Films about family cannot be missed, one of them is this film, Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap. This is a film set in Batak culture that premiered late last year and can now be watched on Netflix. The day after its release on Netflix, this film became number 1 on Netflix and trending on twitter.

Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap

---- -----

This film tells the story of a Batak family on the outskirts of Lake Toba, Mr. Domu and Mamak Domu, who have four grown children. Three of their children, Domu (the eldest son), Gabe (the third son), Sahat (the youngest son), while Sarma (the second daughter) accompanies and takes care of their parents, even though they should taking on the job was the youngest son, Sahat.

Domu, the eldest son, will marry a Sundanese (different ethnic) woman in Jakarta. This is opposed by Mr. Domu. For Mr. Domu, as the eldest son, Domu must continue their clan. However, Domu is stubborn and still wants to marry the woman he loves. This made Mr. Domu angry and reluctant to talk to Domu again.

Gabe, the third son also migrates to Jakarta and works as a gag man. Mr. Domu doesn't like Gabe's job because he thinks it's embarrassing. Mr. Domu wants Gabe to become a lawyer by completing law school.

Sahat, the youngest son also migrated to Yogyakarta. After graduating from college he chose to live with a father and take care of his corn garden. Mr. Domu doesn't like Sahat's decision because Sahat should take care of them, not other people.

Meanwhile, Sarma, the second daughter, works as a civil servant who lives with her parents. However, Sarma actually wanted to become a chef. Because no one wants to take care of and live with his parents, Sarma throws his dream away.

This conflict between father and son is the common thread of this film. Mr. Domu is a portrait of an old-fashioned and patriarchal father. Mamak Domu is a portrait of a very patient mother. Because Mr. Domu was so stubborn, Mamak Domu had to harbor longing for his children. Because of this, Mr. Domu got the idea so that his children could go home and he could talk about the conflict between them.

This film tells the story of an ordinary family on the outskirts of Lake Toba, the largest lake in Indonesia. Therefore, in this film, there are a lot of various kinds of Batak culture displayed.

This film is executed very simply but the dialogue that is displayed is so emotional. This film is not the only film set in the Batak tribe, but I can guarantee that this film is the most emotional film.

I give 4,5 stars from 5 stars for these movie. Because I cried when the climax of this film took place. I don't know, even though I feel this film is less dramatic, but my tears seem to be unstoppable.

  • The Weakness

All the actors in this film play their characters very naturally, because almost all of the players are Batak ethnic people, maybe that's one of the reasons why the Batak feel in this film is so natural and feels very real.

But this movie has a weakness. I do not know how to explain it. I thought the weakness is in the dialogue that actors deliver, it's too dramatic.

This film shows us how imperfect families are in our country, where a father is just a lot against the wishes of his children and does not want to hear the slightest reason for the son to act like that. This is like the inner voice of children who are always restrained by their parents, where parents only think about what they want rather than the happiness of their children.
