Adventure has always been one of my favorite genres in movies. Although cliché, I love the concept of archeology, lost treasure, booby traps and the struggle for unimaginable fortune or recognition. This is why The Lost City quickly became a movie I wanted to see once it was released. Despite having tons of movies written down under "Movies I want to see" in my notes app, I pushed this one a little bit high so that I won't see or hear of any spoilers like the case with Uncharted.

Sadly, in spite of all the hype I made up in my head around this movie, there was really not a lot of hype around it in the real world. I don't think I heard anyone around me mention this movie and I didn't see much of it on twitter. I guess that with nobody really talking about it I forgot about it or got uninterested. Checking my notes app some days back, I saw the name again and decided to finally check it out.

Well, if you haven't heard of this movie yet, it's my pleasure to introduce it to you. If you've heard of it but haven't seen it yet, keep reading so you can have a good idea of what to expect. If you have seen it, then just read on to know if my thoughts align with yours and also tell me what you think. All in all, stick around for the review of the new Paramount Pictures' adventure and action thriller, The Lost City.

When this movie starts I expected it to be kind of like Jumanji. The movie opens up with a scene in some ancient ruins that turns out to be a scene from a book. With that, I thought that the adventures in this movie would take place in a book or something like that but things started to get real eventually.

The story is about an award winning author, Loretta Sage, who lives a mundane and solitary life after the death of her husband. Although made successful by her "Angela Lovemore" novels, her franchise suffers as she is clearly unstable and struggles with her creative side. Loretta clearly feels pressured by her team and fans to write a good story in her new novel but she is really uninterested and wants to be left alone.

The fate of the Lovemore franchise hangs by a thread held by the fans' love and admiration for the novels' cover model, Alan. Alan, who is the model for Dash in the novels, is a typical charismatic, selfless and, of course, handsome ladies' man that is constantly getting asked to "rip his shirt off".

When Loretta is kidnapped by the deranged billionaire, Fairfax, she is forced to decipher the location of an ancient treasure relating to the context in her novels. Alan sees Lorreta being kidnapped and sets out to rescue her. When the pair reunite on an island in the Atlantic, they have to set aside their differences if they wish to escape. Things don't go as planned and so Loretta and Alan find themselves on an adventure similar to the novels as they try to recover The Crown of Fire.

Will Loretta and Alan be able to recover the so called Crown of Fire? Will they escape the dreaded island alive? What mysteries await this unlikely pair of amateur adventurers? Go ahead and check out the movie to find out!

I have to say this movie is really something special. For starters, it's nice to see an adventure movie that Dwayne Johnson didn't star in or one with people on Khakis surrounded by nothing but trees and vines. In this movie, we don't see the occasional booby traps that has become very common with adventure movies of this nature. Even the treasure in the end is not what anyone would have expected. I really like the fact that the producers of this movie really tried to make the plot different from what we have become accustomed to.

Apart from the unique plot, here are other things I find interesting about this movie;

1. Fast Jokes and awesome word play:

I think comedy is a very important element in film making. I don't want to overly emphasize this but I feel like you need to have a very healthy sarcastic sense to really enjoy this movie. There are a lot of jokes that are too fast which I don't think a lot of people would pick up quickly. There are also, of course, some sexual references that might just be quick for some people to get.

Also, the wordplay in this movie is just really good. You can never know what a character would say next. They just keep you guessing but again you have to be kind of fast to understand some of them.

I watched this movie with a friend and sometimes when I chuckled or laughed I had to pause the movie and ask "Did you get it?" I had to explain some of the jokes to her or rewind so she can hear them. She got some of them quickly but was just too slow for others. This is why I think some people might be too slow (no offense) to understand certain jokes in this movie.

2. Somewhat underrated actors:

How many times have we seen "top notch" actors star in hugely anticipated movie to just totally mess it up? It's really sad and painful to watch.

