Have you heard about the TV series named Devs, directed by Alex Garland? Probably not! It has entered the world in a quite silent way. It is produced by FX Network in the United States, and in cooperation with the streaming service Hulu, it has reached the world. But, Hulu is still a limited streaming service, and other TV networks and streaming services haven't gotten hold of the series yet. But, if you have the chance of streaming Devs somewhere, go ahead, it is a real treat!
Alex Garland is also the guy behind Ex Machina. In other words, you will find some similarities with the movie in this series. If you haven't seen Ex Machina either, time to get started!
First of all, Devs only consists of eight episodes, and no second season is planned. That is refreshing. You can expect the story to end, which gives hope and joy throughout the entire season. But, what is Devs about?
What is Devs all about?
If you work in front of a computer, you have probably understood that Devs is an abbreviation for Developers. So yes, Devs is about a group of developers, working on a top-secret project that nobody is allowed to know about. One day, they invite a new guy to join the crew. He is not allowed to speak to anyone about what's happening, and he cannot bring anything to his office (like a phone or so). Based on the expectations, he doesn't follow the instructions, and his life ends quickly. But, his girlfriend doesn't give up easily, and she is determined to find out what is going on and what really happened to her boyfriend.
It might sound like a typical story, but it isn't. First of all, the actual project that the developers work with is totally interesting and not a normal project, so just following the story from their view is an interesting event.
What makes Devs a brilliant series?
Once again, the fact that the story comes to an end. And the fact that every single episode is interesting and takes us all further into the plot. It is well played, it is packed with nice effects, and it is asking moral questions, just as well as making us sympathize with the different personalities in the series.
It should also be said that it is very hard to predict what will actually happen. Will the girlfriend win, and make this a Hollywood end? Or will the "Devs" people win and keep on with their project? And will they succeed with the project? There are lots of open questions, and you will actually watch most of this show without actually having a clue about how this story will come to an end. That is not typical nowadays, and it helps make Devs an awesome series that is worth watching.
In other words...
Devs is a series in eight parts, recommended for everyone, but as it touches topics such as encryption, AI, programming, hacking, security, and much more, it might be especially interesting for those with some computer skills (like all of us here at Hive)!
