Context

The masterplan

His sith apprentice ended up dying, it’s true, but this did not alter the fundamentals of his plan: next step would be war.

A war in which HE was the commander of BOTH armies, the separatist army and the republic army; but the republic army only came into existence because he had the clones get into production and when they were ready for deployment, he made the separatist increase hostilities to the point in which the Senate of the Republic would give him, the chancellor, special executive powers to conduct the republic in those dangerous times, similarly to how in reality the roman senate would appoint someone as a temporary dictator. Now the Republic had an army, and made of clones, which are better fighters than droids.

Now it was left the last part of the masterplan: exterminate the jedi order, get as his sith apprentice the chosen one of the force (which was the jedi’s hope), and get himself become emperor with the approval of the Senate, finalizing the war he started with him having gained absolute power of the galaxy, both as a politician and as a sith.

The victory

And so it happens in The Revenge of the Sith: his “kidnap” by Count Dooku, his apprentice, ended up with him luring Anakin to kill a defeated Dooku against the jedi code. It is reveled in an afterwords conversation between Anakin and Obi-Wan that he has managed to stay in office long after his term had expired and that the Senate was going to vote to give even more executive powers. After those first heated initial minutes of the movie, Anakin remains in Coruscant, where his conversations with Palpatine and the distrust he perceives from the jedi council towards him (incited by Palpatine, and master Windu did not help matters because he indeed did not trust him) has his own trust in them shaken. Knowing Palpatine that Anakin was worried that his wife would die in childbirth (and Anakin had first talked, without revealing it was his wife, talked to master Yoda about his visions of death, but the old jedi “rejoice in those who joined the Force” did not calmed him) Palpatine goes as far as to say that the sith and the jedi are not so disimilar, and tells him about a sith legend in which a sith had discovered through the dark side how to stop people from dying. To worsen things Obi-Wan and Yoda leave the planet to go on war missions.

And it’s in that moment, when Anakin’s first mentor and best friend and the wisest and most powerful jedi are away that Palpatine reveals himself as THE sith lord, and asks Anakin to become his apprentice, through which he could gain the power to save his wife, and so the fruit of temptation is laid in front of the chosen one.

At first Anakin does the jedi way: he informs master Windu of it, and while Windu rejects Anakin’s help in arresting the Chancellor, Anakin later goes by himself, where he finds Windu having defeated Palpatine (did he let himself loose for sensing Anakin was approaching? That has been always my thought). And then the fruit of temptation comes even closer to Anakin’s face for Windu attempts to go against the jedi way and kill Palpatine right there while he takes the great risk of doing nothing except beg and whimper, trusting Anakin will save him… and he does, cutting off Windu’s arm, and a Palpatine in exatasis shows his POWER! UNLIMITED POWER!

Windu dies, and darth Vader is born: the chosen one ate the forbidden fruit of knowledge of the dark side, and then Palpatine reveals his final trump card: order 66, the secret order for all the clones (whom, remember, came into existence and into his service by his doings prior to this movie) eliminate the jedi, while Anakin-Vader leads the attack on the jedi temple and eliminates even the children himself.

Another great hit in his villanousness: Palpatine says, and is believed for everyone, that the jedi attempted to his life and tried to overtake the Republic, to finalize this revelation that to ensure security and continuing stability, the republic will be reorganized into the first galactic empire, for a safe and secure society: and so liberty dies with a thunderous applause from the Senate.

Absolute victory: his long master plan had worked. Such a victory that the chosen one, that in whom the jedi had their hopes put to bring balance to the force, understanding balance as something that would benefit the jedi, was turned to his side, the sith and dark side, despite being a disappointment that Anakin would lose his fight against Obi-Wan and ended up having to live in a mechanical suit. Also, he faced one to one Yoda, the greatest jedi, whom he had wanted to attack for a long time which makes him laugh at times during the fight, and sort of ties with him, but with the match tied meaning his victory for he was now the reigning champion, hence his laughter at the end of the fight.

