products like Gravity Falls or Adventure Time showed that the format still had value and today they move impressive amounts of people, there is an audience of all ages willing to see this type of projects.

It is important to understand this context because despite the fact that there are multiple animated entertainment options today, one of Cuphead's greatest successes lies in its ability to feel fresh, not so much for being unique but for trying something much simpler than many others. series ignore: just be beautiful and funny.

Presented in a batch of only 12 chapters (with at least two other seasons that have already been confirmed) the adventures of Cuphead and Mugman are built as short and episodic segments that follow a fairly similar structure to each other and appeal to familiarity to engage. We are constantly bombarded by a beautiful aesthetic, which spends little time explaining to us and has as its only rule the absence of rules.

Musically it is loaded with incredible pieces and sound plays such an essential role in each episode that the few moments of silence hurt, The Cuphead Show mixes Jazz rhythms with modern and classic sounds, simultaneously evoking nostalgia and irreverence, the dubbing is impeccable and in In general, it is a product with a lot of personality.

Defects? Ironically we could say that they are the same virtues, The Cuphead Show just seeks to evolve its plot episode after episode, joining each chapter by a couple of plot points without much urgency to give the series a sense of continuity.

Here everything is a matter of taste, although many times this subtracts the impact of the plot possibilities that the series can have in the long term, it also gives it a feeling of Sunday animated cartoon, free of pretensions and focused on keeping us entertained, something that makes It is missing and makes the difference between so many other projects that are so dense on the plot level.

Personally, I am quite happy with the result, The Cuphead Show is fantastic.

Luego de un maratón bastante ligero (Considerando que sus episodios no son de más de 12 minutos) logré terminar la primera temporada de The Cuphead Show.

Las expectativas no estaban precisamente bajas, cómo muchos sabrán la idea The Cuphead Show deriva del aclamado juego Cuphead, estrenado en septiembre del 2017 y caracterizado por un estilo visual único que se inspiraba en las animaciones clásicas producidas por estudios como Walt Disney en la primera mitad del siglo XX.

Desde este punto de vista Cuphead como franquicia representa la oportunidad para perfecta para crear una serie animada, aprovechando su fantástico universo, su brillante música y los múltiples e ingeniosos diseños de personajes.

Entonces, ¿The Cuphead Show si logra llenar nuestras expectativas?

Vivimos en una suerte de "renacimiento" para la animación traidicional desde hace un par de años, productos como Gravity Falls o Adventure Time demostraron que el formato seguía teniendo valor y en la actualidad mueven cantidades impresionantes de gente, existe un público de todas las edades dispuesto a ver este tipo de proyectos.

Es importante entender este contexto porque a pesar de que existen múltiples opciones de entretenimiento animado en la actualidad, uno de los mayores aciertos de Cuphead radica en su habilidad para sentirse fresca, no tanto por ser única sino por intentar algo mucho más simple que muchas otras series ignoran: limitarse a ser hermosa y divertida.

Presentada en una tanda de solo 12 capitulos (Con al menos otras dos temporadas más que ya fueron confirmadas) las aventuras de Cuphead y Mugman están construidas como segmentos cortos y episodicos que sigan una estructura bastante similar entre si y apelan a la familiaridad para enganchar. Constantemente somos bombardeados por una estética hermosísima, que invierte poco tiempo en darnos explicaciones y tiene como regla única la ausencia de reglas.

Musicalmente está recargada de piezas increíbles y el sonido juega un rol tan esencial en cada episodio que los escasos momentos de silencio duelen, The Cuphead Show mezcla ritmos de Jazz con sonidos modernos y clásicos, evocando nostalgia e irreverencia simultáneamente, el doblaje es impecable y en general es un producto con mucha personalidad.

¿Defectos? Irónicamente podríamos decir que son sus mismas virtudes, The Cuphead Show apenas busca evolucinar su argumento episodio tras episodio, uniendo cada capítulo por un par de plot points sin mucha urgencia por darlenun sentido de continuidad a la serie.

Aquí todo es una cuestion de gustos, aunque muchas veces esto resta el impacto a las posibilidades argumentales que puede tener la serie a largo plazo, también le da una sensación de caricatura animada dominguera, libre de pretensiones y enfocada en mantenernos entretenidos, algo que hace falta y marca la diferencia entre tantos otros proyectos tan densos en el plano argumental.

En lo personal me siento bastante feliz con el resultado, The Cuphead Show es fantástica.
