Nadie puede confiar plenamente en sus sentidos, nuestra capacidad de percepción es limitada. Cualquier animal, por ejemplo, tiene más agudeza visual que nosotros. En una noche oscura los juegos de sombras disparan fácilmente la imaginación, haciéndonos creer que vemos cosas que no existen en la realidad…
El director Joe Wright, a quien recuerdo por el film “La noche más oscura” (2017), logra hacer en esta película, Atonement (2007), una excelente adaptación del célebre libro del escritor inglés Ian McEwan, dónde una impresión errónea estimula una mentira que desencadena varias tragedias.
Bryoni (Saoirse Ronan) es una adolescente de trece años que disfruta escribiendo historias. Vive con su hermana Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley), unos años mayor, en una inmensa mansión de estilo victoriano en la campiña inglesa, durante los años previos a la segunda guerra mundial.
Cecilia es una muchacha desenfadada, no cree mucho en las normas de su tiempo, y tiene un romance clandestino con Robbie (James McAvoy ), un muchacho que no es de su clase, el hijo del ama de llaves de la familia.
Bryoni está en esa época de la vida en la que comienza a sentir el despertar del amor; también siente algo por Robbie, pero este la trata como si fuera una niña.
Una tarde Bryoni ve una escena entre Robbie y Cecilia que la deja muy confundida, a partir de ese momento su desbordada imaginación le hace pensar que quizá Robbie trata de hacerle daño a su hermana.
Los asuntos se complican más cuando Robbie, a manera de travesura, le escribe una pequeña esquela a Cecilia, con un fuerte contenido erótico. No es su intención darla a conocer, de hecho escribe otra carta en un tono ligero, pero al introducirla en un sobre se le traspapelan las dos y termina escogiendo la primera.
Mientras lleva la carta se encuentra a Bryoni en el camino y le pide que la entregue a su hermana. Tarde se da cuenta Robbie del error que ha cometido. Bryoni lee el escrito y se termina de convencer que el novio de su hermana es una especia de maniático sexual.
Por esos días están de visita donde los Tallis, una prima, casi de la misma edad de Bryoni, y sus dos hermanos pequeños. Para desahogarse la niña decide compartir su secreto con la prima, ambas quedan muy alarmadas, pero deciden no hablar con nadie sobre el contenido de la carta.
Una noche los dos niños pequeños se extravían y se declara una búsqueda donde participan todos los que viven en la casa de los Tallis. Bryoni toma por un camino solitario y oscuro, de pronto se encuentra a su prima tendida en el suelo junto a un hombre que no se ve claramente, aparentemente ha sido víctima de una agresión sexual. Bryoni la convence de que su ¿agresor? ha sido Robbie. La prima decide confirmar la historia.
Las dos niñas llegan a la casa y cuentan a todos lo que Bryoni piensa que ha sucedido. Llaman a las autoridades. A Robbie lo condenan a prisión, luego le conmutan la pena al mandarlo al frente de guerra. La mentira de la niña destruye la vida de tres personas…
Atonement (expiación) es una película profundamente dramática, cuyo tema principal pudiera ser la imposibilidad de enmendar el error.
Bryoni es una niña inquieta, muy despierta, a quien le encanta escribir historias. No es mala gente o malvada, más bien es dócil, organizada y disciplinada. Está en esa etapa difícil de la vida donde se deja atrás la niñez, sus sentimientos son confusos, como cualquier persona a esa edad. Como a muchos, le cuesta llevarse bien con su hermana mayor, sobre todo porque la otra es muy diferente a ella. Y hasta pudiera ser que le tenga un poco de envidia.
Cuando decide acusar a Robbie no tiene clara conciencia de lo que está haciendo. ¿Se puede pedir total responsabilidad a alguien de esa edad? Y no es que la esté justificando, ni que yo esté restando importancia al acto de mentir. No, la mentira es algo grave y la película da cuenta de sus consecuencias.
