Anteprima - Conversazione fra amici 1

Review by @serialfiller · 1430d · of Conversations with Friends

Come sempre vi aspetto su www.serialfiller.org.

https://www.serialfiller.org/lastposts This is the future link to the post that I am inviting you to read in the coming days at www.serialfiller.org and which is previewed here

As usual, today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to constantly give you, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.

Another literary adaptation?

More Sally Rooney?

Still Hulu?

Conversations With Friends is a miniseries, coming out in mid-2022 on Hulu and based, once again, on a book of the same name. The author, of the book, is Sally Rooney, former creator of Normal People, needless to say previously adapted for television by Hulu itself. Here you will find the review of Normal People which, incidentally, has nothing to do with the series we are going to analyze today but which will give you, may give you, a clear idea of what Sally Rooney's "fixation" is and how important Ireland, love and the unconventionality of love relationships are to her. To make it easier for you, before we delve into Conversations With Friends, I leave you with the review of Normal People.

In opening this brief review, I cannot help but confess something that may seem slightly snooty. When I started binge watching Conversations With Friends, I had not gathered any information about the show I was about to watch. This is a practice I adopt very often and it helps me enjoy individual series more objectively, leaving more room for surprise. Conversations With Friends had ended up in my serial notebook for a very simple reason. Some of the most well-known and reliable Western sites/blogs on film and TV series had listed it among the best series of this year. For me, who has a serial blog and has an innate curiosity for surprises and quality shows, Conversations With Friends represented a milestone within my watchlist. So it was that, having returned from vacation I decided that I would devote a couple of evenings to catching up on the Hulu show. But why am I telling you all this? Do I want to turn the blog into a diary? No, although that might be an idea (I see no harm in it). I was telling about my ignorance of the show's details to brag about the fact that, at the end of the pilot, it was clear in me from the start that Conversations With Friends had incurred a gigantic narrative and structural debt to Normal People. Discovering, then, that the pen that had stained the pages of one was the same pen that had stained the pages of the other, made me realize how observant and (can I say it?) good I have become at juxtaposing, analyzing, and comparing serial material. Self-serving aside, is Conversations With Friends really a must-see series?

Hard, really hard to answer that question. Conversations With Friends is, as was Normal People, a series shot on a shoestring budget, based totally on interpretations, silences and torment. It is a series you would call slow, and if for you a slow series is, usually, also a bad, boring, yawning series then who am I to tell you that Conversations With Friends will not leave the same impression on you. Hulu's show, however, just as it did with Normal People, is capable of granting you a strange addiction to itself and generating a murky immersive effect that, in words, is hard to explain. As I was about to write this article, I played a strange mind game. I tried to tell myself the essential plot of the show by trying to clear my head of what the series had left me with. The result was, I must admit, alienating. I realized that the plot, stripped of those feelings that the series manages to give you, would not be so different from a drab Channel 5 drama. We have 4 people. 2 are married. 2 are friends, and ex-girlfriends. They are all, tend to be writers/actors, and they all find themselves, at some point, sharing dinners, events, moments together, becoming, precisely, friends who like to converse and be together. One of the girls, Frances, will fall in love with Nick, Michelle's husband. A clandestine affair will be born between the 2, which no one, up to a certain point, will notice. There will be time for evisceration of the betrayal, for reversals of front, tantrums, inner torment and new love but basically, put like that, it seems like just yet another story of love and betrayal like so many others we have seen over the decades. So what? Why watch what appears to be a fiction written by a Viale Mazzini employee assigned as an annual task to write 50 pages of scripts for the upcoming "Un Posto Al Sole"? Because, of course, the show goes far beyond this banal, and trivial, plot.

Conversations With Friends, as well as Normal People before it, tells us about love and the conventions we apply to love relationships and love as a feeling. Nick is a married man, just coming out of a severe depression, who still loves Michelle, his wife, despite obvious communication and chemistry problems. Is that enough? Is it enough to move on? Is it enough to preclude a new love or, at least, the search for a love that is more real, intense, and current? Melissa is a strong woman, an established author whose career is at the top. Is it correct that her ambition is held back by the canonical love we have imposed on ourselves for centuries? That of a woman seen as companion, friend, mother, sister of men in need and perpetually on the prowl for attention? Melissa and Nick seem like a fairy tale couple when viewed from the outside. Seen from the inside, however, it will show its huge cracks, like perhaps, and unfortunately, all other couples in this world who have been together for years and struggle to renew and revive their relationship. Viewed from this perspective, is the couple functioning? Is it still to be considered a fairy tale couple? The privileged perspective enjoyed by the viewer is granted only because of the encroachment of Frances and Bobbi, the 2 other stars of the show.
