The release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (BPWF) on November 9, 2022, marked the end of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Many fans, including myself, had high hopes for this film to close out the phase on a sweet and meaningful note. Thankfully, BPWF did not disappoint. This film is not just a sequel to Black Panther, but also a deeply emotional tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman. Ryan Coogler directed the film brilliantly, avoiding the fate that befell Taika Waititi after Thor: Love and Thunder.
Visible Passion
One of the most striking aspects of BPWF is the dedication and passion exhibited by the cast and crew. Everyone involved seemed committed to preserving the legacy left by Chadwick Boseman. The emotion felt real in almost every scene and dialogue, especially those involving central characters like Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett). With a duration of 2 hours and 41 minutes, the film maintained a well-paced narrative, allowing viewers to fully absorb each emotional moment without feeling rushed.
Stunning Performance by Queen Ramonda
For me, the MVP of this film is Queen Ramonda, portrayed by Angela Bassett. In this film, Ramonda receives more spotlight and a more vital role compared to the first Black Panther film. Bassett masterfully portrays a tough leader who also embodies the gentle qualities of a mother. Her emotional performance effectively conveys the many facets the film aims to highlight, even surpassing Letitia Wright’s portrayal of Shuri.
Introduction of New Characters: Namor and Riri Williams
Two new characters, Namor and Riri Williams, are also critical points in BPWF. Tenoch Huerta as Namor delivers a strong performance, despite the MCU version of Namor being different from the comic version. Namor is depicted with the authority of a king and the ferocity of a warrior, complete with a compelling backstory. The visualization of Talocan as an underwater civilization is also satisfying, adding potential for interesting story exploration in the future.
Meanwhile, Riri Williams, played by Dominique Thorne, has a smaller role. Nevertheless, her debut as Iron Heart is promising, although there are some parts that feel lacking. Her introduction in this film may feel a bit forced, but it still leaves room for development in her solo series.
Impressive Visuals and Action
Visually, BPWF offers many eye-pleasing scenes. This is reassuring, considering fans’ concerns about visual quality since Phase 4 began. The action sequences in this film are quite impressive, particularly the battles between Okoye and the Talocan warriors, as well as several sequences involving Namor. However, the action sequences involving Shuri feel less impactful, possibly due to Letitia Wright’s difficulty in executing these sequences with precision.
Heartwarming Conclusion
The film’s conclusion is very heartwarming and provides a satisfying closure to Phase 4 of the MCU. This conclusion is significant not only for the main characters but also for offering a glimpse into the future of Wakanda and Talocan. The film succeeds as a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, as a sequel that surpasses its predecessor, and as a fitting end to Phase 4 of the MCU.
