In general, I try to tell myself that reboots and remakes are, for the most part, nothing to be afraid of. They are going to happen because Hollywood is show business and the business of making movies goes through phases of repetition and familiarity sells. People forget that John Carpenter's The Thing, for example, is a remake and is a classic. In fairness, the current run of remakes and reboots have felt like a cynical ploy but that is only because those of us who saw the originals in theatres are seeing them again in this new form and it isn't comfortably gelling with our nostalgia. Make no mistake, whatever you think of their quality, remakes and reboots like the recent Ghostbusters or this version of Point Break are not, retroactively, ruining your childhood.

The original, 1991 film, Point Break was a star-making turn, for Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, despite its relatively average box office take. This new one stars Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bacey in the titular roles of Bodhi and Utah. Utah is with the FBI and he is hunting extreme sports criminal Bodhi as he travels the world committing extreme crimes while doing so in extreme athletic performances. The difference between this Utah and Reeves' is that this one was also into extreme sports. This is where this film attempts to up the ante over the original and compete with the current run of tentpole action flicks and superhero movies.

This movie was an okay film. It suffers from being attached to the Point Break brand. Had it been just another action film about extreme sports criminals, it probably would have done better in theatres because it is a globe trotting, adventure that glories in thrilling photography of extreme athletics. I'm not sure if they were computer enhanced or not but they were neat. I was surprised by that. The actors were okay, no one was memorable but they didn't suck either.

It's harmless fun, it suffers from being called Point Break.
