The OA is a mystery drama tv show that fuses science fiction and fantasy with supernatural and mythological concepts. The show was created and executive produced by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij and is their third collaboration.

"The OA" is not exactly a title I would want to give a series if I wanted it to trend. Just "The OA," and that's it? But then, click-bait could be a major turn-off sometimes, so I figured "let's not judge a series by its title just yet."
The series had me asking questions like "what's going on here?" and "what's going to happen next?" and especially, "how are they going to pull this off?" Because the whole story was so crazy that it compelled me to keep watching to find out how "this" or "that" happened and to see how it all played out.
How does a blind woman, who was reported missing seven years ago with no trails and no body found, reappear in her neighbourhood with the ability to see? Not with cutting-edge technology, but with the ability to see.
Well, all the suspense is part of filmmaking, but let's talk about how the series actually went. So without further ado, shall we?

The series is about a young woman, Prairie Johnson, who reappears after seven years of being reported missing and not been found until she shows up now. Upon her return, she calls herself "The OA" and can now see, as she had been known to be blind before her disappearance and has weird scars all over her body.
She refuses to report to the FBI and her adoptive parents, the Johnsons, where she has been all these seven years and how she got the scars and her sight back. But rather, she gathers a group of five people, four young boys and their school teacher, and tells them her out-of-this-world story to them.
Eventually, she seeks the help of the group of five people she gathered to help save other missing people from where she had escaped from—where she had been all the years. She claims she can help them by opening a portal to another dimension.
She teaches them some movements that perform miracles and can jump a person through dimensions.
The movements
As her story unfolds, the group struggles with unbelief as she shares her story alongside their individual problems in their lives. Prairie's parents have hard time dealing with her mystery and new behaviours.

Prairie jumps to another dimension, and it wasn't as she could have anticipated. In the new dimension, she continues to find her captor and her fellow captives as she believed them to have jumped as well.
She meets new faces, such as Karim, a private investigator, and helps out in the search for a missing lady who mysteriously disappears.

Meanwhile, the OA's companions in her original dimension go through difficult events as they try to help her.
As Prairie knows and understands more of her calling as the OA, the Original Angel, so does her captor, and he uses the knowledge for his selfish research that endangers lives.
𝕄𝕐 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊 & 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ𝕊
At first, I thought that the series was going to be centred on just how she got her sight as it was taking quite a while for that to be revealed. But as the story rolled out, I began to see that there was way more to her story than just how she received her sight. Her past was something and all that was before her (her calling), was no small deal. The whole series would have been whack if it had just been about her sight.
The series may need some patience as the story unfolds for one to enjoy it; the first few episodes are not that exciting. A lot of attention to details is important to fully understand the concepts it portrays.
The series is basically based upon the theories of NDEs (Near Death Experiences): what happens after death? What and where is the afterlife? What happens to the body and mind at the point of death? and stuff like that. It is not that I am a fan of mythological and supernatural theories and concepts, but it was refreshing to learn about such explorations.
Now, let's talk about some specifics of the movie:
- Storyline
The story vividly depicts the lengths to which man will go to acquire delicate knowledge, particularly knowledge that can grant some form of power and control over some natural phenomena.The captor, Hap, was a perfect example of how well portrayed this was. It did quite well to mix science fiction and supernatural things such as interdimensional travel and angels.
Consistency is not something that was left off. There was not a point where I felt they were drifting from what I took to be the story; there was always a connection. Prairie's past was told, and it showed just how everything started.
Some may find some things a bit too spiritual, but all the ideas were quite okay, not like they referred to any particular religion.
In my humble opinion, this aspect was just okay. What I mean to say is that there were not particularly fantastic visual effects or spectacular camera moments that I could particularly think of. I am not trying to imply that they did a bad job with the cinematography; they are not just the ones you would be like "wow, that's cool." And it makes sense to make the series that way, as it makes the series feel more natural.
A movie can be good for its stories and aesthetics, but can never come to life without the actors. Before I get to the big guns, let me mention the boys to you.
I don't know if they actually played as themselves, or if they had been preparing for their roles since forever, but they absolutely nailed it.
The only thing that confused me throughout the movie was the character Buck Vu; I did not fully understand if he was a boy or a girl (or maybe I did not just pay attention to the series well enough for that character). I looked the actor up and figured that he was actually a guy that was playing a transgender role.
And as for the show's stars, Brit (Prairie), yes, the creator herself, and Jacob (Hap, the villain), their acting was out of this world. I really do not think there would have been better people for those roles.
Finally, the movements used throughout the series had to be learned and executed flawlessly. Otherwise, the movements may not have looked great as they were done in sync with two or more people.
𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊...
The series was supposed to run for five seasons on Netflix, but Netflix cancelled the show after season two. It is unknown why Netflix cancelled a show that was doing well already and was just in its early stages.
I had no idea that the series was cancelled before starting the series, but either way, I would have still seen it as I have done so.
The series, despite being canceled, found its way to the top. And it is needless to say that it could have continued to do well if it had been given that chance.
I'd give the series an 8/10.

