  1. El multiverso “hecho polvo” - His Dark Materials: Opinion [ESP-ENG]@soldierofdreams1276d

Approximately two years ago I started watching a television series with my younger brother. We already knew that it was the continuation of that film saga called "the golden compass", and we were excited because we would finally know how the "Dust" affair ended, the Daimonions and of course the story of Lyra Belacquea: the unruly girl , intrepid and shrewd capable of knowing mysteries thanks to its compass of symbols. HBO dared to conclude the project, although I certainly had doubts as to why so much controversy and scandal against the books that served as inspiration for all this fantastic affair. Now, after watching the final season, I understand everything.

Philip Pullman's book saga is the epicenter of an incredible variety of situations in which the theories of creation, science and therefore the scientific bases (to the extent of fiction) of the multiverse are freely used. Everything converges in one place, in turn divided into a series of parallel worlds. Hence His Dark Materials is a very daring television series to address religious and scientific issues... especially religious. All apparently created to settle a form of expression towards atheism and other delicate themes in the eyes of the most sensitive viewers. Now I understand why its predecessor "The Golden Compass" was severely riddled and exposed as a form of "Heresy".

    But is it really?

¿suena loco no?

We are incapable of faithfully understanding the creation of the universe. I believe that what we know is only a small part of all that we call life, and yet the hypotheses about our origin predominate. In His Dark Materials many biblical resources are used as forms of inspiration: Adam, Eve, the serpent and sin are mentioned without a subliminal restriction or a series of representative images. The story that is presented to us says, in a few words, that an "authority" must be defeated so that freedom and truth can coexist in a multiverse of dimensions.

The protagonists in this odyssey are Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson), two children who cross dimensions to find answers without knowing that they are part of a much bigger game. Among them there is a source of magic that helps them in their adventure, which is nothing more and nothing less than "Dust", or what is scientifically known as "Dark Matter". Apparently these invincible particles are the ones that give rise to the Daimonions, which are that part of the soul linked to a living being that generally leads it to "reveal" (or not) in the form of an animal. In the television series, this invisible thing is presented as an entity with a conscience, scattered throughout the multiverse to keep it in balance. The only problem is that everyone wants to use it for wars, rebellions, authoritarianism and generally bad things.

The main thread of the story of Lyra and Will indifferently follows a battle that, before the power of Dust, involves even the very angels. Two emblematic characters appear here: on the one hand is Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and on the other Marisa Coulter (Ruth Willson). The two are united by hatred, love and indifference for their daughter Lyra, who must personify the role of sin and salvation... sounds crazy, right? I must admit that fully culminating this television series leads me to disagree with some of its symbolism. Although clearly, I respect the conception of its original creator Philip Pullman.

His Dark Materials has three seasons, one for each Pullman book. I admit that of the series of books I have only read the first, although in this one we know little about the immense background that hides the entire work. In part it was what I liked at least about the series: his fidelity. Perhaps being an HBO adaptation, the producers took the liberty of representing what caused a scandal in the literary installments and the predecessor film. If you are a person with strong religious beliefs, believe me His Dark Materials will make noise in your head.

Obviously it is fiction, although in a world as sensitive as the one we live in now, the slightest thing can generate an unprecedented mess. Although the use of Biblical material in this Pullman work is somewhat far-fetched, it is worth enjoying even with the discord it has generated among the masses. What do I think? I was only there to enjoy it, after all, I consider it impossible that something or someone can influence us when we are convinced of what we believe, whatever our belief.

His Dark Materials is a series of convictions, if you can put it that way. A work with innocent lucidity, but very elaborate for open minds. Tearing worlds apart with a dagger and asking questions of a compass may seem crazy, isn't it fantasy? I must highlight the beauty that is spread in this television series, at least visually. Many cold and summer landscapes, with contrasts of colors and environments. This fascinates me about a series with fantastic touches, because you feel very immersed in the adventure of the protagonists.

His Dark Materials is not a series for children although it may seem so. The themes that are addressed are deep, although on the surface only innocence emerges. During three seasons, a journey between parallel dimensions is witnessed, all connected by space and time. Villains? The evil characters are personified in a religious doctrine called "the magistery", who will desperately impose their authority against those who wish to challenge the pre-established designs on the origin and functioning of the universe.

Lyra is the target in the His Dark Materials odyssey. Her strong bond with love and friendship leads her to do extraordinary things together with her Daimonion Pan. Each season further opens the gap to the discovery of the epicenter of this girl's adventure, which is not fully presented until the end of the series. the second season and the start of the third, which has premiered on HBO MAX. Regarding the ending, I have to admit that he is sour but fair. An intention that Game Of Thrones tried to do but whose results we all know.

Conclution? His Dark Materials is one of those well-done television series that quenches the thirst for adventure and fantasy that our dilated pupils sometimes demand. It is short and contains very distinctive elements with respect to other works that address the issue of the multiverse... although this contemplates one or another controversy. I enjoyed the episodes of the last season and have been satisfied with the result. Missed more? Was it very slow? Is it boring? Not at all, it is already a matter of tastes and preferences. It is true that there is a lot of theology and atheism in the matter of Lyra and her friends, although come on, there are even worse things out there in the world of cinema and television.

