Gattaca is probably one of those movies you missed and didn't even know it. It came out in 1997 and didn't do well in the theaters and only became popular after. The movie from what I can see on Wikipedia has somewhat of a cult following.
The movie stars Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law and has an impressive 7.8 rating on IMBd. As I have mentioned in the past, I generally find anything rated 6.0+ as good and 7.0+ as great. 8.0-9.0+ is extremely rare on IMDb.
Gattaca is a movie about elitism where only the genetically perfect qualify for the coveted space program. Only the best of the top 1% even qualify and it is based completely on genetics. From birth, your death date and what diseases you will develop are predicted with uncanny accuracy due to advancements in technology.
In this world, they even go so far to hire genetic engineers to manipulate the genetics of your offspring to virtually guarantee a perfectly healthy child with a long lifespan. These are the elite few that are able to try out for the space program.
Jude Law (Jerome) is amazing as usual, is a genetically perfect human being and considered among the elite. While Ethan Hawke (Vincent) is considered an in-valid due to natural birth and his natural defects. Vincent though has the drive and passion to rival even the most perfect of the elite, something that could never be determined or manipulated by genetics.
Jude Law's character is paralyzed in a car accident and will never be able to qualify for the space program not to mention much of anything. He still carries DNA of a perfect valid person.
Jerome and Vincent create an arrangement where Jerome will supply Vincent with samples from his body (blood, piss, skin, hair and so on) to allow Vincent to try out for the space program. Due to the technology and extremism found in this world, this is an extremely difficult and time-consuming process.
Gattaca was written and directed by Andrew Niccol and was his first release as a director.
