War Dogs (2016) review: Style and substance.

It is very normal that as regular movie consumers we find a bifurcation that (with few exceptions) seems to insist on making us choose between style or substance, as if it were inconceivable that a product could be quite entertaining but artistically complex at the same time.

The truth is that there are many cases that prove otherwise and I feel that this is the most positive point of War Dogs. Directed by Todd Philipps in 2016 (who at that time already had the Hangover trilogy on top and later directed The Joker) we find a product with an impeccable rhythm that knows how to tell an interesting story in the best possible way.

Starring Milles Teller and Jonah Hill (In one of the best moments of his now long career) War Dogs is partially inspired by real life events: we follow Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz, two arms dealers who manage to land a millionaire contract with the US military, which could totally change their lives.

Over the course of the film we see how problems arise for the duo and the ingenious ideas they use to solve them.

With a mix of war drama and black comedy, War Dogs alters and sweetens historical events to expand their impact on the viewer, either by making them more exaggerated or giving them a more cinematic touch. All these creative freedoms are far from inconvenient and are what give this experience a unique flavor.

From its first minutes it is a frantic journey where all the information is delivered to us efficiently, the direction is very well managed and the video clip nature fits the plot.

With an aesthetic that manages to contrast beautiful and colorful settings with a couple of cold and decaying cities, we have a physical aspect that complements the themes of the film very well.

Although it is not an anti-war film, we could not say that it does the opposite ... the war as a background does nothing more than promote the cynicism of the characters and shows how for them it is a simple resource to achieve their goals (Which many times it aligns with our own reality)

Thus, within so much humor and spectacle War Dogs includes a considerable amount of interesting information, along with the other points that I mentioned throughout this post brilliantly, it makes us accomplices of all the acts that these criminals commit.

A great movie that deserves to be seen.

Es muy normal que como consumidores regulares de cine nos encontremos con una bifurcación que (Salvo contadas excepciones) parece empeñarse en hacernos escoger entre el estilo o la sustancia, como si fuese inconcebible que un producto logre ser bastante entretenido pero complejo artísticamente al mismo tiempo.

La verdad existen muchísimos casos que demuestran lo contrario y siento que este es el punto más positivo de War Dogs. Dirigida por Todd Philipps en 2016 (Quien en ese entonces ya tenia la trilogía de Hangover encima y más adelante dirigió The Joker) nos encontramos con un producto de un ritmo impecable que sabe contar una historia interesante de la mejor manera posible.

Protagonizada por Milles Teller y Jonah Hill (En uno de Los mejores momentos de su ahora larga carrera) War Dogs se inspira parcialmente en eventos de la vida real: seguimos a Efraim Diveroli y David Packouz, dos traficantes de armas que logran aterrizar un contrato millonario con el ejército estadounidense, lo cual podría cambiar sus vidas totalmente.

En el transcurso del filme vemos cómo van surgiendo problemas para el dúo y las ideas ingeniosas que emplean para solventarlos.

Con una mezcla de drama bélico y comedia negra, War Dogs altera y endulza los hechos históricos para ampliar el impacto de los mismos en el espectador, ya sea haciéndolos más exagerados o dándole un toque más cinematográfico. Todas estas libertades creativas distan de suponer un inconveniente y son los que le dan un sabor único a esta experiencia.

Desde sus primeros minutos se trata de un viaje frenético en donde toda la información se entrega a nosotros de forma eficaz, la dirección está muy bien llevada y la naturaleza videoclipera encaja con la trama.

Con una estética que logra contrastar hermosos y coloridos escenarios con un par de ciudades frías y en decadencia, tenemos un aspecto físico que complementa muy bien los temas de la película.

Aunque no se trata de un film anti-bélico, tampoco podríamos decir que hace lo contrario… la guerra como trasfondo no hace más que impulsar el cinismo de los personajes y demuestra el como para ellos es un simple recurso para alcanzar sus metas (Lo cual muchas veces se alinea con nuestra propia realidad)

Así, dentro de tanto humor y espectáculo War Dogs incluye una cantidad considerable de información interesante, junto a los demás puntos que mencioné a lo largo de este post brillantemente nos hace cómplices de todos los actos que cometen estos criminales.

Una genial película que se merece ver.