It can be said, of course, that Palpatine loses at the end because Darth Vader kills him in episode 6. But that happened after he reigned as emperor for around 30 years. Such a long tyranny happened thanks to his long masterplan which came into full fruition in the Revenge of the Sith, hence why I deem Palpatine, Darth Sidious, a villain who looked for power for power’s sake, one of the greatest villains of all time.

So to finalize, the interpretation: Ian McDiarmid’ great work from beginning to end deserves a special note for Revenge of the Sith: in it he performed a very “showy” face; not overacting, but beign exaggerated with seriousness in a way that it’s at the same time fun for the viewer, hence delivering his lines in a quite emotional and remarkable and “being-verymemeable” way. It could have been disastrous ‘cos there’s a thin line separating what he marvelously did and being exaggerated to the point of being cringe, yet instead we got memes for the eternity, such as the aforementioned POWER! UNLIMITED POWER!, or “[Windu]The senate will decide your fate”, “[Palpatine]I AM THE SENATE”

Palpatine, el villano cuyo plan maestro funcionó Contexto Un villano es un antagonista; no todos los antagonistas son villanos, pero los antagonistas que lo son, lo son porque no son meros rivales o competidores de los protagonistas, sino porque representan lo contrario en términos de valores a ellos. Así, en la guerra de las galaxias, los protagonistas son los jedis, los usuarios del lado luminoso o bueno de la Fuerza, pacíficos, compasivos, tranquilos. Y los antagonistas y villanos son los sith, los usuarios del lado oscuro y malo de la Fuerza, luchadores, despiadados, emocionales.

El plan maestro Crear un bloqueo bélico en el planeta del que era senador a sabiendas de que la burocracia de la República sería inútil para detenerlo; entonces sugirió a su jefa (la reina) que un nuevo canciller podría ayudarles, consejo que ella acabó ejecutando, y voilá, el senador fue elegido como nuevo canciller porque el bloqueo que creó no sólo llevó a la destitución del actual canciller, sino que también le ganó la simpatía y la autoridad teórica de los demás para ser el que dirigiera los asuntos actuales. Su aprendiz de sith acabó muriendo, es cierto, pero eso no alteró lo fundamental de su plan: el siguiente paso sería la guerra. Una guerra en la que ÉL era el comandante de AMBOS ejércitos, el ejército separatista y el ejército de la república; pero el ejército de la república sólo llegó a existir porque él hizo que los clones entraran en producción y, cuando estuvieron listos para su despliegue, hizo que los separatistas aumentaran las hostilidades hasta el punto de que el Senado de la República le otorgara a él, el canciller, poderes ejecutivos especiales para dirigir la república en esos tiempos peligrosos, de forma similar a como en la realidad el senado romano nombraría a alguien como dictador temporal. Ahora la República tenía un ejército, y hecho de clones, que son mejores luchadores que los droides. Ahora quedaba la última parte del plan maestro: exterminar a la orden jedi, conseguir como aprendiz sith al elegido de la fuerza (que era la esperanza de los jedi), y conseguir él mismo convertirse en emperador con la aprobación del Senado, finalizando la guerra que inició con él habiendo conseguido el poder absoluto de la galaxia, tanto como político como sith.

