  1. Point Break (2015 film): It's just as "meh" as you've heard@netflixr808d

I put off watching this one because I don't like the way that Hollywood is tarnishing the career of the late Patrick Swayze by remaking all of his classic and iconic roles. However, this could be one of those films that I believe could be worthy of a remake because our technology is so much better now than it was in 1991 when the original was made.

I was happy about a few things in the film such as the advancement of filming technology and that they used a completely different story, but everything else about the film is woefully bad.

    image.png src

So where do we start? The film begins with a cringeworthy motocross something or other on a mountaintop where Johnny Utah is riding with a friend to capture footage for some extreme sports company that he works for. As is extremely predictable from the start, his friend that is riding with him ends up dying trying to keep up with Johnny.

Then we fast forward a number of years and he is in the FBI academy. Fan-fucking-tastic.

    image.png src

While he is in the academy a group of international criminals are busted robbing certain places that are meant to be totally safe but because they are extreme sport experts for some reason, they are able to get away by doing crazy things like jumping motorcycles off the side of skyscrapers and then parachuting to an escape point while the hapless police have the building surrounded. Let's just forget about the fact that we definitely have the ability to follow some people's parachutes as they travel a maximum of a couple of miles from the point that there chutes deployed.

Since none of the other FBI agents have an expertise in extreme sports, Johnny Utah is selected to go after them despite the fact that they are operating outside of the United States and would be beyond their jurisdiction anyway. Whatever right? America gets to do whatever they want!

Johnny has a hunch that the group of extreme sport criminals are going to attend a middle of the ocean surfing expose that only happens when certain tropical storms occur. When they find this super-secret location in the Atlantic there are hundreds of people already in attendance. Not that secret now is it?

    image.png src

By sheer chance Johnny just happens to drop in on the same wave as one of the criminals and because of this they form a bond and become friends. Johnny now gets to be a part of the gang. Hooray! What are the chances?

Compare this to the way that Keanu Reeve's "Johnny Utah" infiltrated Bodhi's gang in the original film: By way of getting hair samples from surfers on the beach law enforcement is able to only nail down an approximate location of where the gang regularly surfs. Johnny then proceeds to learn how to surf and ends up working his way into the gang slowly. His meeting of Swayze's "Bodie" wasn't just some random bullshit encounter where they both ended up on the same wave. The modern Utah did nothing to infiltrate the gang, he just randomly ends up with them despite the fact that there were hundreds of other people there. It's a stupid!

The story and acting unfortunately doesn't really get any better: For one thing, they chose actors to play the roles of the gang members that have barely understandable accents in English. I had to turn on the subtitles but then quickly turned them off because the dialogue seems as though it was written by 6th graders who know nothing about what it is like to be an adult.

    image.png src

One of the only things that I can say to this film's credit is some of the extreme sport scenes are really damn cool. I don't even know if wing-suits existed in 1991 but one thing is for sure, we didn't have the ability to film it in the way that they did in the remake of the film. These scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat and they do a great job of making things feel really intense. This is also true of a later scene that involves free climbing. It would have been very difficult or impossible for them to pull this off back in the early 90's.

One amusing aspect that I noticed during all the group stunts was that each member of the crew always wears the same color outfit so that you can determine who is who when they have helmets on. Color coordination is important!

There are so many things that are extremely lame about this production and the fact that it has over 5/10 on review sites makes me think that a lot of people don't even know what the first Point Break even is and probably think the Fast and Furious films are good cinema.

    Should I watch it?

The stunts in it are pretty awesome but the rest of the film is pure trash. Even if the original Point Break had never been made I would feel the same way about this movie. It's just BAD. The everything-falls-into-place storyline, the words of wisdom from the criminal gang are cringe AF, and the forced (as well as immediate) love story that thankfully doesn't waste too much of our time is annoying rather than something you get invested in like we did in the original story. Why they felt compelled to hire actors who can barely speak English is something that I cannot understand at all seeing as how this film was marketed almost exclusively to an English-speaking audience.

