The East Palace - Episode 2

Review by @vvodjiu · 9h · of The East Palace · 1 view

In the first episode, we were introduced to most of the characters in this story. Gu-cheon, a sarcastic spirit-slayer; Saeng-gang, a court lady who was born with the ability to hear spirits' voices, and the king's illegitimate daughter; The King, a ruthless ruler who kidnapped Gu-cheon to cast the spirit out of his palace; The Crown Prince, the king's last son who is now possessed by the spirit.

In the previous episode, Gu-cheon approached the spirit, then later realized it wasn't what he expected. The spirit, whom they thought was a simple pond spirit, is hiding something more sinister.

It was a dangerous encounter, leading Gu-cheon to ask for help and make a pact with another scary creature on the ceiling, a Gwi-mae. It's a soulless entity formed when there's great bad energy, grief, and greed in a certain place. They have no souls or personal grudges, so they can't be easily banished.

It was intense and heart-pounding. The pond spirit was badly injured after the Gwi-mae attacked and tried to suck its soul.

The Gwi-mae also attacked Gu-cheon after the pond spirit escaped. Good thing Saeng-gang, from the real world, sensed that there was something wrong in the ghost realm, so she pulled the rope connected to Gu-cheon. She clearly saved his life, but he was too naive to admit it, lol.

-- The little prince (Prince Yeongan) showed signs of improvement.

Gu-cheon believes that the pond spirit is still weak and won't bother the young prince for a while. They took this chance to investigate the royal family's secrets.

At the height of their investigation, they came across another Gwi-mae creature. It doesn't look scary at all, but Gu-cheon doesn't want to engage with it, suspecting it might be another type of dangerous creature that feeds off people's energy.

... but, this tiny creature keeps on following him. haha

Gu-cheon then realized it's a Ggeomeoksali, another creature that drains the Yang energy of the living. But I'm not gonna lie, it looks cute, I'd be willing to offer a little of my Yang energy to it, haha.

The two (Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang) keep digging for the truth. They came across more ghosts, and they learned about the corruption in the palace.

The Queen Dowager's dark secret was unravelled. The ghosts of the court ladies she buried in the salt house want revenge.

In my understanding, the ghosts were burned to death. That's why they possess fire energy and heat energy. They used water and sulfur to extinguish the ghosts and help them release their grudges against the Queen Dowager. By then, their souls can cross to paradise and be reborn.

Good for the ghosts, they can now rest in peace. But the Queen Dowager's life is still miserable, it's her life sentence.

Rating: 95/100
