We return again to the universe of The Witcher, specifically in the Netflix version and the Battle of Cintra, this time we will analyze the defense of the city and what I would have done to get out of this fight alive.
I'm two chapters away from finishing the series, no doubt in normal conditions I would have watched it in one sitting, but until I finish my treatment regarding my eyesight problem I can't spend much time glued to a monitor. It has been difficult to write because of it, but I feel better and better and I am anxious for my medical rest to end so I can continue bringing content more regularly.
Without more to say this is the third and last chapter of the war analysis of the Battle of Cintra, I hope you enjoy it a lot, travelers and adventurers without more to say we begin.

La defensa de las murallas | The defense of the walls

Well, in the previous post we saw what happened in the open field battle on the outskirts of Cintra, Niflgaard's army and its numerical superiority prevailed and destroyed almost all the battalions of Cintra and were ready to take the city by assault.
Something that caught my attention and made me quite noise was that the city walls were perfectly defensible, in a writing I did some time ago about the battle of Helm's Deep from the movie The Lord of the Rings I explained the structural failures of the fortress and why they were so difficult to defend; in the case of this city does not happen...
The battlements of the walls have the correct shape and height, the gates of the walls have double gate system, perfect to generate bottlenecks and trap enemy units there.

For those who do not know many medieval castles have a double door system, an outer door and an inner door, between the doors there is a hole, in that hole were placed traps such as boiling oil or many archers in order that in case of a siege the enemies are forced to knock down by force the outer door and then to enter the city to break down the inner door and while that happened the defenders could throw boiling oil or riddle the attackers with projectiles.
This double gate system for example is totally absent in some fortresses in Game of Thrones or the Lord of the Rings movies. I criticized this a lot at the time, it seems absurd that the fortress serves perfectly well as a defense and Cintra has not left enough soldiers to defend the walls.
Obviously with no one defending the walls, Nilfgaard's army breaks through them without much effort and sack the city.

¿Qué hubiera hecho yo? | What would I have done?

At this point I have nothing more to say about the battle, the truth is that its recreation was not what I expected, however, it was not a lost battle, Cintra could have won and in this section I will explain how Cintra could have effectively avoided Niflgaard's attack.
Here are two scenarios if I were the commander of this defense; the first scenario would be if I actually counted on the naval reinforcements that were supposed to arrive in the city (which I would know very well in advance if I were the commander).

In this hypothetical case the battle in the open field is viable because we have a number equal or greater than that of our invader. If so I would arrange my troops in an open formation, specifically a crescent formation as in the battle of Cannas (a real life historical battle in which an outnumbered army defeats a much larger one). I would organize the cavalry on both flanks of the formation, this way I would avoid being surrounded by the enemy.

Considering the way Nilfgaard's army attacked, which was totally direct, my first move would be to advance with the horsemen on both flanks and envelop the attacking units with a pincer movement, they have no spearmen so it will be easy to wipe out the infantry; a direct cavalry clash would also have been quite effective.
Then I would advance with my armored infantry supported in the rear line by archers to repel another direct charge and go slowly surrounding my invader and destroying their units, my infantry should not have so many problems against the enemy archers because from what is seen in the series, they have heavy armor and shields.

Now, if I don't count on naval reinforcements then I would stay inside the city walls which are perfectly defensible. Apparently this failure, as well as the failure of the ships if it also comes in the books, something that at the level of battles subtracts many points, but do not take away my desire to want to read them.
Defender la ciudad nignificaba ganar | Defending the city meant winning

I remember when I commented on the failures of the Battle of Winterfell in Game of Thrones, someone (I don't remember who at the moment) told me that going out into the open to fight the dead was not such a bad idea as the dead could surround the castle and hold it under siege indefinitely because they don't get tired, feel hunger, fatigue or pain.
To some extent this is a valid argument, although if we are talking about this battle we are not talking about an army that is planning to conquer the city. If you watched the series you will know that Nilfgaard's army attacked Cintra to kidnap Ciri, so the invaders must forcefully enter the city to achieve their goal and the defenders know this well.
Being necessary for Nilfgaard to take the city by assault then I can stay quietly on the walls and defend them, I do not need too many soldiers for that and I do not think that Nilfgaard's men come with the willingness and patience to besiege the city and wait six months or a year or even more for those inside to die of hunger, they need Princess Ciri alive, they must enter.
I noticed that Nilfgaard also has no siege machinery, there is not a single manual ladder, no battering ram, blunderbuss or catapult, I don't know how in the series they managed it, but this way it would be impossible to take the city, not even pass the gates and if the walls are defended with enough soldiers (which don't necessarily have to be many) the casualties they would have had would have been disastrous.

Basically I have no need to go out to confront my adversary, I would let him come looking for me and get the surprise of his life.

Se pudo haber hecho mejor | Could have been done better

In all honesty this battle left me a little disappointed due to its technical errors, otherwise I liked the chapter, I think the defense of the city could have been done more effectively and could have even repelled the attack.

These errors are common in many battles and wars in the movies, hopefully with time they will be corrected and the new battles that appear in the series will be even more spectacular and better constructed.
I have nothing more to say dear adventurers, I hope you liked this brief writing, and we'll see if we see each other again in another adventure in the universe of The Witcher. Until the next adventure...