As I said before, nothing can influence a thought when we have conviction, regardless of what we believe about the world. My recommendation: just enjoy the entertainment ;-).

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about one of my favorite series “His Dark Materials”, based on the trilogy of novels by Philip Pullman; “Northern Lights”, “The Dagger” and “The Lacquered Spyglass”. All these books written in the 90's. Produced by the BBC in conjunction with HBO, this series arrived in 2019 with its first season. Featuring a cast of: Dafne Keen, Tyler Howitt, Ian Peck, Ruta Gedmintas, Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Kate Rutter, Nabil Elouahabi, Ariyon Bakare, Geoff Bell, Georgina Campbell , among others. It is a series that masterfully combines elements such as quantum physics, theology, metaphysics and philosophy. To present us with a fantastic story of dark matter or dust, which in the world of its protagonist (Lyra), is nothing more than the representation of the soul manifested as a daemon, an animal that constantly transforms into children until they reach adulthood, when you have the definitive animal, which the Magisterium wants to control.

The second season is much more exciting and revealing than the first and takes us deeper into what dust is, its meaning and importance for all worlds. In the world of humans a new character will emerge Dr. Mary Malone, a scientist from the department of quantum physics who studies dark matter, dust. Thanks to Lyra, the scientist will make discoveries about the dust and its importance that will lead her to help Lyra understand it. Malone realizes that the dust is a consciousness and communication network of so-called angels who tell him that she must protect Lyra and that they will help her to do so. While our boys (Lyra and Will), will run into unexpected situations and the search for the subtle dagger; a weapon with powers to open windows to all worlds and cut through any material.

The search for this dagger and its bearer will play an important role in the fulfillment of the prophecy and will accompany Lyra throughout her journey to fulfill it. This season leaves us with what promises to be a more exciting third season, as Lyra is held prisoner by her mother, Will becomes aware of his role as the dagger-bearer, Lord Asriel enlists the help of the angels, and the Magisterium prepares to attack with everything This last season closes the trilogy of Pullman's books and would culminate one that is for me one of the best HBO series after Game Of Thrones. So if you like magical stories with incredible effects and magnificent cast of actors, this is your series, a 10 out of 10.

2 years ago I started to watch this HBO series called His Dark Materials, mainly because the story and the settings looked very cool and I thought the actor James McAvoy was going to be the main one. He turned out to be just a secondary actor but I still liked the show very much.

A few days ago I realized that season 2 of this show was released at the end of last year and I had missed it. It is not always possible to keep up with everything that is being released and I had completely forgotten about this series. I think this might have happened because I always wait for a series to be completely released in order to binge-watch it, and the last episode was released on December 20, so I probably was busy with other activities and events. Time went on and I simply forgot about the series. The good thing is that I finally rediscovered it and last night I finished watching season 2.

Main names associated with the film

As mentioned in the paragraph above, the most popular actor is James McAvoy, who has participated in several important films such as Split and its sequel Glass, and he has played Professor X in several X-Men films. He has participated in many more great films throughout his career but I believe the 2 characters he played in those movies are the most well-known. HBO created the trailers for the first season and it looked like this guy was going to be important, and in the background of the story, he is important, but he doesn't get much screen time and in season 2 his screen time is like 2 minutes.

The main character is played by Dafne Keen, a young actress who looks much more mature than what could be expected for her age. She is one of the best kid actors I have seen and will certainly have a great career in the years to come. I have only seen her before in the film Logan where she plays Wolverine's daughter with the same wild nature and mutant powers.

Andrew Scott is another actor I was able to recognize because he played the villain in a cool Sherlock Holmes series from a few years ago. He has participated in a handful of cool films in the past few years but just like James McAvoy, his presence in season 2 was very limited and he just played a secondary role.

In season 2 there are just 2 adult actors/actresses who received enough screen time, one of them Ruth Wilson who despite having enough previous works is an actress that I have never seen before on the screen. She plays a sort of villain even though she reiterates she just wants what's best. The other one is Ariyon Bakare, who in season 2 plays a sneaky guy who pretends to be trustworthy. The 2 most popular films where he has previously worked are Rogue One and Life, he played secondary roles in both of them.

The series has 2 directors, Jamie Childs, who always work directed episodes for TV series, he has also worked in Doctor Who, The Sandman, and a few other shows. The other director is Leanne Welham, who just like Jamie, always works directed episodes for series or shorts. In both of their cases, His Dark Materials is the most important production so far.

    What was the series about?

The series belongs to the fantasy-action genre and this will make itself clear when you see there are talking animals. There are also creatures known as daemons who are also talking animals but linked with a human, they are the same being. A daemon is like an extension of the human it is linked to.

The series begins in a world that is similar but also different than ours. In the first season, the main character named Lyra, played by Dafne Keen, lives in Jordan College, Oxford under the care of the scholars. She learns something important about a strange substance they call "dust" and will begin a journey that will take her to different worlds. Her world is extremely religious and therefore it isn't free, knowledge about certain things like "dust" is forbidden, and there is a conspiracy that makes her suspect about everything.