La victoria Y así sucede en La Venganza de los Sith: su "secuestro" por el Conde Dooku, su aprendiz, acabó con él atrayendo a Anakin para que matara a un Dooku derrotado en contra del código jedi. En una conversación posterior entre Anakin y Obi-Wan se revela que ha conseguido mantenerse en el cargo mucho tiempo después de que su mandato haya expirado y que el Senado iba a votar para darle aún más poderes ejecutivos. Después de esos primeros y acalorados minutos iniciales de la película, Anakin permanece en Coruscant, donde sus conversaciones con Palpatine y la desconfianza que percibe del consejo jedi hacia él (incitada por Palpatine, y el maestro Windu no ayudó en nada porque efectivamente no confiaba en él) hace que su propia confianza en ellos se tambalee. Al saber Palpatine que Anakin estaba preocupado porque su mujer muriera en el parto (y Anakin había hablado primero, sin revelar que era su mujer, habló con el maestro Yoda sobre sus visiones de la muerte, pero el viejo jedi "se alegra de los que se unen a la Fuerza" no le calmó) Palpatine llega a decir que los sith y los jedi no son tan dispares, y le cuenta una leyenda sith en la que un sith había descubierto a través del lado oscuro cómo evitar que la gente muriera. Para empeorar las cosas Obi-Wan y Yoda abandonan el planeta para ir a misiones de guerra. Y es en ese momento, cuando el primer mentor y mejor amigo de Anakin y el jedi más sabio y poderoso están lejos que Palpatine se revela como EL señor sith, y le pide a Anakin que se convierta en su aprendiz, a través del cual podría obtener el poder para salvar a su esposa, y así el fruto de la tentación se pone delante del elegido. Al principio Anakin lo hace a la manera de los jedi: informa al maestro Windu de ello, y mientras Windu rechaza la ayuda de Anakin para detener al Canciller, Anakin acude más tarde por su cuenta, donde encuentra a Windu habiendo derrotado a Palpatine (¿se soltó por intuir que Anakin se acercaba? Esa ha sido siempre mi opinión). Y entonces el fruto de la tentación se acerca aún más a la cara de Anakin, pues Windu intenta ir en contra de la manera jedi y matar a Palpatine allí mismo, mientras se arriesga a no hacer nada más que suplicar y gemir, confiando en que Anakin le salvará... y lo hace, cortando el brazo de Windu, y un Palpatine en exatasis muestra su ¡PODER! ¡PODER ILIMITADO! Windu muere, y nace darth Vader: el elegido comió la fruta prohibida del conocimiento del lado oscuro, y entonces Palpatine revela su última baza: la orden 66, la orden secreta para que todos los clones (que, recordemos, llegaron a existir y a su servicio por sus hechos anteriores a esta película) eliminen a los jedis, mientras Anakin-Vader dirige el ataque al templo jedi y elimina hasta a los propios niños.

Otro gran acierto en su villanía: Palpatine dice, y se lo cree todo el mundo, que los jedi atentaron contra su vida y trataron de sobrepasar a la República, para finalizar esta revelación de que para garantizar la seguridad y la estabilidad continua, la república será reotganizada en el primer imperio galáctico, para una sociedad segura y protegida: y así la libertad muere con un estruendoso aplauso del Senado. Victoria absoluta: su largo plan maestro había funcionado. Una victoria tal que el elegido, aquel en el que los jedi tenían puestas sus esperanzas para traer el equilibrio a la fuerza, entendiendo el equilibrio como algo que beneficiaría a los jedi, se pasó a su bando, el de los sith y el lado oscuro, a pesar de ser una decepción que Anakin perdiera su lucha contra Obi-Wan y acabara teniendo que vivir en un traje mecánico. Además, se enfrentó uno a uno a Yoda, el más grande de los jedis, al que llevaba mucho tiempo queriendo atacar, lo que le hace reír por momentos durante la pelea, y en cierto modo empatar con él, pero con el combate empatado emanando su victoria pues ahora era el campeón reinante, de ahí su risa al final de la pelea. Se puede decir, por supuesto, que Palpatine pierde al final porque Darth Vader lo mata en el episodio 6. Pero eso ocurrió después de que reinara como emperador durante unos 30 años. Tan larga tiranía ocurrió gracias a su largo plan maestro que se concretó en la Venganza de los Sith, de ahí que considere a Palpatine, Darth Sidious, un villano que buscaba el poder por el poder, uno de los mejores villanos de todos los tiempos. Así que para finalizar, la interpretación: El gran trabajo de Ian McDiarmid de principio a fin merece una nota especial para La venganza de los Sith: en ella realizó un rostro muy "vistoso"; no sobreactuando, pero sí exagerando con la siriosidad de una manera que es al mismo tiempo divertida para el espectador, de ahí que entregue sus líneas de una manera bastante emotiva y notable y "siendo-memorable". Podría haber sido desastroso porque hay una delgada línea que separa lo que hizo maravillosamente y ser exagerado hasta el punto de ser cringe, sin embargo, en su lugar tenemos memes para la eternidad, como el ya mencionado ¡PODER! PODER ILIMITADO!, o "[Windu]El senado decidirá tu destino", "[Palpatine]YO SOY EL SENADO"
