Perchè vive in quella casa?
This is the future link to the post that I am inviting you to read in the coming days at www.serialfiller.org and which is previewed here
As usual, today I am bringing you inside a new Preview of an article that in a few days or weeks you will see In the Mind of a SerialFiller, my blog entirely focused on the world of TV series and of which, for the past few months, I have decided to constantly give you, in advance of what I will publish, most of the posts you will see on www.serialfiller.org.
Do you still remember anything about the third season of Westworld?
Were you waiting for the fourth?
In any case, is the Joy - Nolan pair a guarantee?
Westworld returns 2 years after the end of season 3 and does so with a premierè that to call anticlimactic is putting it mildly. The robots, the synthetics, the androids, the big machines dominated and dominated by artificial intelligence are a vague memory. Not so are our most cherished characters, from William to Maeve via Caleb and Dolores. We return to Westworld but away from Westworld is this generates the first level of disorientation. The second, and perhaps the one that is most troubling, is related to the feeling of emptiness resulting from watching the first episode. Did it also happen to you to have like a hole in your memory compared to what had happened just 2 years ago? I had a hard time reconnecting the dots of the various storylines and this I think weakened my concentration and mental presence while watching the episode.
Why is Dolores a brunette? Why does she live in that house? Why does she do that job? Why, on the other hand, is Maeve still in the fullness of her powers? Why does William want to take possession of those giant Mexican mining dates? How does he rule the cartel man's mind? How come Caleb...nothing...I can't think of any questions here...the character was flat then and seems to have come back flat in this fourth season, Aaron Paul notwithstanding. As it is or as it is not I felt a great sense of frustration. It may be me losing my marbles or having too many stories and too many series in my head, but the fact that I can remember almost nothing about what I consider to be one of the series I look forward to the most each year has given me pause. Could it be that Nolan and Joy are taking, for 2 seasons already, the longest steps? Don't get me wrong, for me Westworld is a series that not everyone can afford; it is a series that offers so much only to those who are willing to focus and dive into its intriguing discourses about maximum systems and human beings in their most complex and extraordinary sense. Such a series can certainly leave many questions and leave loose ends, more or less gigantic gaps in memory. The complexity of the plots and the chorality of the characters rejects any simplification, like it or not. And even in this return, always most welcome, the classic themes of the series return dear, although not dissected enough. There is one that impressed me more than the others and I believe, indeed I hope, may be the centerpiece of the season, not least because it is topical and ancestral. It is highlighted during a dialogue between Caleb and a colleague of his, who tells him that the revolt did not liberate them and, above all, that the Incite was not the evil beast stealing data to tell us who we would be and what we would do in the future, but had unmasked who we already were. Having done this nice analysis, the guy turns to Caleb and says something like, "What has changed for you since the uprising?" Very rhetorical question that quenches poor Caleb's enthusiasm and prompts him and us to a mammoth self-reflection. We are what we are, and it is up to us to determine our present and our future, strengthened by our past experiences. No machine, no master of Big Data will be able to shape us except by showing us exactly who we are. In Caleb's case a human being who after all that mess ended up going back to being exactly the person he was before, doing the job he did before, without anyone forcing him. Before there were robots and we complained about robots, today robots have been liberated and we complain about something else. We are what we are, precisely. Here, these are the kinds of reflections I expect from a series like Westworld. This beginning has afforded very few such moments, and that is a shame. The season is still long and there will be time and a way to redeem itself. I will leave you, while we are at it, with the review I had a chance to write at the end of the third season.
