🎬 📹 Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 🎬 📹

Natural disasters can reveal the best and worst of humanity; in a matter of seconds, everything can change forever. There is an anime that explores precisely this: *Tokyo Magnitude 8.0* tells the story of Mirai, a teenager deeply frustrated with her family life. Her relationship with her parents is far from pleasant for her—and even less so for her brother, Yuuki. The two embark on a trip to the artificial island of Odaiba as part of a school excursion; it is during this journey that a magnitude 8.0 earthquake strikes the Japanese capital, plunging the city into total chaos.

Mirai and her brother embark on a journey back to the city to reunite with their parents, but the road is chaotic, making it incredibly difficult for them to get home. This is where Mari, a delivery woman who also needs to get home to her daughter, comes in. She decides to help the siblings reach the city. This is essentially the dynamic of the story, told in just 11 episodes. The ending is quite heartbreaking, sad, and somewhat emotional (I can't give you any spoilers 🥹).

I give this series a 10/10. Firstly, because the studio went to great lengths to make everything as realistic as possible, basing it on data, simulations, research, rescues, fires, seismology, and collective psychology regarding people's responses to natural disasters. In this way, they managed to make the desperation it conveys 100% real. Secondly, because of the excellent character development for Mirai and her brother. From episode 4 onwards, we can see that she matures through sheer force of will, and the disaster teaches her a clear lesson. And thirdly, because it leaves a deeply moving reflection that breaks your heart...

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is not just a drama, action, and disaster anime; it shows the harshest aspects of society when it's affected by nature, and how people can change radically after experiencing such an event. The ending wasn't the best, but it was the most realistic for this type of situation. The biggest lesson I take away is to love your loved ones, to love life, and to appreciate it even on bad days, because you never know when the earth will shake beneath your feet and, with it, shake your entire world.
