Don’t you ever watch a movie and wish you could erase your memory of it so you could watch it again as if it were the first time? It’s happened to me—not often, but it has happened. One example of this is the movie Whiplash: Music and Obsession.
I saw it for the first time with my mom when I was little; we both liked it so much that one day when we went to the mall, we saw a super-luxurious music store, and there it was, on full display in the window—a professional drum set. Well… that was my Christmas present, and even though I didn’t become the next Buddy Rich, I really enjoyed those afternoons playing nonstop. A few days ago, I watched it again after so long, and I just had to write about it.
Whiplash tells a story of obsession, perfection, and individualism where talent alone isn’t enough. The story follows Andrew Neiman, a young drummer studying at the prestigious Shaffer Conservatory in New York. Andrew wants to be “one of the greats,” so he does everything he can to catch the attention not only of the conservatory’s best instructor but also of its most terrifying and brutal one, Terence Fletcher.
Terence recruits Andrew as a substitute for his orchestra because he saw something in Andrew, and if that something is there, he’ll bring it out by force. So Terence subjects Andrew to a level of emotional and psychological pressure that, viewed from the outside, would qualify as abuse, but which for Terence is the only way to produce geniuses—subjecting them to such crushing pressure that it brings out what even the genius didn’t know he had to give.

Even so, Whiplash isn’t a happy story about a student and his teacher conquering the world with their music, but rather the prelude to a tragedy; that’s why Charlie Parker is mentioned so often. La vi por primera vez con mi mamá cuando era pequeña; a las dos nos gustó tanto que un día que salimos al centro comercial, vimos una tienda superlujosa de música y ahí estaba, exhibida en toda la vitrina, una batería musical profesional. Bueno… ese fue mi regalo de Navidad y, aunque no me convertí en el próximo Buddy Rich, cómo disfrutaba las tardes tocando sin parar. Hace unos días la volví a ver después de tanto tiempo y necesitaba escribir sobre ella.
Whiplash nos cuenta una historia de obsesión, perfección e individualismo donde no basta con tener talento. Esta historia sigue a Andrew Neiman, un joven baterista que estudia en el prestigioso Conservatorio Shaffer de Nueva York.