Other than the stunt scenes this movie has no redeeming qualities to speak of

stay-away.jpg From my research this can be streamed at no additional cost with AppleTV+ and can be rented or purchased from almost anywhere else. I would strongly encourage that you not do so

  2. CineTV Contest: Point Break@irenenavarroart1167d

Greetings movie lovers, this week of the Cinetv Contest proposes us to share heist movies, I've been thinking since the last time I participated with the Keanu Reeves theme about how good a movie Point Break is, so this is my choice of this week and I'll tell you why.

    Point Break (1991)

There are several elements that I consider make this one of the best heist movies, this is about a gang of bank robbers that the media call the gang of ex-presidents, because they wear masks of former presidents of the United States, this is the something that plays a bit like social and political satire, although the film is not about social criticism, having opted for this small prop element gave the film an iconic character, it becomes almost unforgettable for someone to see that the assailants had Putting on these masks of world-renowned former presidents, even for Latin American countries like mine, where everyone easily recognizes the face of Nixon or Reagan, to take an example.

In addition, what is most striking to me is the motivation of the robbers, although the majority of people who dedicate their lives to theft do so with ambition intentions, that is, having large amounts of money, this money really represents what all people would like, that is, who would not like to have money to buy things, but this band and in particular its leader have a very hedonistic motive, the search for pleasure that gives them the practice of extreme sports such as surfing, skydiving or any other activity that generates adrenaline, many people commit crimes because they are addicted to a drug, but in this case the addition is to adrenaline, but it is also a way of always living in search of a new exciting experience, living on the edge where you feel a certain freedom that nothing else can offer, however, it takes money to live that way and therefore robbing banks becomes the search for resources and at the same time joins the activity of seeking thrills every time stronger, I do not at any time validate the motives of these assailants in the film, but without a doubt it is something that any human being could feel, wanting to experience emotions that make them feel fully alive and in this sense the viewer has a certain empathy with the raiders.

It is not surprising then because of the above, that the character in the movie in charge of being the good side, that is, the side of the law, the policeman who has the mission to infiltrate the gang of criminals, begins to have a close relationship with the gang leader, so much so that he understands the motives but does not support the means they are taking to live in that lifestyle, so in a short period of time he struggles internally to not empathize with the gang leader, as the cop falls in love with the gang leader's ex-girlfriend and arguably begins to be friends with him.

As for the failures of the robbery plan of the gang of the former presidents, I consider that the overconfidence played against them, because the plan was somewhat simple but that simplicity guaranteed them effectiveness, they always took the same amount of seconds in the robbery, this allowed them to leave in time to avoid the response of law enforcement, they always went for the money that was in the boxes and never wasted time trying to steal the vault because this would ruin the plan, however, they to have many successful robberies felt overconfidence, so much so that the first mistake cost them a lot, because if one of the robbers had never shown his backside to a security camera they would never have seen that he had a tan mark that would allow them to suspect that the gang were surfers, the other big mistake that the leader made was to take certain reprisals against the policeman when he was discovered, retaliations that went let's say to an attempt or persuaded form, but it was noticeable that he did not want to kill him, it was a total stupidity to have taken the policeman to the last bank robbery and to change the plan for the first time, that is to say to go to look for the money of the vault.

    image.png

    Source

As I said at the beginning I would not be on the side of the thieves, but I consider that the plan failed because of their overconfidence and those obvious mistakes, taking huge risks in a plan that they had elaborated and already had successful results, motivated by revenge to the policeman who had discovered them, I do not think it was the smartest way out of trouble, in the end after much persecution where both the gang leader and the policeman had lost their respective partners, the duel of the two doesn't really happen the way it is expected, neither can really kill the other, however, when finally the cop after a few months locates the gang leader in the same place where he dreamed of surfing in Australia, he doesn't arrest him but lets him go to the sea knowing that he would die by the waves, it is there where you see that the cop understands the nature of the soul of the gang leader and understands that this is the way he wants to die.