Pero es importante considerar que quizá una muchacha de trece años no tenga clara conciencia de las repercusiones de una mentira de ese calibre. Pueda ser que en la crianza de Bryoni este haya sido un tema sin tratar. En la película los padres de la niña son figuras intrascendentes, la madre si acaso tendrá unos dos minutos de aparición en toda la película y el padre no se ve nunca, solo lo nombran dos o tres veces. Bryoni lleva una existencia solitaria, que va llenando a fuerza de escribir historias.
De haber podido aclarar a tiempo sus dudas probablemente no hubiese incurrido en ese terrible error.
El caso es que Bryoni va a cargar toda la vida con el peso de su error. Al llegar a los dieciocho años siente una gran necesidad de redención, y la busca por la vía de la asistencia al prójimo, se hace enfermera en los tiempos de la guerra. Es lo más que puede hacer para lograr un poco de paz con su conciencia, porque la turbulencia de esos tiempos no va a dar para más. Lo hecho, hecho quedó. Acá la moraleja puede ser que los errores quedan para siempre.
Atonement es una película muy bien contada. Y aunque su narrativa no es lineal, porque va y viene en el tiempo, el guión permite llevar la secuencia de la trama, no hay forma de perderse. Algunos pasajes se presentan a modo de capítulos lo que facilita llevar la secuencia temporal. Esta manera de manejar los tiempos de las historia siempre me ha fascinado.
En el momento de filmar la película todos los actores eran muy jóvenes pero ya se veía en ellos su calidad actoral. Saoirse Ronan, Bryoni, hace una excelente interpretación de una niña criada de acuerdo a los cánones de la época, sencilla, ingenua, sin malicia, metida en su mundo, presa de sus confusiones y de su exceso de imaginación.
Keira Knightley, Cecilia, quien actúa también en una película que reseñe hace poco: “Un Método Peligroso”, se mete muy bien en la piel de una mujer que a ratos se muestra insegura, ansiosa, y que no se resigna a perder a su amor. James McAvoy, el sufrido Robbie, es un actor de muchos matices, con actuaciones convincentes.
La película cuenta con la excelente fotografía de Seamus McGarvey , estuvo nominada para los premios Oscar de ese año. Tiene una combinación muy equilibrada de primeros planos al comienzo de la película y luego del uso de los planos secuencias. Hay críticos que sostienen que la secuencia filmada en la playa de Dunkerque, en el momento de la evacuación de los soldados británicos, es una de las mejores de la historia del cine. La cámara sigue a los protagonistas durante varios minutos. En las partes más difíciles el director resolvió la dificultad de la toma dejando salir y entrar del encuadre a los personajes mientras la cámara seguía filmando.
Atonement es una película que recomiento, con recursos ingeniosos para retar la atención del espectador, con una bella fotografía, excelentes actuaciones, y diálogos brillantes. Vale la pena dedicarle un visionado.

The director Joe Wright, whom I remember for the film "The Darkest Night" (2017), manages to make in this film, Atonement (2007), an excellent adaptation of the famous book by the English writer Ian McEwan, where a wrong impression stimulates a lie that triggers several tragedies.
Bryoni (Saoirse Ronan) is a thirteen-year-old teenager who enjoys writing stories. She lives with her sister Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley), a few years older, in a huge Victorian-style mansion in the English countryside, during the years before the Second World War.
Cecilia is a carefree girl, doesn't believe much in the norms of her time, and has a clandestine affair with Robbie (James McAvoy ), a boy not of her class, the son of the family housekeeper.
Bryoni is at that time in life when she begins to feel the awakening of love; she also has feelings for Robbie, but he treats her as if she were a child.
One afternoon Bryoni sees a scene between Robbie and Cecilia that leaves her very confused, from that moment on her overflowing imagination makes her think that maybe Robbie is trying to hurt her sister.
Matters become more complicated when Robbie, as a prank, writes a small note to Cecilia, with a strong erotic content. It is not his intention to make it known, in fact he writes another letter in a light tone, but when he puts it in an envelope he misplaces them both and ends up choosing the first one.
