We really needed a movie like The Hole. A perfect film able to terrify and make us think, to be hated and loved, to make us even more cluastrophobic than we can be at the moment. This Spanish film, made by netflix, is really a big surprise. Born from the hand of a newcomer, it manages to offer us a brand new style that mixes horror with the social and personal investigation of a very particular era, very indefinable and in its own way very cruel like ours. The hole is a vertical pit. A pit in levels, hundreds of levels. Each of them metaphorically represents a plane on our social scale, as democratic but also as ruthless as the film will try to make clear to us. Every month a couple of "inhabitants" of the pit will be put to sleep and awakened in one of the hundreds of levels. Every day from level zero a table with all kinds of libations will be brought down, designed to feed all the inhabitants of the pit. At each level each inhabitant will be able to count on a few minutes of food. They will be able to eat as much as they want, limited to the amount of food left on the platform. They will not be able to keep any food. What we are witnessing is terrifying, not so much for the enormous amount of blood spilled but for the way the inhabitants of the pit behave, re-proposing the patterns that dominate society. The food on the platform would be enough for everyone and yet after a few dozen floors it runs out. The greed of the men present on the upper floors is such that all the food is squandered and does not reach the lower floors. Out of pure taste, out of pure greed. We see vandalism of all kinds. Spitting, urination and anything else while on the levels below would kill himself to eat something after days of fasting. And yet it would take very little. Enough to eat enough to feed everyone. Sound familiar? The parallelism with our society is effective, perfect and well thought out. It's even heavier when you think about the fact that from one month to the next the roles could be reversed with those who had been downstairs moved upstairs and vice versa. And then a path of revenge. Those who had suffered pillage everything now that they can, forgetting their condition lived until a few hours before. There is no solidarity, no communion, no vision but only hatred, anger, ignorance. What we see on the streets, what we see at every election. The enemy of our neighbor is the weaker one, just like in the pit. He who is on high yearns for the highest level. He who is lower is yearning for the highest level, but at the same time he would kill his neighbor, who is worse off than he is in order to eat, in order to survive. It is the mirror of reality. An unreal and unreal, irrational reality where we would have everything to live in peace, to feed everyone, to love everyone and put aside anger, resentment, resentment, hatred and instead we prefer revenge, usurpation, negligence, totalizing anger. In times of covid and quarantine this risks being a perfect film that leaves us naked in the face of the horror of the society we have built for us, in daily indifference. It's a shame about a daring but not focused final part that could have been handled better by giving this little film even greater satisfaction.
