This is the auto-biography of the french Novelist Henri Charriere. He was convicted for murder by the French courts in 1931. After much struggles and escape attempts he later escaped the penal colony ,being one of the two only successful escapees from the collection of islands in French Guiana.
Plot
A young guy named Henri Charriere Papillon played by Charlie Hunnam receives a fake murder conviction. Henri strikes a pact with fellow prisoner Louis Dega played by Rami Malek in an effort to escape the Devil's Island penal facility.
This film is actually a remake of the 1973 prison thriller still named Papillon but casted by Steve McQueen as Charriere Papillon and Dustin Hoffman as Louis Dega.
The 2017 movie starts in 1931 Paris, the safecracker, whose nickname was Papillon (french for butterfly) came from the tattoo on his chest, was framed for murder and was dispatched to a Penal Colony in French Guiana. Upon getting to the colony, Papillon worked on many escape attempts which failed and caused him to be moved from one hellhole to another until he lands on Devil's Island.
Although most critics would say the remake was a disgrace and it should have never happened, but I think that Michael Noer and his cast did an outstanding job on the film and also did most of the public for it got a 7.2/10 star review on IMDb. With over 5 million dollars made overseas and over 2 million made domestically I believe Michael is very happy with himself 🙂.