In my opinion, The Lost City features some really cool actors who, if we think about of, are kind of underrated. These actors brought a new feel to the seemingly generic adventure genre and were fun to watch. The fact we don't see some of them very often in a lot hyped movies makes this movie even more interesting because we don't know what to expect from them. Except for the fact that they played their part well, these people really blended well with one another giving this movie the harmony that it needed to not be a pain in the eyes like Red Notice was.

3. Great special effects and stunts:

Yes and yes on this part. The special effects used in this movie really made it worth the time. For example, when Loretta is rescued initially, there are a series of explosions that no one expects that are just really good. Together with the soundtrack used, that scene was pretty awesome if you ask me. As the movie progresses, you will notice other cool effects and stunts pulled off my the actors that really immerse you in the action.

4. The good guys were a little too lucky:

In the beginning of this movie, we can see that the billionaire villain, Fairfax, has a lot of henchmen. With so much manpower, you'd expect these guys to really be a threat but you would be quickly disappointed. Except for two henchmen who were outsmarted by the good guys and killed, there is no proper explanation for what happened to the rest of the henchmen. During some confrontations, we see the henchmen dominating the good guys but something happens and boom, the good guys win. In the end, there were only two henchmen left when the biggest threat of them all misses a step and falls to his death. Just like that. When it's all said and done, Fairfax is left alone standing on the shores with an empty gun. There is really no explanation for what happened to the rest of his henchmen.

I appreciate the fact that movie makers always try to give the good guys a chance to win but I just can't help but feel that the protagonists in this movie were too lucky. Unlike your regular tough guy adventurer, these guys really didn't have the skillset to outmatch anyone especially not mercenaries hired by a billionaire but somehow, they survived. It almost felt like the universe or some force was on their side. I feel like there should have been a greater challenge for the protagonists and other elements should have been used to aid them in their journey because with so much luck on the good guys' side, the movie just feels weird.

5. There are things we just can't change:

In the beginning of this movie, we are made to understand that Loretta Sage is deeply affected by the tremendous loss of her husband. She doesn't like to face the world and so she coops herself up indoors all day. In Alan's words, "you're so afraid of life hurting you again that you've stopped living." She is clearly grieving and this really affects her franchise and relationship with others. When her life takes an unexpected turn, she begins to appreciate her life more and her personality becomes a little bit better.

Loss is something that is never really planned for and everyone is affected by it in different ways. A profound loss is always very devastating and can affect every aspect of our lives. Sometimes we blame ourselves and wish we could change the past. We play different scenarios in our head of what we could have done differently to prevent the loss and this has nothing but negative effects on our lives.

The Lost City teaches us to let go of the past and live. It is important we acknowledge what has happened in the past but we should learn to keep living. Instead of worrying about things we cannot change, we should appreciate life as we have it and plan for a better future. Of course, grief never really ends but we should never let it keep us down.

6. The post credit surprise:

I don't think I can say a lot about this without spoiling the movie. Just go check it out!

Sandra Bullock plays the role of Loretta Sage, the best-selling author. Loretta is a very intelligent woman whose expertise in archeology and history is key for uncovering an ancient lost treasure. Her personality is kind of cold in the beginning. She is basically uninterested in life after the death of her husband. When she gets kidnapped, she doesn’t appear very scared rather she is kind of demanding. Her character forms a conflict in the viewer because sometimes she is annoying but then you sympathize with the fact that she is grieving. Loretta is famous in my head for using the euphemism “Cheese and Rice”.

The “hero” of the day, Alan, is played by Channing Tatum. Alan is the ever-caring star of Loretta’s novels. He is very charismatic and a little goofy. He isn’t as bright as Loretta but has a brighter personality than hers. Although Alan has no special combat training, he sets out to rescue Loretta (who he clearly has a crush on) when she is kidnapped. His bravery helps him take risks and eventually his bubbly personality grows on Loretta. Alan is a good change to the tough guy G.I. Joe character we all know and love Tatum for.

