Velma - First Episode (2023) review: What a mess.

Like many of you, I tried to steel myself to watch the first episode of "Velma", the most recent animated series on HBO Max, characterized by trying to adapt the Scooby Doo franchise to a more adult audience.

In the midst of the tsunami of negative reviews that poured out on the internet before and after its release, I thought it would be interesting to do my best to remain objective, thus issuing an opinion that is not affected by all the complaints that I read.

The central idea, for example, had a lot of potential if we approached it with an open mind: Scooby-Doo is a fairly flexible intellectual property and its mystery and horror elements could work very well in a more mature setting, the central gang is made up of characters with the potential to create dense narratives, and uninhibiting the issue of violence and sexuality a bit could give the final product an extra appeal.

Unfortunately, a more in-depth review of the way in which this idea was handled would allow us to glimpse that we are not only dealing with one more adult animation of the bunch, but also that it is not even capable of keeping us entertained during the scarce 23 minutes that each movie lasts. episode.

Mindy Kaling (the main face of this project, producing the series and starring in the central role) fails to understand the true essence of the mystery gang, creating quite awkward dynamics between all the characters.

Most of the creative liberties taken on Velma (altering various characters' race and sexuality) end up serving no other purpose than to turn this work into a parade of unfunny self-references, unable to comprehend acknowledging the mistakes she's made. it is not enough to eliminate them.

The murder mystery on which the entire season will probably be built is boring and fast-paced at the same time, characterized by a victim that doesn't interest us and an unpredictable set of rules that ends up making it impossible to get hooked on its subsequent resolution.

The jokes are constant and almost never land well, the protagonists are extremely unpleasant and do not maintain internal coherence...

Does this mean that Velma is not worth it?

Well, honestly I find it very difficult for it to come back in terms of quality after such a disastrous start, however, there are a couple of decent elements that could be used well to create a good long-term animated series, I'm not bothered by the design of the characters and storytelling potential of an adult Scooby-Doo story remains high.

Thanks for the attempt. The review wasn't positive, but I wasn't expecting one. I did learn a bit more from this. Again, thanks for trying to remain objective.

I'm a big fan of Scooby Doo's franchise but, this one I guess I don't going to watch it, I prefer the oldest serie as well, but thanks so much for review this one! Greetings!

Well, when I heard the news that something like this was coming out I said to myself "this is something I won't see". I don't know, I don't like them trying to change race/sexuality of characters that have already been established in canon just to make them more progressive. They might as well create a new character to generate more inclusion if that's what they want and it would be great to see the interaction of this new character with the characters that already exist, but lately there hasn't been much creativity from certain producers of these shows....

I wasn't planning to watch it and now with this review I reaffirm that I won't watch it hahaha.

Too bad, I was optimistic about Velma because I thought it would be fantastic. But I will give it try and see for myself. Thank you for sharing!

Initially when I heard about this show, I was not sure if I was going to like it. There are a number of things that have been changed about our beloved Mystery Inc. team that I believed would get to me but I was just willing to give the show the benefit of a doubt. I still think that the creators may be on to something with this show. Sure it gives me that "Rick and Morty vibe" but I want to see how much these characters can change to accommodate a more mature narrative. I have not seen the first episode but you have said that you did not like it. I honestly doubt the episode is that good but I think we should let the story unfold a little bit more. I just hope it's not something that may garner a few fans and just get cancelled like many other shows these days.
