Full of drama, romance, and guilt, Atonement is one of those films that are not easily erased from the memory. The impetus for greatness lies in its artistic rendering and expressiveness through the eyes of a director, who, along with his screenwriter, recreates from a novel a spectacular landscape and tragic story.
I remember watching this film when I was younger; at that time, my limited mind did not appreciate in detail the particular cinematographic art of this film, but now, as an adult and with a different mentality and perspective, I was able to make a more appreciative, paused and conclusive analysis of this work of cinema.
I found it on HBO Max while looking for something new to watch and, suddenly, I was pleasantly surprised. I had to watch it right away, no joke, I needed to watch it in its entirety since at the time; the first time I watched it, I could not finish it, but watched it in pieces. Before you, I present my opinion on this classic film with a powerful plot.
Llena de drama, romance y culpa, Atonement es de esas películas que no se borran fácilmente de los recuerdos. El ímpetu de grandeza radica en su representación artística y su expresividad a través de los ojos de un director, que, junto a su guionista, recrean de una novela un paisaje espectacular y una historia trágica.
Recuerdo haber visto esta película más joven; en aquel entonces, mi mente limitada no apreciaba con detenimiento el particular arte cinematográfico de esta película, pero ahora, ya de adulto y con una mentalidad y perspectivas diferentes, pude realizar un análisis más apreciativo, pausado y concluyente sobre esta obra del cine.
La encontré en HBO Max buscando algo nuevo que ver y, de repente, me hallé con esta grata sorpresa. Tuve que verla de inmediato, sin chistear, necesitaba verla completa ya que en aquel entonces; la primera vez que la vi, no pude terminarla, sino que la vi por trozos. Ante ustedes, presento mi opinión sobre este filme clásico con una trama potente.

Atonement is a British film released in 2007. It was directed by Joe Wright and written by Christopher Hampton; based on the successful novel of the same name by the English writer Ian McEwan.
The music was done by Dario Marianelli and the photography by Seamus McGarvey. The cast includes a recognizable cast of actors such as James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai, Benedict Cumberbatch, among others.

The plot is set in 1935 England and tells us about two lovers living a forbidden love. Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), is a clerk with a privileged status in the house of Tallis; a highborn family living in a beautiful mansion in the countryside. He has dreams and hopes of becoming a writer, but his heart is captivated by Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley); one of the owners of the house, so he decides to stay working for Tallis and be close to the woman he loves.
One morning, Cecilia's younger sister: Briony (Saoirse Ronan); a 13-year-old girl with a great premature talent for writing, observes something through one of the windows of the house that for her strange: a misunderstood moment between Robbie and Cecilia, turned into something serious in the girl's imagination.
As the day goes on, Briony formulates in her mind that Robbie is an evil man who wants to rape her sister, so she accuses the police that he is sexually deprived. This lie will change the destiny of both lovers, separated by war and the version of a mythomaniac girl.
What stands out the most about the film, from the beginning, is its beautiful photography of bright and vivid colors, along with every detail of the scenery and costumes, leaving us trapped in a beautiful dreamlike country or an environment full of magical realism. The dialogue and performances also pleased me a lot, especially from the main actors and some supporting ones.
La trama está ambientada en la Inglaterra de 1935, y nos habla de dos enamorados viviendo un amor prohibido. Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), es un empleado con un estatus de privilegiado en la casa de los Tallis; una familia de alta alcurnia que vive en una hermosa mansión en el campo. Él tiene sueños y esperanzas de convertirse en escritor, pero su corazón está cautivado por Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley); una de las dueñas de la casa, por lo que decide quedarse trabajando para los Tallis y estar cerca de la mujer que ama.
Una mañana, la hermana menor de Cecilia: Briony (Saoirse Ronan); una joven de 13 años con un gran talento prematuro para la escritura, observa algo por una de las ventanas de la casa que para ella era raro: un mal entendido momento entre Robbie y Cecilia, se convirtió en algo grave en la imaginación de la niña.