I don’t think I’ve seen Daniel Radcliffe play a villain character before but the Harry Potter star does just that in The Lost City. He plays the character of Abigail Fairfax, the deranged billionaire obsessed with finding The crown of fire. Fairfax is a very unstable narcissist. He is very insensitive and cares about nobody but himself. If you think Loretta is cold just wait until you see this guy. He really doesn’t care who dies in the quest to get what he wants.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph plays the role of Beth, Loretta’s publisher. Beth is your typical boss lady. She is the type of person that takes charge when no one else wants to do anything. You have to admire her determination. She does everything she can and spends money and time just to rescue Loretta and Alan. She is very persuasive and doesn’t let anything stop her from doing what she has to do. I think her character is my favorite.

Brad Pitt plays the role of a trainer called Jack Trainer. Unlike Alan, Jack is an actual adventurer and mercenary. I really don’t know how to describe his personality. I’d say he is pretty confident and rightfully so. His skills in combat are really good as none of Fairfax’s men are able to match him. He is so good that Alan feels intimidated by him.

Patti Harrison plays the character of Allison. Allison is Loretta’s social media manager who is obsessed with Shawn Mendes for some weird reason. Allison is just the really chill person that can’t get anyone mad. Still, she always finds a way to say the worst things at the wrong time.

If you’re looking for an adventure movie that isn’t so generic, then you should definitely check out The Lost City. Take the challenge and see if you’re fast enough to understand the jokes. In my opinion, I think the movie is good. Even though I finished it in two sittings, it was worth the time.

La aventura siempre ha sido uno de mis géneros favoritos en las películas. Aunque es un cliché, me encanta el concepto de arqueología, el tesoro perdido, las trampas explosivas y la lucha por una fortuna o un reconocimiento inimaginables. Es por eso que The Lost City se convirtió rápidamente en una película que quería ver una vez que se estrenó. A pesar de tener toneladas de películas escritas en "Películas que quiero ver" en mi aplicación de notas, presioné esta un poco más alto para que no vea ni escuche ningún spoiler como el caso de Uncharted.

Lamentablemente, a pesar de todo el bombo que inventé en mi cabeza en torno a esta película, en realidad no había mucho bombo en el mundo real. No creo haber escuchado a nadie a mi alrededor mencionar esta película y no la vi mucho en Twitter. Supongo que sin que nadie hablara realmente de eso, me olvidé o desinteresé. Revisando mi aplicación de notas hace unos días, vi el nombre nuevamente y decidí finalmente revisarlo.

Bueno, si aún no has oído hablar de esta película, es un placer presentártela. Si ha oído hablar de él pero aún no lo ha visto, siga leyendo para que pueda tener una buena idea de qué esperar. Si lo has visto, sigue leyendo para saber si mis pensamientos se alinean con los tuyos y también dime lo que piensas. En general, quédese para ver la reseña del nuevo thriller de acción y aventuras de Paramount Pictures, La ciudad perdida.

Cuando esta película comienza, esperaba que fuera algo así como Jumanji. La película comienza con una escena en unas ruinas antiguas que resulta ser una escena de un libro. Con eso, pensé que las aventuras de esta película tendrían lugar en un libro o algo así, pero las cosas comenzaron a volverse reales con el tiempo.

Aunque tuvo éxito con sus novelas de "Angela Lovemore", su franquicia sufre porque es claramente inestable y lucha con su lado creativo. Tengo que decir que esta película es realmente algo especial. Para empezar, es bueno ver una película de aventuras en la que Dwayne Johnson no protagonizó o una con personas en Khakis rodeadas de nada más que árboles y enredaderas. En esta película, no vemos las trampas explosivas ocasionales que se han vuelto muy comunes en las películas de aventuras de esta naturaleza. Incluso el tesoro al final no es lo que nadie hubiera esperado. Realmente me gusta el hecho de que los productores de esta película realmente intentaron hacer que la trama fuera diferente a lo que nos hemos acostumbrado.

