Hey, hey, movie lovers!

I recently rewatched one of my favorite movies from my childhood—one I used to watch over and over again because, first, I loved the movie, and second, because I had a crush on the lead actor, hahaha. The movie is called Billy Elliot.

IMDb

Billy Elliot is a British drama set in County Durham during the 1984 UK miners’ strike. In a sociocultural context marked by stereotypes and the decline of the labor movement, Billy Elliot discovers his passion for dance.

Billy is an 11-year-old boy whose family is in jeopardy due to the economic crisis and the miners’ strike. His father, Jackie, and his brother, Tony—both miners and staunch supporters of the strike—expect Billy to follow in their footsteps. But after accidentally stumbling upon a ballet class, Billy Elliot wants only one thing: to dance. And after recognizing Billy’s talent, Ms. Wilkinson encourages him to audition for the Royal Ballet School, which becomes Billy’s goal.

This is a movie I really like, since it strikes a great balance between drama and comedy, while also offering a moving political critique and social portrait that, combined with the character of Billy Elliot, is truly touching. It challenges the sexist attitudes surrounding men in ballet and, more broadly, the sexist prejudices of which men are also often victims.

Something I really love about Billy’s character is how he expresses his joy, anger, and sadness through dance; when he feels a very strong emotion he can’t suppress, he simply lets loose and starts dancing, using his steps as a means of expression or protest to convey how he feels. And he does it in such a lighthearted yet spontaneous way that it contrasts sharply with the atmosphere of crisis surrounding the film’s plot.

As a result, the story feels energetic, vibrant, and fast-paced, and at times even resembles a musical comedy with Billy Elliot jumping and dancing all over the place—which shows that, despite his circumstances, he’s still striving to be happy.

When we focus solely on Billy, we see a story of personal triumph: he has to fight against stereotypes, his social circumstances, and his father and brother’s refusal to let him continue dancing. On the other hand, there is the labor strike and its impact on Billy’s own father; the mine closure and layoffs deal a severe blow to the British labor movement and deprive thousands of families of their livelihoods, filling Jackie with frustration. She and Tony join the strikes despite police repression and persecution, and while this is happening, Billy dances and feels “…that everything disappears.”

And although Jackie initially refuses to let Billy continue dancing, Billy showcases his talent by giving it his all, and Jackie breaks down; his son could be a genius, and the world would never know it. This is how Jackie makes the difficult decision to leave the strike and betray his ideals so that his son can have a future; it is this act of love—and at the same time, sacrifice—that serves as a bridge for Billy to set out on his path.

IMDb

And it is through the sacrifice of Billy’s father and brother and the collective solidarity of friends and acquaintances (who were also affected by the crisis) that Billy Elliot fulfills his dream. Billy fought to forge his identity and pursue his dreams, leaving behind prejudices and social expectations; if we look only at Billy, he succeeded as a dancer, but the miners’ strike failed, and the mining towns lost.

I love stories about people who fight for their dreams. Billy using dance to show his feelings is very special.