Los diálogos y las actuaciones también me gustaron mucho, especialmente de los actores principales y algunos de reparto.
I felt the excellent chemistry between McAvoy and Knightley, the distinction of their characters and the way they expressed them was one of the things that captivated me the most. Everything is beautiful during the first few acts, but after that, everything becomes cold and depressing.
After Robbie is arrested for Briony's lie, everything changes. The bright colors degrade to dark, because already here begins the warlike atmosphere within the story. After being arrested, Robbie had to make a decision: go to prison or go to war; usually, the second decision was the most chosen, but at a terrible cost.
Cecilia, after what happened to Robbie, left her family home and went to the city. Briony kept silent and never told the truth, feeding the guilt that as the years went by, she was ruined by carrying the blood of the love of those lovers.
The film leaves us with some unknowns about Briony; for example, why didn't she tell the truth and lie so that Robbie would be arrested? Did she dislike him? The latter, may or may not be true, since from the beginning of the film one can notice a certain liking and sympathy between Robbie and Briony. So what happened there, why did she keep quiet?
As we watch the movie, we will discover the reason why Briony lied, although we have to analyze it carefully, as the answer can be confusing. The movie leaves us with allusive details and clues, but at the same time they are assertive to generate a conclusion about the cause of Briony's lie. This is very important to understand, since even the title of the film refers only to the torment that Briony bears for having lied and separated those two souls in love.
Sentí la excelente química entre McAvoy y Knightley, la distinción de sus personajes y la manera en como los expresaron fue una de las cosas que más me cautivó. Todo es belleza durante los primeros actos, pero después, todo se torna frío y depresivo.
Después de que Robbie es arrestado por la mentira de Briony, todo cambia. Los colores vivos se degradan a oscuros, pues ya aquí comienza el ambiente bélico dentro de la historia. Después de ser arrestado, Robbie tuvo que tomar una decisión: ir a prisión o ir a la guerra; habitualmente, la segunda decisión era la más escogida, pero a un costo terrible.
Cecilia, después de lo que le pasó a Robbie, abandonó la casa de su familia y se fue a la ciudad. Briony se mantuvo en silencio y nunca dijo la verdad, alimentando la culpa que con el pasar de los años la derruía llevando la sangre del amor de aquellos enamorados.
La película nos deja con algunas incógnitas sobre Briony; como, por ejemplo, ¿por qué ella no dijo la verdad y mintió para que a Robbie se lo llevaran detenido? ¿Acaso no le agradaba? Esto último, puede o no puede ser verdad, pues desde el principio de la película se puede notar un cierto agrado y simpatía entre Robbie y Briony. Entonces, ¿qué pasó allí? ¿Por qué ella se quedó callada?
A medida que vayamos viendo la película, descubriremos el motivo del por qué Briony mintió, aunque hay que analizarlo con detenimiento, ya que la respuesta puede ser confusa. La película nos deja detalles y pistas alusivas, pero que a la vez son asertivas para generar una conclusión sobre la causa de la mentira de Briony. Esto es muy importante comprenderlo, ya que hasta el título de la película hace referencia únicamente al tormento que lleva Briony por haber mentido y separado a aquellas dos almas enamoradas.
Whether Cecilia and Robbie end up together or not, is something that I will not reveal in this article, because that would be like the biggest spoiler, however, I want to highlight the strong atmosphere of tragedy that is lived within the film, with scenes of World War II; full of bitter moments as to live them in person. Desolation, sadness, depressive environments full of corpses of soldiers and soldiers, and many other things that the film shows us of that fateful war period.
The soundtrack goes from cheerful and funny to melancholic and distressing. We feel in each scene, according to its event, those deep musical sounds that change our mood as truths and scenes are revealed. I liked the music so much that I sometimes listen to it to relax a bit when I need to rest my mind; it is not for nothing that it has been nominated several times for Best Soundtrack and has won awards.
Si Cecilia y Robbie al final terminan juntos o no, es algo que no pienso revelar en este artículo, porque eso sería como el spoiler más grande, sin embargo, quiero destacar el ambiente fuerte de tragedia que se va viviendo dentro de la película, con escenas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial; llenas de momentos amargos como para vivirlos en persona. Desolación, tristeza, entornos depresivos llenos de cadáveres de infantes y soldados, y muchas cosas más que la película nos va mostrando de aquel periodo bélico tan fatídico.
La banda sonora va transitando de alegre y divertida a melancólica y angustiante. Sentimos en cada escena, de acuerdo a su suceso, esos profundos sonidos musicales que cambian nuestro estado de ánimo a medida que se van revelando verdades y escenas. La música me gustó tanto, que a veces la escucho para relajarme un poco cuando necesito descansar mi mente; no es por nada que haya sido nominada varias veces como Mejor Banda Sonora y que haya ganado premios.
Conclusions
Atonement, a film full of drama, romance, betrayal and a war environment that shows the misery of the Second World War, is one of the dramas I have enjoyed the most. Watching it again after such a long time was a good idea, because this time I was able to analyze it better. The captivating plot, the beautiful colors during the first part of the story, then we cross a bridge to darkness, unhappiness; not only because of the environment we live in, but also because of the anguish of a love separated by a slander.
We see the guilt, as a latent feeling that manifests itself as we reach stronger scenes. The music, the camera approaches, the costumes, the sets, everything seemed to me to be meticulously well designed to try to represent on film, a literary work of great caliber. I highly recommend this classic and, I take it as a reference, as a gem of cinematic drama.
Conclusiones
Atonement, una película llena de drama, romance, traición y un ambiente bélico que muestra la miseria de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, es una de las obras de drama que más he disfrutado. Volver a verla después de tanto tiempo ha sido buena idea, porque en esta ocasión sí que la pude analizar mejor. La trama cautivadora, los colores hermosos durante la primera parte de la historia, luego cruzamos un puente hacia la oscuridad, la desdicha; no solo por el entorno que se vive, sino por la angustia de un amor separado por una calumnia.
Vemos la culpa, como un sentimiento latente que se va manifestando al llegar a escenas más fuertes. La música, los enfoques de cámara, el vestuario, lo escenarios, todo me pareció que está meticulosamente bien diseñado para tratar de representar en cine, una obra literaria de gran calibre. Recomiendo mucho este clásico y, lo tomo de referencia, como una joya del drama cinematográfico.
