If I had to name the strangest and most indecipherable TV series of the last 2-3 years I would have no doubt: The OA.
The Netflix TV series after a debut unanimously appreciated but that hadn't allowed the series to stand out anyway came back with a second season that has abundantly tried to raise the bar both in technical and diegetic terms.
The Brit Marling series, which we remember is also the protagonist of the story, takes up the events of the second season but does so in a way of its own, completely detaching itself from that narrative, from that vein and taking us literally into another dimension.
We'll use entire episodes to understand where and how to place well-known and new characters, with some of them taking shape and substance only in the final episodes.
It's an interdimensional journey that tries to take us inside the meanders of our mind and into the recesses of our soul, making us wiggle in abstract movements through space-time membranes that become weaker and weaker.
Fascinating themes and absolutely valuable dialogues allow us to intensify our perception of the story as much as of ourselves.
We cross impassable limits and mix genres that are already unclassifiable in themselves.
Taking the pliers as a comparison, our thoughts immediately turn to the surreal and dreamlike works of David Lynch, the master of the seventh art who seems to be a point of reference in the stylistic and thematic approach of the series.
One goes up and down and often slips with unlucky choices and sometimes too long pauses, but the series, taken with due concentration, is metabolized with undeniable interest and charm in an attempt to try to understand something more by joining pieces of a puzzle that will never really be completed.
The OA confirms itself as an abstract creature, badly digestible by those seeking pure entertainment but a source of great mystery and virtuosity and as such a great magnet for those who want to try to find unique gems in a vast but sometimes repetitive television landscape.
The OA avoids standards and doesn't look for comparisons, it is unique even if it often gives Lynch some situations. A strange and disturbing series, to try and badly to archive.
Se dovessi indicare la serie tv più strana ed indecifrabile degli ultimi 2-3 anni non avrei dubbi: The OA.
La serie tv di Netflix dopo un debutto apprezzato unanimemente ma che non aveva comunque permesso alla serie di spiccare è tornata con una seconda stagione che ha abbondantemente provato ad alzare l'asticella sia in termini tecnici che in termini diegetici.
La serie di Brit Marling, che ricordiamo è anche la protagonista del racconto riprende dagli eventi della seconda stagione ma lo fa in un modo tutto suo, staccando completamente da quella narrazione, da quel filone e portandoci letteralmente in un'altra dimensione.
Impiegheremo interi episodi per capire dove e come collocare personaggi noti e personaggi nuovi, con alcuni di essi che prenderanno forma e sostanza solo negli episodi conclusivi.
E' un viaggio interdimensionale che prova a portarci dentro i meandri della nostra mente e negli incavi della nostra anima, facendoci dimenare in movimenti astratti attraverso membrane spazio temporali che si fanno via via più deboli.
Temi affascinanti e dialoghi assolutamente pregevoli ci permettono di intensificare la percezione del racconto quanto di noi stessi.
Si varcano limiti invalicabili e si mescolano generi già di per se inclassificabili.
Prendendo con le pinze il paragone il pensiero va immediatamente alle opere surreali e oniriche di David Lynch, il maestro della settima arte che pare essere punto di riferimento nell'approccio stilistico e tematico della serie.
Si sale e si scende e spesso si scivola con scelte poco fortunate e pause a volte troppo lunghe ma la serie, presa con la dovuta concentrazione viene metabolizzata con interesse e fascino innegabili nel tentativo di provare a capire qualcosa in più unendo tessere di un puzzle che non sarà mai realmente completato.
The OA si conferma creatura astratta, mal digeribile da chi cerca intrattenimento puro ma fonte di grande mistero e virtuosismo e come tale grande calamita per chi vuole provare a scovare chicche uniche in un panorama televisivo vastissimo ma a volte ripetitivo.
The OA rifugge gli standard e non cerca paragoni, è unica pur tributando spesso a Lynch alcune situazioni. Una serie strana e conturbante, da provare e mal che vada da archiviare.
