We have seen drugged people, drugged old people, drugged children; the side effects, the addiction, the cocaine, the dilated eyes and the human stupidity rising to a million or going half way with a little peace, well, in this movie we won't see any of that, as there will only be a lot of violence and drugs ingested by a cocaine addicted bear. Have you ever seen anything like that?
Since the beginning of time, man has fought against nature to survive; I'm not going to make a long speech about that, the point I want to get to is: Has a human ever faced a wild and predatory animal drugged with cocaine? In this film we will see what happens and the consequences it has.
Hemos visto personas drogadas, ancianos drogados, niños drogados; los efectos secundarios, la adicción, la cocaína, los ojos dilatados y la estupidez humana elevándose a millón o quedando a medias con un poco de paz, bueno, en esta película no veremos nada de eso, pues solo habrá mucha violencia y drogas ingeridas por un oso cocainómano. ¿Alguna vez has visto algo así?
Desde los inicios de los tiempos, el hombre ha luchado contra la naturaleza para sobrevivir; no voy a hacer un discurso largo sobre eso, al punto que quiero llegar es: ¿Alguna vez se ha enfrentado un humano a un animal salvaje y depredador drogado con cocaína? Cocaine Bear is an American film directed by Elizabeth Banks and written by Jimmy Warden based on true events. We have in our hands a nonsensical story that exceeds the limits of absurdity. In 1985, a plane flying over some mountains in the State of Georgia, USA, carelessly releases kilos of cocaine in the forest, nobody would have imagined that these piles of drugs would be found and consumed by a wild bear, which will adopt a very unusual behavior.
The animal, already addicted to cocaine, wanders through the forest looking for more drugs. Searching among tourists, locals, explorers, rangers, everyone who crosses his path will suffer the wrath of the intoxicated bear. With plenty of black humor and blood bathing the feet of the trees, the main characters will have to survive and evade this cruel fate.
I like fresh ideas when they are well executed, and in this case I liked the use of acid humor to spice up the whole context. Considering the absurdity of the story and the laughable plot, I think it was smart to have combined horror with black comedy.

Tenemos en nuestras manos una historia desatinada que supera los límites de lo absurdo. En 1985, un avión que volaba sobre unas montañas en el Estado de Georgia, USA, libera descuidadamente kilos de cocaína en el bosque, nadie se iba a imaginar que estos montones de drogas iban a ser encontrados y consumidos por un oso silvestre, el cual adoptará un comportamiento muy inusual.
El animal, ya adicto a la cocaína deambula por el bosque buscando más droga. Buscando entre turistas, locales, exploradores, guardabosques, todo el que se cruce en su camino sufrirá la ira del oso intoxicado. Con bastante humor negro y sangre bañando los pies de los árboles, los personajes principales deberán sobrevivir y eludir este cruel destino.
Me gustan las ideas frescas cuando se ejecutan bien, y en este caso me gustó que usaran el humor ácido para aderezar todo el contexto. Si tomamos en cuenta lo absurdo de la historia y la trama risible que se nos presenta, me parece que fue inteligente haber combinado el horror con la comedia negra.
When the plot got exciting, all I could do was laugh. I felt a little sorry for the characters, but the actors' performances and the dialogues were hilarious. It's typical when you combine the ridiculous with a situation of extreme danger, plus who would have thought a bear would get high on cocaine?
Universal Pictures is a company that knows how to spread its stories, as in the case of this film, the box office gross exceeded 75 million dollars. It has been a very successful film, in fact, it has been a long time since I have seen a film like this with these elements. However, we know that commercial films have their flaws, the hilarious and crazy in a story can be good, but there are things that did not convince me.
First, why does the bear take a little girl without doing her any harm? What about the people carrying guns in the movie? Couldn't anyone shoot the bear right from the beginning? Why did the bear chase some people and dismember them, and did nothing to others carrying cocaine? Why would the narcos bother looking for a few kilos of drugs, when at the beginning of the movie there are many, many more bags?
