Hello, film and cinema fans!
I hope you are all well. As for me, I am enjoying my January holidays, which have been extended by a week due to the situation in the country, so I have spent the last few nights watching films from my 'films to watch, but I don't know when' list, and it was the turn of Predator: Badlands.
First of all, I must say that I am a huge fan of the Predator saga, so much so that I have seen all the films, series and some comics of this incredible saga that I started when I was a child. So I loved that in recent years they have been revitalising the franchise with new instalments such as Prey, Predator: Killer of Killers and now Predator: BadLands.
The latter is very different from its predecessors, as it offers a radical change of perspective, where you basically no longer see things from the point of view of the prey, but from that of the predator. This story follows Dek, a predator who is marginalised for being a dwarf, but who has a great desire to make his father and brother proud. So, on his first hunt, he promises to hunt the Kalisk, a species of animal that is difficult to kill, even for a Yautja.
But being a dwarf, he is seen as defective, which embarrasses the clan to which he belongs, so his father orders his older brother Kwei to kill Dek. Kwei refuses, arguing that his brother has the right to prove his worth on a hunt, but his father refuses to even give Dek a chance. So, to save his brother, he throws Dek into a ship so that his brother can escape and confronts his father, a confrontation that ends with Kwei's death, in front of Dek's eyes.
The ship is activated as Kwei's last act for his brother, and Dek faints. Dek soon wakes up on Genna, the planet where the Kalisk reside and where Dek will find friends and embark on his quest for revenge for his brother's death.
I remember when the trailer came out; many people criticised the design of the Predator and the story, saying that they humanised the Predator and turned the story into a family drama. What actually happens here is that they show everything from the Predator's perspective and not from the prey's, as well as showing the system, hierarchy and relationships that the Predators have with each other.
Instead of just showing them in their role as hunters, when they are already experts, we have the perspective of a young, marginalised Predator who does not physically conform to the standard, who interacts and forms an alliance with a woman, which is not new to the plot. Besides, I don't think there's anything wrong with his appearance, and it was partly done to give the Predator more expression.
As for the story, I really liked it because it showed a new side to the predators, although I do feel that it was less dark than other instalments. I really liked the action and fight sequences, with a risky and ambitious visual style, along with touches of humour that I admit made me laugh.
This is a more emotional instalment that changes the tone a bit from what we're used to, but I feel it's justified by the type of story it tells, as it allows us to see how the Yautja system works for those who have only seen the films.
This story allows us to explore the world of a Yautja, especially one that does not follow the standard and its culture, giving a new facet to the saga without taking away from the essence that has always characterised it. Although the 'grotesque' tone was toned down somewhat, I still liked it and felt that it brought something new to the franchise, although I admit that I feel the final fight could have been more incredible.
