The film adaptation, the Golden Compass, was not very successful. This is why this television transposition in addition to enthusiasm also hid a legitimate fear of failure. After seeing the first 2 episodes we can say with extreme certainty that there is no failure and probably there will not be, given the solidity of the HBO itself and of the gigantic production set up. However the start seemed quite soft, perhaps too soft, despite a large amount of events already told.

Ecco perchè questa trasposizione televisiva oltre all'entusiasmo nascondeva anche una legittima paura di fallimento. Far from being a destabilizing and impetuous start, that of His Dark Materials is still a great start. The pilot showed all the firepower of which HBO seems to be capable once again after the glories of Game of Thrones. Disruptive digital effects and sensational graphics represent a great strength. The characters and the cast seem to be particularly well-versed. The complex story but fairly linear. Perhaps the flicker, the cult scene, the quid that could be required of such an ambitious product, is missing. The quality remains very high and the desire to go ahead with the vision of the next episodes is strong. It won't be much, but it's certainly not cheap. Therefore it was promoted with full marks but waiting for the definitive quality leap here at the end of the first highly anticipated season.
Lontano da essere un avvio destabilizzante e impetuoso, quello di His Dark Materials resta comunque un ottimo avvio. Il pilot ha mostrato tutta la potenza di fuoco di cui HBO sembra essere capace ancora una volta dopo i fasti di Game of Thrones. Effetti digitali dirompenti ed una grafica sensazionale rappresentano un grande punto di forza. I personaggi ed il cast sembrano essere particolarmente indovinati. La storia complessa ma abbastanza lineare. E' mancato forse il guizzo, la scena cult, il quid in più che si potrebbe richiedere ad un prodotto cosi ambizioso. Resta comunque altissima la qualità e forte il desiderio di andare avanti con la visione dei prossimi episodi. Non sarà tantissimo ma di certo non è poco. Promossa a pieni voti dunque ma in attesa del definitivo salto di qualità di qui alla fine della prima attesissima stagione.