Cuando la trama se ponía emocionante, yo lo único que hacía era reírme. Sentía un poco de pena por los personajes, pero las interpretaciones de los actores y los diálogos me causaron una sensación hilarante. Es algo típico cuando se combina lo ridículo con una situación de peligro extrema, además, ¿quién iba a pensar que un oso se iba a drogar con cocaína?
La Universal Pictures es una compañía que sabe cómo difundir sus historias, pues en el caso de esta película, la recaudación superó los 75 millones de dólares. Ha sido una película muy taquillera, de hecho, tenía tiempo que no veía una película así con estos elementos. Sin embargo, sabemos que los filmes comerciales tienen sus defectos, lo hilarante y loco en una historia puede ser bueno, pero hay cosas que no me convencieron.
Primero, ¿por qué el oso se lleva a una niña sin hacerle ningún daño? ¿Qué hay de las personas que portaban armas en la película? ¿Acaso nadie pudo dispararle bien al oso desde el principio? ¿Por qué el oso perseguía a algunas personas y las desmembraba, y a otras que llevaban cocaína no les hacía nada? ¿Para que los narcos se molestarían en buscar unos cuantos kilos de droga, cuando al principio de la película se ve que hay muchas, pero muchas bolsas más?
These are things that I saw as judgmental and lower the narrative quality of this story, however, the majority of an audience that just wants to be entertained with jokes and blood running all over the place, don't care about these details. I for one am overly observant to such things, and while the film did make me laugh, I can't rate it as anything more than a decent comedy made by a production company that we already know how their films end up.
I could feel the tension in the more macabre scenes, followed by the comedy to soften the horrific scenes of severed bodies. Elizabeth Banks does have a very heavy humor, something we can corroborate in her work as director in Pitch Perfect 2, the sequel to the funny movie of those girls who sing a cappella. I don't remember much about the actress, I just know that she has always had a penchant for comedy.
We also have the participation of Ray Liotta and Keri Russell, two actors with a long career and who always do a good job; Russell's dramatic performances are always welcome at any time, and Liotta's sarcastic and eloquent expressions have that touch, which you can't help but notice.
Son cosas que veía con criterio y le bajan puntos a la calidad narrativa de esta historia, sin embargo, a la mayoría de un público que solo quiere entretenerse con chistes y sangre corriendo por todas partes, no le importan estos detalles. Yo por mi parte soy demasiado observador a esas cosas, y aunque la película si me hizo reír, no puedo calificarla más allá de una comedia decente hecha por una productora que ya sabemos cómo terminan sus films.
Podía sentir en las escenas más macabras bastante tensión, acto seguido venía la comedia para suavizar las horrorosas escenas de cuerpos cercenados. Elizabeth Banks sí que tiene un humor muy pesado, cosa que podemos corroborar en su trabajo como directora en Pitch Perfect 2, la secuela de la graciosa película de aquellas chicas que cantan a capela. La actriz no la recuerdo mucho, solo sé que siempre ha tenido esa tendencia por la comedia.
Tenemos también la participación de Ray Liotta y Keri Russell, dos actores con una trayectoria larga y que además siempre hacen un buen trabajo; pues las actuaciones de drama de Russell siempre son bienvenidas en cualquier momento, y las expresiones sarcásticas y elocuentes de Liotta tienen ese toque, el cual no puedes dejar de notar.
I won't deny that I liked this new story with a humorous setting and plot. Even with all the mistakes in the narrative, I found it an entertaining movie that, even if it causes you tension, will make you laugh. It is something new and different, with a black humor which, although some people don't want to admit it, is a humor that enchants and also puts you in a reflective mode. Cocaine Bear may not be the best of the best in horror, but it will leave you dismembered with some of the jokes.
No negaré que me gustó esta historia nueva con escenario y trama jocosa. Con todo y errores en la narrativa, me pareció una película entretenida que, aunque te cause tensión, te sacará carcajadas. Es algo nuevo y diferente, con un humor negro el cual, si bien, hay personas que no quieren admitirlo, es un humor que encanta y además te coloca en modo reflexivo. Cocaine Bear, no será lo mejor de lo mejor en tema de terror, pero si te deja desmembrado con algunos chistes.
