A few months ago, I got the chance to watch Bodyguard on Netflix. It is a BBC series and it has received a lot of praise, and in addition, Richard Madden has won a lot of prizes for his character in the series. The creator of Line of Duty is Jed Mercurio, a brilliant mind when it comes to police stories. Not only is he the director of Line of Duty, he has also written the story. But, not only is he the creator of Line of Duty, he is also the guy who created Bodyguard.
And yes, that is how I stumbled upon Line of Duty. I discussed Bodyguard with someone, and they promised me that if I loved Bodyguard, I would for sure love Line of Duty as well, considering how it was created by the same guy. And that is why I recently gave Line of Duty a try.
Some background info on Line of Duty
Line of Duty is currently running in its fifth season on BBC in England. It was a giant success from the start, and it is on the list of the 50 best BBC shows ever. It is also among the most BBC2 productions ever in history. Due to its popularity, BBC decided to air the fourth (and the fifth season) on its main channel (BBC) instead of at BBC2, something that lead to a giant increase in the amount of viewers (moving from 4,5 million viewers in season 3 to more than 9 million viewers in season 4).
As mentioned earlier, the fifth season is running on BBC now, and a sixth season of the TV series has already been ordered by BBC. In other words, there is more coming to those in love with Line of Duty in the future.
What is Line of Duty all about?
While most police series deals with how the good guys catch the bad guys, Line of Duty is approaching the subject from a different perspective. It is, of course, about catching the bad guys, but the main officers we follow in Line of Duty are out there to catch the corrupt good guys, or those abusing their positions in the police or living a corrupt life in some way or another.Just thinking about working as a cop trying to catch other bad cops sounds terrible to me. I cannot imagine anyone more hated by fellow police officers than those investigating and looking into the others to find out if they are doing any shady business. And yes, that is what you will see and experience as you sit down to watch Line of Duty. I really like the story and it is very interesting to see a police series approaching their daily life from such a perspective.
Is Line of Duty worth watching?
If you have seen Bodyguard, you for sure remember the extreme pace of the first 20 minutes of the show. It slowed down a bit afterward, but it kept a very high tempo from start till end. In Line of Duty, they are not in such a rush, and thus, you will see and experience that things are slower and not so action filled as Bodyguard. Some will find this comforting, while I am on the edge of calling it a bit boring. But, I have got to say that I haven't completely made up my mind yet. I am still in the middle of the first season of Line of Duty, and I am planning to watch more as time allows me to. Maybe I will get totally addicted and stay up in the night to binge-watch, or maybe I will look for something else to watch after watching a few more parts. I seriously don't know yet, but I feel as if Line of Duty really has great potential, and I kind of 85% like it, so it is still one of the TV series I find highest on my list of stuff I want to watch at the moment!But, as I said, I am still in the first season, so I guess there is still a lot to catch up on.