  3. Insomniac Movie Marathon: Point Break (2015)@rvgenaille2441d

    image -via IMDb.com

In general, I try to tell myself that reboots and remakes are, for the most part, nothing to be afraid of. They are going to happen because Hollywood is show business and the business of making movies goes through phases of repetition and familiarity sells. People forget that John Carpenter's The Thing, for example, is a remake and is a classic. In fairness, the current run of remakes and reboots have felt like a cynical ploy but that is only because those of us who saw the originals in theatres are seeing them again in this new form and it isn't comfortably gelling with our nostalgia. Make no mistake, whatever you think of their quality, remakes and reboots like the recent Ghostbusters or this version of Point Break are not, retroactively, ruining your childhood.

The original, 1991 film, Point Break was a star-making turn, for Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, despite its relatively average box office take. This new one stars Edgar Ramirez and Luke Bacey in the titular roles of Bodhi and Utah. Utah is with the FBI and he is hunting extreme sports criminal Bodhi as he travels the world committing extreme crimes while doing so in extreme athletic performances. The difference between this Utah and Reeves' is that this one was also into extreme sports. This is where this film attempts to up the ante over the original and compete with the current run of tentpole action flicks and superhero movies.

This movie was an okay film. It suffers from being attached to the Point Break brand. Had it been just another action film about extreme sports criminals, it probably would have done better in theatres because it is a globe trotting, adventure that glories in thrilling photography of extreme athletics. I'm not sure if they were computer enhanced or not but they were neat. I was surprised by that. The actors were okay, no one was memorable but they didn't suck either.

It's harmless fun, it suffers from being called Point Break.

  4. Point Break: We didn't need a reboot@gooddream2947d

Point Break is one of those epic films that someone was always going to come along and remake. I normally accuse these directors and writers of being lazy and having no imagination but Hollywood will continue to do it because: Money.

The original Point Break film made in 1991 stars Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze as well as a bunch of other people (including Anthony Kieidis from Red Hot Chili Peppers.) The acting is fantastic, even Keanu's. I consider Patrick Swayze one of my favorite actors from the 80's and 90's so him appearing as the main villain was a very welcome addition for me.

    Point-Break-1996-movie-hd-wallpaper.jpg

Reeves plays the role of Johnny Utah, an ex football player who is now an FBI agent and is assigned to investigate a group of bank robbers known as the "Ex-Presidents" because of the masks they wear when robbing the banks.

    hqdefault.jpg

They are successful in robbing the banks because they are efficient and never too greedy. They never go for the vault and they are in and out long before the police arrive. It is discovered that the "Ex-Presidents" are surfers somehow (I don't remember how this is discovered) but Utah must learn how to surf in order to infiltrate their organization. I can surf....barely... it is very difficult and i think the film portrays his difficulty in learning pretty accurately.

He manages to win over the trust of Swayze, who he later discovers is the leader of the group. There is a bit of a problem because Reeves and Swayze genuinely get along so "Utah" faces a bit of an ethical dilemma of busting what has become his good friend.

Since this is a Hollywood film, you already know that the good guys win. I personally think the film would have been better if Reeves had decided that hanging with his newfound friends is actually better than his devotion to his job with the FBI - then we could have had a sequel as well. However, despite the fact that the film takes the usual path of virtue always wins, it doesn't end in the usual boring way that we expect. I won't spoil this part for the people out there that haven't seen it (and if you have seen the remake and NOT the original, I am disappointed in you.)

    Here is the trailer

The trailer doesn't do the film justice. This is just the way trailers were in the early 90's.

I rate this movie pretty highly because it is fantastic for an action film. It has great acting, a unique storyline, and some interesting cinematography as well as crazy stunts.