"The OA" no es exactamente un título que me gustaría darle a una serie si quisiera que sólo fuera "The OA", ¿y ya está? Pero entonces, el click-bait puede ser un gran rechazo a veces, así que pensé "no juzguemos una serie por su título todavía".
La serie me hizo preguntarme cosas como "¿qué está pasando aquí?" y "¿qué va a pasar después?" y sobre todo, "¿cómo van a sacar esto adelante?". Porque toda la historia era tan disparatada que me obligaba a seguir viendo para saber cómo pasaba "esto" o "aquello" y ver cómo se desarrollaba todo.
¿Cómo una mujer ciega, que fue denunciada como desaparecida hace siete años sin rastros ni cuerpo encontrado, reaparece en su barrio con la capacidad de ver? No con tecnología punta, sino con la capacidad de ver.

Al principio, pensé que la serie se iba a centrar sólo en cómo obtuvo la vista, ya que tardaba bastante en revelarse. Pero a medida que la historia se desarrollaba, empecé a ver que había mucho más en su historia que la forma en que recibió la vista. Su pasado era algo y todo lo que tenía delante (su vocación), no era poca cosa. Toda la serie habría estado mal si sólo se hubiera tratado de su vista.
Para disfrutar de la serie es necesario tener un poco de paciencia a medida que se desarrolla la historia; los primeros episodios no son tan emocionantes. Es importante prestar mucha atención a los detalles para comprender plenamente los conceptos que retrata.
La serie se basa básicamente en las teorías de las ECM (Experiencias Cercanas a la Muerte): ¿qué ocurre después de la muerte? ¿Qué y dónde está el más allá? ¿Qué ocurre con el cuerpo y la mente en el momento de la muerte? y cosas por el estilo. No es que sea un fanático de las teorías y conceptos mitológicos y sobrenaturales, pero fue refrescante conocer tales exploraciones.
Ahora, hablemos de algunos detalles de la película:
- Storyline
La historia describe vívidamente los extremos a los que llega el hombre para adquirir conocimientos delicados, en particular los que pueden otorgar alguna forma de poder y control sobre algunos fenómenos naturales.El captor, Hap, era un ejemplo perfecto de lo bien retratado que estaba esto. Hizo bastante bien en mezclar la ciencia ficción con cosas sobrenaturales como los viajes interdimensionales y los ángeles.
La coherencia no es algo que se haya dejado de lado. No hubo un punto en el que sintiera que se desviaban de lo que yo consideraba la historia; siempre hubo una conexión. Se contó el pasado de Prairie y se mostró cómo empezó todo.
Algunos pueden encontrar algunas cosas un poco demasiado espirituales, pero todas las ideas estaban bastante bien, no es que hicieran referencia a ninguna religión en particular.
En mi humilde opinión, este aspecto estuvo simplemente bien. Lo que quiero decir es que no hubo efectos visuales especialmente fantásticos ni momentos de cámara espectaculares que se me ocurrieran. No estoy tratando de insinuar que hayan hecho un mal trabajo con la cinematografía; no son sólo los que te quedarían como "wow, eso es genial". Y tiene sentido hacer la serie así, ya que hace que la serie parezca más natural.
Una película puede ser buena por sus historias y su estética, pero nunca puede cobrar vida sin los actores. Antes de pasar a los grandes, permítanme mencionar a los chicos. No sé si realmente actuaron como ellos mismos, o si llevaban preparándose para sus papeles desde siempre, pero lo clavaron absolutamente.
Lo único que me confundió a lo largo de la película fue el personaje de Buck Vu; no entendí del todo si era un chico o una chica (o quizá es que no presté la suficiente atención a la serie para ese personaje). Busqué al actor y supuse que en realidad era un chico que interpretaba un papel transgénero.
Y en cuanto a las estrellas de la serie, Brit (Prairie), sí, la propia creadora, y Jacob (Hap, el villano), su actuación era de otro mundo. Realmente no creo que hubiera habido personas mejores para esos papeles. Por último, los movimientos utilizados a lo largo de la serie debían aprenderse y ejecutarse a la perfección. De lo contrario, los movimientos no habrían quedado muy bien, ya que se hacían en sincronía con dos o más personas.
ℝ𝔼𝔽𝕃𝔼𝕏𝕀𝕆ℕ𝔼𝕊 𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃𝔼𝕊...
La serie iba a durar cinco temporadas en Netflix, pero ésta la canceló tras la segunda temporada. No se sabe por qué Netflix canceló una serie que ya iba bien y que apenas estaba en sus inicios.
Yo no tenía ni idea de que la serie había sido cancelada antes de empezar la serie, pero de cualquier manera, la hubiera seguido viendo como lo he hecho.
La serie, a pesar de haber sido cancelada, encontró su camino hacia la cima. Y no hace falta decir que podría haber seguido haciéndolo bien si se le hubiera dado esa oportunidad.
Yo le daría a la serie un 8/10.