Además de la trama única, aquí hay otras cosas que encuentro interesantes sobre esta película;

1. Chistes rápidos y juegos de palabras impresionantes:

Creo que la comedia es un elemento muy importante en la realización de películas. No quiero enfatizar demasiado esto, pero siento que necesitas tener un sentido sarcástico muy saludable para disfrutar realmente esta película. Hay muchos chistes que son demasiado rápidos y que no creo que mucha gente capte rápidamente. También hay, por supuesto, algunas referencias sexuales que pueden ser fáciles de entender para algunas personas.

Además, el juego de palabras en esta película es realmente bueno. Nunca se puede saber qué diría un personaje a continuación. Simplemente te mantienen adivinando, pero nuevamente tienes que ser un poco rápido para entender algunos de ellos.

Vi esta película con un amigo y, a veces, cuando me reía o me reía, tenía que pausar la película y preguntar "¿Lo entendiste?". Tuve que explicarle algunos de los chistes o rebobinarlos para que pudiera escucharlos. Obtuvo algunos de ellos rápidamente, pero fue demasiado lento para otros. 2. Actores algo subestimados:

¿Cuántas veces hemos visto a actores de "primera categoría" protagonizar una película muy esperada para arruinarla por completo? Es realmente triste y doloroso de ver.

En mi opinión, The Lost City presenta a algunos actores realmente geniales que, si pensamos en ellos, están un poco subestimados. Estos actores aportaron una nueva sensación al género de aventuras aparentemente genérico y fueron divertidos de ver. El hecho de que no veamos a algunos de ellos muy a menudo en muchas películas promocionadas hace que esta película sea aún más interesante porque no sabemos qué esperar de ellos. Excepto por el hecho de que desempeñaron bien su papel, estas personas realmente se combinaron bien entre sí, lo que le dio a esta película la armonía que necesitaba para no ser un dolor en los ojos como lo fue Red Notice.

3. Grandes efectos especiales y acrobacias:

Sí y sí en esta parte. Los efectos especiales utilizados en esta película realmente hicieron que valiera la pena. Por ejemplo, cuando Loretta es rescatada inicialmente, hay una serie de explosiones que nadie espera que sean realmente buenas. Junto con la banda sonora utilizada, esa escena fue bastante impresionante si me preguntas. A medida que avanza la película, notará otros efectos geniales y acrobacias realizadas por los actores que realmente lo sumergen en la acción.

**4. Los buenos tuvieron un poco de suerte: **

Al comienzo de esta película, podemos ver que el villano multimillonario, Fairfax, tiene muchos secuaces. Con tanta mano de obra, uno esperaría que estos muchachos fueran realmente una amenaza, pero rápidamente se sentiría decepcionado. A excepción de dos secuaces que fueron burlados por los buenos y asesinados, no hay una explicación adecuada de lo que les sucedió al resto de los secuaces. Durante algunos enfrentamientos, vemos a los secuaces dominando a los buenos, pero algo sucede y boom, los buenos ganan. Al final, solo quedaban dos secuaces cuando la mayor amenaza de todos pierde un paso y cae y muere. Así. Cuando todo está dicho y hecho, Fairfax se queda solo en la orilla con un arma vacía. Realmente no hay explicación para lo que pasó con el resto de sus secuaces.

Aprecio el hecho de que los cineastas siempre traten de darles a los buenos la oportunidad de ganar, pero no puedo evitar sentir que los protagonistas de esta película tuvieron demasiada suerte. A diferencia de los aventureros rudos habituales, estos tipos realmente no tenían el conjunto de habilidades para superar a nadie, especialmente a los mercenarios contratados por un multimillonario, pero de alguna manera sobrevivieron. Casi se sentía como si el universo o alguna fuerza estuviera de su lado. Siento que debería haber habido un desafío mayor para los protagonistas y que se deberían haber usado otros elementos para ayudarlos en su viaje porque con tanta suerte del lado de los buenos, la película se siente rara.