While carrying the letter he meets Bryoni on the road and asks him to deliver it to his sister. Robbie belatedly realizes the mistake he has made. Bryoni reads the letter and becomes convinced that her sister's boyfriend is some kind of sex maniac.
In those days they are visiting the Tallis, a cousin, almost the same age as Bryoni, and her two little brothers. To unburden herself, the girl decides to share her secret with her cousin, both are very alarmed, but decide not to talk to anyone about the contents of the letter.
One night the two small children go astray and a search is declared in which all those who live in the Tallis' house participate. Bryoni takes a lonely and dark road, suddenly finds his cousin lying on the ground next to a man who is not clearly seen, apparently a victim of sexual assault. Bryoni convinces her that her "attacker" was Robbie. The cousin decides to confirm the story.
The two girls arrive at the house and tell everyone what Bryoni thinks has happened. They call the authorities. Robbie is sentenced to prison, then has his sentence commuted by being sent to the war front. The girl's lie destroys the lives of three people...
Atonement is a deeply dramatic film, whose main theme could be the impossibility of making amends.
Bryoni is a restless, wide-awake girl who loves to write stories. She is not bad people or evil, rather she is docile, organized and disciplined. She is in that difficult stage of life where childhood is left behind, her feelings are confused, like anyone at that age. Like many, she finds it difficult to get along with her older sister, especially because the other one is very different from her. And she might even be a little envious of her older sister.
When she decides to accuse Robbie, she is not clearly aware of what she is doing. Can you ask for total responsibility from someone of that age? And it's not that I'm justifying her, or that I'm downplaying the importance of the act of lying. No, lying is a serious thing and the film gives an account of its consequences.
But it is important to consider that a thirteen-year-old girl may not be clearly aware of the repercussions of such a lie. It may be that in Bryoni's upbringing this has been an unaddressed issue. In the film, the girl's parents are inconsequential figures, the mother has only two minutes of appearance in the whole film and the father is never seen, he is only mentioned two or three times. Bryoni leads a solitary existence, which he fills by writing stories.
Had he been able to clarify his doubts in time, he probably would not have made this terrible mistake.
The fact is that Bryoni will carry the weight of his mistake for the rest of his life. When she reaches the age of eighteen she feels a great need for redemption, and she seeks it by way of assistance to others, she becomes a nurse during wartime. It is the most she can do to achieve a little peace with her conscience, because the turbulence of those times will not give her any more. What's done is done. The moral here may be that mistakes are forever.
Atonement is a very well told film. And although its narrative is not linear, because it goes back and forth in time, the script allows the sequence of the plot, there is no way to get lost. Some passages are presented as chapters, which makes it easier to follow the time sequence. This way of handling the time of the story has always fascinated me.
At the time of shooting the film all the actors were very young but you could already see their acting quality. Saoirse Ronan, Bryoni, gives an excellent interpretation of a girl raised according to the canons of the time, simple, naive, without malice, immersed in her world, prey to her confusions and over-imagination.
Keira Knightley, Cecilia, who also plays in a film I recently reviewed: "A Dangerous Method", gets very well into the skin of a woman who at times is insecure, anxious, and who is not resigned to losing her love. James McAvoy, the long-suffering Robbie, is a nuanced actor with convincing performances.
The film features excellent cinematography by Seamus McGarvey, who was nominated for an Oscar that year. It has a very balanced combination of close-ups at the beginning of the film and then the use of sequence shots. There are critics who argue that the sequence filmed on the beach of Dunkirk, at the time of the evacuation of the British soldiers, is one of the best in the history of cinema. The camera follows the protagonists for several minutes. In the most difficult parts the director solved the difficulty of the shot by letting the characters go in and out of the frame while the camera kept rolling.
Atonement is a film that I recommend, with ingenious resources to challenge the viewer's attention, beautiful photography, excellent performances, and brilliant dialogue. It is well worth a viewing.
