I know, everybody is talking about this movie, and I hate jumping into a trend, always did, I was like the girls in the movie but the opposite haha, I was an otaku when people in my school knew just Dragon Ball. But, since there are so many cool reviews already, I want to talk about the unexpected (for me) effect that this movie had on some of my male friends.

As a woman myself, and a former otaku and k-poper, I tell you, this movie is 100% real no fake, all the cringe, all the obsession for a band, in my case I was a fan of a girl band, the looking for money to go, everything was just on point. Turning into a red panda... just kidding haha. The reference to teen years is great, even the fact that cute girls are not natural enemies to weird girls, they all were just kids in this movie.

What brought the debate on my Facebook account was the references to menstruation. As @aletoalonewolf said in his post this was one of the few movies to talk about this topic, and it's still a taboo, mostly for males who never experience that (even tho they are surrounded by girls), but let's stop a second in this: They are not taught it in school, but girls aren't either, we go to the same schools and we only know about this topic because we experience it, it has been such a taboo that a lot of girls won't talk about it with each other, let alone with family, that's embarrassing, right?
The only direct reference this movie has about menstruation is when the mother thinks that's what's going on with her daughter, so she offers her a lot of products for it, pads, painkillers, a hot water bag, pretty innocent.

Well, since I saw a lot of controversy on Facebook before watching this movie after I saw it and never found the source of all the excitement, I asked on one post "What was all the controversy about?"
This is one of the answers with its follow up
Him: I agree, although, from a male point of view, the subject is a bit uncomfortable 😅 nevertheless, I found it a really very interesting movie.
Me: What part is uncomfortable? I ask seriously because I want to know because I saw it wanting to understand why so much fuss and in the end, I didn't find anything so relevant.
Him: It is that, and here I will speak for me, the subject of menstruation makes us uncomfortable, I know several (men) with the same point in common, but it is no more because we do not live it and it tends to be a bit grotesque, and to me in particular, exposing these situations, even if it has been very well done, still seems a bit uncomfortable .... I don't know if I'm explaining myself clearly 😛
But what I found very interesting is how they approach the sexual and/or hormonal awakening and how it is evidenced through the emotions
So, just the mention of it was grotesque for him. I have to say, we, as women, hear about male puberty all the time, and the topic is addressed in a lot of movies like something normal, but menstruation isn't, and when it appears, it's either in a grotesque way or in an educational production, not as something that just happens (to half of the population). I understand that boys are uneducated on this topic, so the conversation continued like this:
Me: Ah, then it is very good that they did it hahaha, and hopefully they will continue to do it, because at this point menstruation should not be something that is grotesque, little known perhaps, because boys do not experience it, but not grotesque, and less when they only showed boxes of products, nothing else, and the rest was nothing literal. Sadly, I have met women who can't even talk about it freely because of the taboo, while when it comes to purely masculine things, they are treated normally, as if they were the default, and there are even women who talk about it more comfortably than their own things.
Him: I agree with the idea that it should be something that should be treated naturally, even so, remember that human beings reject what they can't understand in most cases.
Clearly our society is moving forward with those parameters, but it will remain that rejection for a while longer, even I don't even think I myself can stop feeling uncomfortable 😅 but I haven't denied them to express themselves about it either.... Because curiously I have more female friends than male friends 🙃.

Even when I'm explaining that at this point it should not be grotesque and I expect more education about it, he asks me to remember that human rejects what they can't understand. But this is not witchcraft or aliens, this is something easily understandable. Male can understand soccer even when most of them have never actually played it, so even when not experiencing it means you can't get what cramps are like nor the feeling of the blood coming out, it doesn't mean you can't understand process itself.
The cherry on top was "I haven't denied them to express themselves about it either" well thanks man, you are not in the right to deny it, tho.

So this one-minute scene was 90% of what I was reading online, not even a real talk, just a literal misunderstanding because that wasn't the case, the rest was a very metaphorical approach to (female) puberty.

We definitely need more of this. I'm a person who loves watching more fantasy than reality, but this conversation I had and all the fuss it caused shows that there is not enough reality on tv.
How come we can talk about farts, poo, pee, boogers, rotten food and corpses, actual disgusting stuff on tv but some boxes of pads are "uncomfortable" and "grotesque"?
Boys, it's not your fault not knowing yet something no one has told you, however, it is your responsibility to listen when girls express their thoughts about it, it's not girls' responsibility to understand that it's uncomfortable for you, because, I have news, it's way more uncomfortable to have it that to hear about it.

With this honest portrait of the beginning of adolescence, Pixar caused a lot of waves, bigger than the movie itself, which I actually found very straightforward, with no side stories or complicated out-comings, the hour and a half felt very short and easy-going. Probably the most complicated thing is the animation itself, not only on the technical aspect but in the emotional aspect of bringing to life these sassy yet clumsy girls, I couldn't stop laughing at he fact that they actually look like some of my friends when we were teeagers, even today. Yes, we wore fluffy cat ears and tails, not, I'm not kidding.