5. Hay cosas que simplemente no podemos cambiar:

Al comienzo de esta película, se nos hace entender que Loretta Sage está profundamente afectada por la tremenda pérdida de su esposo. No le gusta enfrentarse al mundo y por eso se encierra en casa todo el día. En palabras de Alan, "tienes tanto miedo de que la vida te vuelva a lastimar que has dejado de vivir". Claramente está de duelo y esto realmente afecta su franquicia y su relación con los demás. Cuando su vida da un giro inesperado, comienza a apreciar más su vida y su personalidad mejora un poco.

La pérdida es algo que nunca se planea realmente y todos se ven afectados por ella de diferentes maneras. Una pérdida profunda siempre es muy devastadora y puede afectar todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas. A veces nos culpamos a nosotros mismos y deseamos poder cambiar el pasado. Jugamos diferentes escenarios en nuestra cabeza de lo que podríamos haber hecho de manera diferente para evitar la pérdida y esto no tiene más que efectos negativos en nuestras vidas.

La ciudad perdida nos enseña a dejar atrás el pasado y vivir. Es importante que reconozcamos lo que ha sucedido en el pasado, pero debemos aprender a seguir viviendo. En lugar de preocuparnos por las cosas que no podemos cambiar, debemos apreciar la vida tal como la tenemos y planificar un futuro mejor. Por supuesto, el dolor nunca termina realmente, pero nunca debemos dejar que nos deprima.

6. La sorpresa posterior al crédito:

No creo que pueda decir mucho sobre esto sin estropear la película. ¡Solo ve y échale un vistazo!

Sandra Bullock interpreta el papel de Loretta Sage, la autora más vendida. Loretta es una mujer muy inteligente cuya experiencia en arqueología e historia es clave para descubrir un antiguo tesoro perdido. Su personalidad es un poco fría al principio. Ella básicamente no está interesada en la vida después de la muerte de su esposo. Cuando la secuestran, no parece muy asustada, sino más bien exigente. Su personaje crea un conflicto en el espectador porque a veces es molesta pero luego te solidarizas con el hecho de que está de duelo. Loretta es famosa en mi cabeza por usar el eufemismo “Cheese and Rice”.

El "héroe" del día, Alan, es interpretado por Channing Tatum. Alan es la estrella siempre cariñosa de las novelas de Loretta. Es muy carismático y un poco tonto. No es tan brillante como Loretta pero tiene una personalidad más brillante que la de ella. Aunque Alan no tiene un entrenamiento de combate especial, se dispone a rescatar a Loretta (de quien claramente está enamorado) cuando la secuestran. Su valentía lo ayuda a tomar riesgos y eventualmente su personalidad burbujeante crece en Loretta. Alan es un buen cambio para el tipo duro G.I. Realmente no le importa quién muere en la búsqueda para conseguir lo que quiere.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph interpreta el papel de Beth, la editora de Loretta. Beth es la típica jefa. Ella es el tipo de persona que se hace cargo cuando nadie más quiere hacer nada. Hay que admirar su determinación. Ella hace todo lo que puede y gasta dinero y tiempo solo para rescatar a Loretta y Alan. Es muy persuasiva y no deja que nada le impida hacer lo que tiene que hacer. Creo que su personaje es mi favorito.

Brad Pitt interpreta el papel de un entrenador llamado Jack Trainer. A diferencia de Alan, Jack es un verdadero aventurero y mercenario. Realmente no sé cómo describir su personalidad. Yo diría que tiene bastante confianza y con razón. Sus habilidades en combate son realmente buenas ya que ninguno de los hombres de Fairfax puede igualarlo. Es tan bueno que Alan se siente intimidado por él.

Patti Harrison interpreta el personaje de Allison. Allison es la administradora de redes sociales de Loretta que está obsesionada con Shawn Mendes por alguna extraña razón. Allison es la persona realmente relajada que no puede enojar a nadie. Aún así, ella siempre encuentra la manera de decir las peores cosas en el momento equivocado.

Si está buscando una película de aventuras que no sea tan genérica, definitivamente debería ver The Lost City. Acepta el desafío y comprueba si eres lo suficientemente rápido para entender los chistes. En mi opinión, creo que la película es buena. Aunque lo terminé en dos sesiones, valió la pena.