In season 2, the topic of multiple worlds will be properly explored, a new creature is introduced called specters which are very similar to Harry Potter's dementors. The entire series has a similar feeling to Harry Potter movies but magic is not used as much. The story so far is also not as epic but still very enjoyable. We also learn more about what is known as Dust in Lyra's world, which up to that moment was something very mysterious and magical.

The story as a whole is between 2 sides that will battle each other in an upcoming war in season 3, one led by something called the Authority, and the other by people who want to rebel and achieve freedom for all.

Besides talking animals, there are also magical artifacts, witches, magic of course, and prophecies. So all the necessary elements that a proper fantasy story needs are there. There were, however, some things that I didn't like such as silly mistakes from important characters while they were in dangerous territory, and the series of events in the entire season 2 was disorganized, I mean, it is not always possible to realize what is the goal of the characters or what are they attempting to achieve.

How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?

The performance from the cast was acceptable. In my opinion, the character with the best performance is the one played by Ruth Wilson. She does such a great work portraying the egoistic and maybe even psychopathic nature of her character.

Dafne Keen also does a good job portraying the fierce and brave nature of her character, although she could display more emotions from time to time. Her character has experienced a lot of difficulties and pain and this isn't always portrayed in her facial gestures. Maybe it could be because her character has grown insensitive after so much pain but since the character is still very young I don't think this is the case.

One of the best things about this series is the settings. We get to see so a few cool places and the CGI was also top-notch. The camera work was good but nothing really worth mentioning, it was just normal camera work. What made everything look attractive was once again, the cool settings and great CGI.

    Final thoughts

His Dark Materials is a fine fantasy series. I enjoyed the first season a bit more because it was easier to follow the plot in that one. In season 2, the characters are all scattered around in different places and everything seems messier. There wasn't as much drama or intense moments as in season 1, but at least new creatures, places, and magic artifacts were introduced.

Everything is pointing at a very epic season 3 in which we will see a multi-world battle against the Authority. However, I don't like that after 2 complete seasons they still haven't explained what is actually the Authority? Is it powerful beings from another reality? A powerful organization? I don't know. Since almost all events are related to this conflict they should have explained everything by now.

I plan to watch season 3 when it comes out, and I expect it to be the final season, otherwise, this show will run the risk of being ruined by overmilking it. But so far it remains a good show in my view.

No sé.

His Dark Materials was one of the most anticipated TV series of the year. No doubt about it. At the end of the first season, unfortunately, the expectations were not met. The HBO product had few flaws but in general it did not warm the hearts. The feeling is that there was a soul missing in this TV series to which nothing can be said in terms of technical and visual effects and with an excellent cast. We should spend 2 lines on this in an attempt to show appreciation for the HBO operation. The visual effects proved to be of the highest level, especially in the representation of the many symbols related to the novel. The casting was very good especially in the person of the always excellent Ruth Wilson. Technically impeccable with a direction always of great impact. The screenplay on the other hand may have been a sin of haste because it seemed too fast the story of some key moments related to the mythology of the universe to be told. Generally speaking, the heart, the soul was missing. The feeling is that of not being able to get attached to the characters and the story. That you can hardly get on with the vision. Not to wait for the next episode with the stomach in turmoil. That's what you'd expect from such an important TV series. What happened with Watchmen for example. With His Dark Materials, all that was missing. The reception was good but warm and anyone who has seen more than 30 TV series in his life will hardly be able to recommend such a series to a neophyte. Not because it's ugly but because it doesn't set off a spark. It's too bad, because the requirements were all there.

Peccato perchè i requisiti c'erano tutti.

In the huge TV camera of this 2019 could not miss a great fantasy series by HBO. Called to take up the legacy of Game of Thrones, from which it clearly differs in terms of themes and setting, it made its debut a few days ago one of the most awaited series of the year: His Dark Materials ..
It is the umpteenth case of adaptation of a literary work that before going on TV went from the cinema. Just think of Damon Lindelof's Watchmen who recently landed on HBO itself. The film adaptation, the Golden Compass, was not very successful. This is why this television transposition in addition to enthusiasm also hid a legitimate fear of failure. After seeing the first 2 episodes we can say with extreme certainty that there is no failure and probably there will not be, given the solidity of the HBO itself and of the gigantic production set up. However the start seemed quite soft, perhaps too soft, despite a large amount of events already told.

Far from being a destabilizing and impetuous start, that of His Dark Materials is still a great start. The pilot showed all the firepower of which HBO seems to be capable once again after the glories of Game of Thrones. Disruptive digital effects and sensational graphics represent a great strength. The characters and the cast seem to be particularly well-versed. The complex story but fairly linear. Perhaps the flicker, the cult scene, the quid that could be required of such an ambitious product, is missing. The quality remains very high and the desire to go ahead with the vision of the next episodes is strong. It won't be much, but it's certainly not cheap. Therefore it was promoted with full marks but waiting for the definitive quality leap here at the end of the first highly anticipated season.
