Daily Movie Recommendation – Altered States (1980)

If I need to believe my movie journal from years ago, I watched this movie in 2011, with my brother. The only thing I penned down about it afterwards was, translated from Dutch:

Bizarre movie with intriguing intro and strange twists. Suitable for whoever likes weird movies...

Looking at the above, I used three different words that have a similar meaning, all pointing to the fact that this is not your average movie. I also use the word 'intriguing'. I am a sucker for these kind of films.

If you like atypical stories and films, if you're into 80s cinema, horror, sci-fi and/ or thrillers, this is a film that you can't miss.

Highly recommended!

Have you seen this film? If so, how did you like it? Does it make you think of any other title?

##### Another Ken Russell movie that I would recommend people to watch is: Women in Love (1969)
If you're interested in more backstory – before or after watching Altered States - I would recommend you read [this great post](https://steemit.com/science/@alexbeyman/john-c-lilly-the-mad-scientist-who-gave-lsd-to-dolphins) by @alexbeyman with plenty of backstory on the scientist whose research inspired this movie and the book that it's apparently adapted from. Thank you, Alex!

I watched this one a year or so ago. I heard of it from a Terrence McKenna talk where they were discussing how terrible or inaccurate most psychedelic movies are. I thought it was kind of cool; I guess it's a little cartoonish, the scenes where Hurt has a psychedelic experience and becomes an ape temporarily.

A related movie I watched around the same time was The Emerald Forest.
