In 2018, Tomb Raider was released, a film reboot of the Tomb Raider game franchise, and the previous Lara Croft:Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vicander as Lara Croft. This is very much an origin story for Lara Croft.
This Croft is a young neophyte to the world of archaeology, and adulthood, working as a bike courier in London, ignoring her inheritance as she refuses to accept her father’s death. When she discovers a clue to his last known whereabouts and mission, she is off to the far side of the world to search for him.
Chaos ensues.
Vikander handles the role with aplomb, though she is really put through her paces. Croft takes a beating in this film. This is not the practiced, smooth operator that Angelina Jolie portrayed, this one makes mistakes, messes up, gets scared.
Dominic West is his her father, Richard Croft, Daniel Wu is Lu Ren, her boat captain, and Walter Goggins is Vogel, the bad guy representing Triniti, an evil organization determined to unleash some supernatural evil upon the world.
This is a fun film, it doesn’t break any new ground- there are beats that feel like they are right out of Indiana Jones- but it is entertaining and Vikander is good here. I hope she gets to do more of these, or at least more action.
Fun entertainment.
