A few days ago, in evening zapping I happened to find one of my favorite films of the last 10 years. In watching one of my favorite scenes, that of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling improvising on the "City of Stars" piano, I realized that I had never talked about La La Land.
Damien Chazelle's film is one of the best films of recent years. Oscar-nominated film and proclaimed, wrongly winner by Warren Beatty, only to abdicate for the more modest "Moonlight". Even without the most coveted statuette, it remains a masterpiece. Even if you are not fond of musicals, it is a film that I highly recommend to recover. Behind the simple songs that cover the entire duration of the film, behind 2 perfect protagonists there is much, much more.
First of all, there is a perfect direction, that of the young Chazelle who, on the second big-screen adventure, confirms to be director of Walk of fame. His love for the seventh art is palatable and La La Land is above all a tribute to cinema as a collector of dreams and energy. Technical perfection lies behind every shot, the symmetry of photography, its clean and refined machine movements are a feast for the eyes. The sequence plan with which the film opens is already the history of cinema. 4 bombastic, very fast minutes and an incredible difficulty will give you the perception of how much this filmmaker knows how to do behind the camera. It is said that it took 3 months to shoot the sequence plan of which I speak.
Qualche giorno fa, nello zapping serale mi è capitato di trovare uno dei miei film preferiti degli ultimi 10 anni. Nel guardare una delle mie scene preferite, quella di Emma Stone e Ryan Gosling che improvvisano al pianoforte "City of Stars", mi sono reso conto di non aver mai parlato di La La Land.
Il film di Damien Chazelle rappresenta una delle pellicole migliori degli ultimi anni. Film nominato all'oscar e proclamato, erroneamente vincitore da Warren Beatty, salvo poi abdicare per il più modesto "Moonlight". Anche senza la statuetta più ambita resta un capolavoro. Anche se non siete amanti del musical è un film che consiglio vivamente di recuperare. Dietro le semplici canzoni che avvolgono l'intera durata del film, dietro 2 protagonisti perfetti c'è molto, molto di più.
C'è innanzitutto una regia perfetta, quella del giovane Chazelle che alla seconda avventura sul grande schermo si conferma regista da Walk of fame. Il suo amore per la settima arte è palapabile e La La La Land è soprattutto un tributo al cinema in quanto raccoglitore di sogni e di energia. La perfezione tecnica si cela dietro ogni inquadratura, la simmetria della fotografia, i suoi movimenti di macchina puliti e raffinati sono una gioia per gli occhi. Il piano sequenza con cui apre il film è già storia del cinema. 4 minuti roboanti, velocissimi e di una difficolta inaudita vi potranno dare la percezione di quanto questo cineasta ci sappia fare dietro la macchina da presa. Si narra che abbia impiegato 3 mesi a girare il piano sequenza di cui parlo.
Gosling and Stone's alchemy is something rarely seen on screens. The couple manages to be tender but firm, dreamer but concrete, in love but selfish in the best sense of the word. On their determination, Chazelle aims a lot and the couple of actors returns a double Oscar performance, which Emma Stone will also be able to bring home in reality. The ending remains one of the most beautiful, unsettling and strong endings in the recent history of cinema. We were used to happy ending musicals or even too big ones. Here instead we have a bittersweet and very brave ending. Love is everything, it is what we all desperately seek. But love can also be towards oneself, towards one's profession, towards one's dreams. Everyone, in their own small way, will have had to sacrifice something for someone. No sensational gestures are needed, stifling choices to tangibly deprive yourself of something. Sometimes it is the healthy couple routine, the genuine desire to be together that makes us more flat, less brave, less decisive towards our dreams. So why, in the name of love, do not let go? Do not forget the other to focus on yourself? What's wrong with that? We live and come from a cynical and ruthless society that has nevertheless always tolerated those who have decided to let go of real affections in the name of their dreams. But isn't that love really after all?
L'alchimia di Gosling e Stone è qualcosa che si vede raramente sugli schermi. La coppia riesce ad essere tenera ma decisa, sognatrice ma concreta, innamorata ma egoista nel miglior senso del termine. Sulla loro grinta Chazelle punta molto e la coppia di attori restituisce una doppia performance da Oscar, che Emma Stone riuscirà anche a portare a casa nella realtà. Il finale resta uno dei finali più belli, spiazzanti e forti della storia recente del cinema. Eravamo abituati a musical da happy ending o di portata drammatica anche troppo grande. Qui invece abbiamo un finale dolceamaro e molto coraggioso. L'amore è tutto, è quello che tutti noi cerchiamo disperatamente. Ma l'amore può essere anche verso se stessi, verso la propria professione, verso i propri sogni. A tutti, nel proprio piccolo, sarà capitato di dover sacrificare qualcosa per qualcuno. Non servono gesti eclatanti, scelte soffocanti per privarsi tangibilmente di qualcosa. A volte è la sana routine di coppia, la genuina voglia di stare insieme a renderci più piatti, meno coraggiosi, meno determinanti verso i nostri sogni. E allora perchè, in nome dell'amore, non lasciarsi andare? Non dimenticarsi dell'altro per concentrarsi su se stessi? Cosa ci sarebbe di male? Viviamo e veniamo da una società cinica e spietata che tuttavia ha sempre maltollerato chi ha deciso di lasciare andare affetti veri in nome dei propri sogni. Ma in fondo non è anche quello amore?
