Mi reseña sobre Amor Ciego (2001) | [ESP/ENG]

Review by @waralotito 🏆#23 🔥26 🎵2.9k 🎬34 · 3h · of Shallow Hal · 1 view

ENGLISH VERSION

My review of Shallow Hal (2001)

Hello Scrobble community, today I bring you this funny movie that also has some lessons on how people can see others based on their appearance.

So, roll the film!

🎬 A bit of context

It all begins with Hal, a man who had recently broken up with his girlfriend because she told him he was very superficial.

And it was true, because he always focused on others' appearances, but he had held this belief since childhood due to a misunderstood piece of advice given to him by a relative.

Until one day, he gets trapped in an elevator with a self-help guru, who hypnotizes him, making him see the inner beauty of people reflected in their physical appearance. That is to say, if a person had a very good heart, they would be reflected as someone very handsome on the outside.

So Hal continued his life as if nothing had happened, thinking that what had been done to him was just gossip. Until one day, sitting in a restaurant, he saw a beautiful woman with whom he started talking, and it was clear that they hit it off very well.

But something strange was happening, because it seemed that this young woman ate very quickly and wherever she sat, she broke things. Hal didn't pay much attention to it because he was super hypnotized by this woman. So much so that they started dating.

This young woman is named Rosemary, who started introducing him to her friends, whom he also found super attractive, and he thought he wouldn't have a chance with her because she seemed unattainable.

He also discovers that Rosemary was the daughter of Hal's boss, who in turn was very intrigued by the relationship they had started. He thought it was a joke or to get on his boss's good side, but he realized it wasn't.

Meanwhile, Hal's best friend is becoming increasingly worried because he saw his friend fixating on every person, and the truth is he started to distrust what the guru had done to him, so he goes to find him to fix the situation.

What do you think will happen to Hal? Was the girl really beautiful on the outside? Will the guru be able to fix what he did to Hal?

If you want to know what happens next, I invite you to watch the movie. And if you've already seen it, keep reading.

TRAILER:

⚠ ALERT: From now on, there will be many spoilers, so you have been warned.

♥ What I liked the most

I found it to be a super funny movie, and that's usually the case when the great Jack Black shows up, haha, there will always be comedy in his stories.

I think his and Rosemary's performances were great, because on one hand, Hal seemed not to understand what was happening with this girl: she ate a lot but didn't gain weight, broke chairs, but looked super skinny.

On the other hand, Rosemary, who had very low self-esteem, thought Hal was just playing a prank on her and that he would leave her at any moment.

One of the scenes I liked the most was when, upon exiting the elevator, Hal had a different look toward everyone. Obviously, this "effect" worked with people I didn't know yet, because those I already knew seemed normal to me.

Now, the first meeting with Rosemary was fun: she ordered a lot of things to eat, and Hal, impressed that she was so thin and beautiful, I think it was a direct hit to the heart, hehe.

Rosemary was a very chubby girl with very low self-esteem who, despite always being teased about her appearance, liked to help others, in health volunteer work, to help the poor, among other things.

She didn't have many friends, only those she met during her charitable activities, but it turned out that they also had some health issues: they used wheelchairs, crutches, or were elderly. The beautiful thing was seeing that Hal saw all of them as if they were models, that is, very beautiful on the outside.

She even saw her ex-boyfriend as someone tall, muscular, and handsome, haha, and Hal would get super jealous about it, even confronting her about why she worked with him and suggesting that maybe she wanted to get back together with him.

A scene that I found very beautiful and moving is when Hal accompanies Rosemary to help at the hospital and goes to the children who had their skin all burned, but he saw them all as very lovely and happy, that scene breaks your heart.

Another funny scene is when Rosemary's parents scold her for wearing such small and tight clothes, but she liked them a lot, so she ignored them. Hal is very impressed when he sees the size of his girlfriend's clothes and that they didn't fit her body, but he just let it go, haha.

At the end, when they finally removed that vision from Hal, he stopped seeing Rosemary clearly, he didn't even recognize her, and that hurt her a lot. Only at the end did he realize that he had been hypnotized to see people that way, so, before Rosemary goes on a long trip, Hal goes to find her.

He asks for forgiveness for everything he had done and tells her that if she wants to go on a trip, she can, but he will accompany her; she, very happy, agrees, and the two go on the trip.

☁ Some parts that made me think

Although it is a super funny movie, there are many lessons behind it.

I really like the perspective they give Hal, being able to see people with good hearts as very beautiful, but it also happened the opposite way, because he saw people with bad hearts as ugly or old.

Beyond appearance, this teaches us not to judge people by their looks; we must first get to know them before forming any kind of opinion.

That's why Hal managed to learn in this way that good people are shown by what they have inside. The truth is, it would be interesting to have that power, haha, because then you already know what kind of person you're getting to know.

That would save us a lot of time, haha, but since it's the old-fashioned way, we have to take the time to get to know them. But I think we should also get to know ourselves: sometimes we can judge others very harshly and possibly we are like that too, that is, we have those deficiencies or problems.

The truth is, it's a very beautiful movie that I recommend you watch; you'll surely have fun.

Here I conclude my review, so see you in my next post!
