¡Hola amigos! Hace unas semanas que no me pasaba por acá con alguna nueva reseña. A veces me pasa que veo cosas, pero no me apetece reseñarlas en el momento.
Hello friends! It's been a few weeks since I last stopped by with a new review. Sometimes I see things, but I don't feel like reviewing them at the moment.
Hoy les quiero compartir mi opinión sobre la serie Conversaciones con amigos, que se estrenó el pasado 15 de mayo.
Today I want to share with you my opinion about the series Conversations with Friends, which premiered last May 15.
Está serie está basada en la novela de Sally Rooney que lleva el mismo nombre y fue publicada en el 2017. Esta vez no leí este libro, pero quería ver la serie porque vi que se creó cierta polémica al respecto y me dio curiosidad. Sabía más o menos por dónde venía la mano, pero a veces quiero experimentarlo por mi cuenta.
This series is based on the novel by Sally Rooney that bears the same name and was published in 2017. This time I didn't read this book, but I wanted to watch the series because I saw that some controversy was created about it and I was curious. I knew more or less where the hand was coming from, but sometimes I want to experience it on my own.
Trama - Plot
La historia está ambientada en Dublín y se centra en Frances Flynn (Alison Oliver), una universitaria de 21 años, y su mejor amiga Bobbi Connolly (Sasha Lane), que resulta también ser su ex novia. Frances y Bobbi suelen recitar poesías algunas noches en una especie de bar. Allí conocen a Melissa Conway (Jemima Kirke), una escritora muy famosa que queda cautivada por su actuación. Bobbi y Melissa conectan bastante rápido y las invita a su casa para una comida y conocerse mejor, ya que Frances es la que escribe los poemas y hace los guiones para la recitación y a Melissa le llamó la atención. Todo muy normal por ahora, pónganle.
The story is set in Dublin and centers on Frances Flynn (Alison Oliver), a 21-year-old university student, and her best friend Bobbi Connolly (Sasha Lane), who also happens to be her ex-girlfriend. Frances and Bobbi often recite poetry some nights at a bar of sorts. There they meet Melissa Conway (Jemima Kirke), a very famous writer who is captivated by their performance. Bobbi and Melissa connect pretty quickly and she invites them over to her house for a meal to get to know each other better, since Frances is the one who writes the poems and scripts the recitation and Melissa caught her eye. All very normal so far, put her on.
Cuando van a su casa conocen al marido de Melissa, Nick Conway (Joe Alwyn), quien se dedica a la actuación y parece ser un tipo bastante tranquilo y aburrido. Pero resulta que Frances y Nick logran conectar por su cuenta. Ahí las cosas se ponen complicadas porque empiezan una relación ilícita. Además Bobbi parece estar muy interesada en Melissa y, como si fuera poco, podría ser que Frances todavía tiene sentimientos románticos hacía esta. Pero, ¿qué podría salir mal? ¿Será este un caso de felices los 4?
When they go to their house they meet Melissa's husband, Nick Conway (Joe Alwyn), who is into acting and seems to be a pretty quiet and boring guy. But it turns out that Frances and Nick manage to connect on their own. That's when things get complicated because they start an illicit relationship. Plus Bobbi seems to be very interested in Melissa and, as if that wasn't enough, it could be that Frances still has romantic feelings for Melissa. But what could go wrong? Will this be a case of happy 4?
Opinión personal - Personal opinion
Supongo que se imaginarán que la serie va de infidelidades, pero en realidad quiere hacer el intento de ilustrar lo que es el amor libre y las relaciones abiertas. Aunque sí me preguntan no creo que haya estado bien logrado. Se supone que estas cosas se charlan en parejas y acá hubo claras infidelidades, así que todo es un poco confuso. Por favor, si con lo que les conté en la trama me quedo corta de todas las otras cosas que pasan, pero no quiero hacerles spoilers.
I guess you can imagine that the series is about infidelity, but it really wants to try to illustrate what free love and open relationships are all about. Although if you ask me, I don't think it was well done. These things are supposed to be discussed in couples and here there were clear infidelities, so it's all a bit confusing. Please, if with what I've told you about the plot I've left out all the other things that happen, but I don't want to give you spoilers.
Les voy a ser súper sincera, no me gustó esta serie, muchas veces me encontré pensando en porqué estaba mirando esto, era un WTF constante. Encima la trama incluía otras subtramas que eran sobre temas importantes que se los trato muy por arriba.
I'm going to be super honest, I didn't like this series, many times I found myself wondering why I was watching this, it was a constant WTF. On top of that the plot included other subplots that were about important issues that were treated way over the top.
En un momento tocaron la endometriosis que sufre Frances, que se descubre durante la serie, ella no sabía que la tenía. Sufría de dolores menstruales incapacitantes, en un momento pensaron que estaba teniendo un aborto espontáneo. Ahí fue cuando se iniciaron las alarmas y empezaron a buscar qué es lo que tenía.
At one point they touched on the endometriosis that Frances suffers from, which is discovered during the series, she didn't know she had it. She suffered from incapacitating menstrual pains, at one point they thought she was having a miscarriage. That's when the alarm bells went off and they started looking for what she had.
Por otro lado, su padre sufre de alcoholismo y creo que de depresión también, en un momento parece que tuvo una especie de sobredosis pero no lo mostraron en pantalla, quedó implícito que estaba empezando una nueva rehabilitación. Entiendo que la historia no trata sobre esto, pero si lo ponen por lo menos me gustaría que lo traten bien. Cabe decir que Nick también padece depresión y todos los personajes coinciden en que su estado de ánimo mejoró desde que conoció a Frances. No me digan.
On the other hand, his father suffers from alcoholism and I think depression as well, at one point it looks like he had some sort of overdose but they didn't show it on screen, it was implied that he was starting a new rehab. I understand that the story is not about this, but if they do put him in at least I would like them to treat him well. It should be said that Nick also suffers from depression and all the characters agree that his mood improved since he met Frances. Don't tell me.
Además en ciertos momentos se ponía media aburrida y densa de procesar, ¿por qué la seguía viendo? La verdad es que no lo sé. Tiene algo que me hacía querer continuarla de todos modos. Al final pareció que cobraba sentido, pero después volvió a decaer. Aparte los capítulos eran más o menos de 30 minutos de duración, a veces menos y son 12. Así que re tranqui en ese sentido, se puede ver en un fin de semana.
Plus at certain times it would get kind of boring and dense to process, why did I keep watching it? I really don't know. There was something about it that made me want to continue watching it anyway. At the end it seemed to make sense, but then it went downhill again. Besides, the chapters were more or less 30 minutes long, sometimes less, and there are 12. So it's really quiet in that sense, you can watch it in a weekend.
Palabras finales - Final words
Sin dudas no es mi tipo de serie, a lo mejor fue el tema o de verdad fue muy meh en mi vida. Pero por lo menos me saqué la curiosidad y pude hacer mi propia opinión al respecto. Obviamente que a mí no me haya gustado no significa que a otro no le pueda gustar. Queda a gusto del consumidor.
It's definitely not my kind of series, maybe it was the theme or it was really meh in my life. But at least I got my curiosity out and was able to make my own opinion about it. Obviously, just because I didn't like it doesn't mean that someone else won't like it. It's up to the consumer.
