  1. Film Review: Shallow Hal (2001)@drax907d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Line between being entertainingly irreverent and cringe worthy is very thin. Farrelly Brothers have danced on it while making their films, sometimes crossing to the other side, like with their 2001 comedy Shallow Hal.

Jack Black in his first starring role plays Hal Larson, man who doesn’t have many reasons to complain about his professional life, but whose personal life leaves much to be desired. Hal tends to pursue beautiful women that are, due to his relatively ordinary looks, likely to be be beyond his reach. Things change when, due to an accident, he remains stuck in elevator with famous self-help guru Tony Robbins (playing himself in cameo) who, after long conversations, becomes convinced that Hal might find happiness in romantic relationships if he starts seeing “inner beauty” in women. He decides to hypnotise him and, as a result, Hal meets Rosemary “Rosie” Shanahan (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), immensely beautiful woman with whom he would instantly fall in love and try to seduce. Everyone, including Rosie, is very surprised with Hal’s displays of love and affection, and there is good reason for that. Rosie is actually morbidly obese, which creates all kind of misunderstandings and even practical problems for Hal, who in his mind still sees her as ideal of beauty. Two of them nevertheless start dating, but it is only a matter of time before the circumstances and Hal’s friend Mauricio (played by Jason Alexander), envious of Hal’s happiness, conspire to shatter the illusion with heartbreaking results.

Peter and Bobby Farrelly have made their name with series of successful comedies that often featured dealt with various bodily fluids and challenged the established notions of good taste. At first glance, it looked like Shallow Hal might belong to the same category, but the film actually represented Farellys’ attempt to become kinder, gentler and more family-friendly. Inspired by their acquaintance and co-writer Sean Moynihan, who was blind, they made the story that tried to promote tolerance, criticise typically Hollywood obsession with looks and embrace concept of “inner beauty”. Farrellys probably had good intentions but the way their premise was put in practise in many ways compromised the film. The authors apparently couldn’t have resisted temptation to put some outrageous content which involves grotesquely burned children or genetic malformation. Almost all humour in the film is based on the difference between “inner” beauty that Hal sees, with Paltrow at the height of popularity playing star-like, and “outer” ugliness that Hal doesn’t see, but it forces Paltrow to play that character wearing grotesque makeup and extremely heavy fat suit. Jack Black tries a little bit too hard in his role, unlike Paltrow who does a solid job in a role that was actually quite unpleasant and physically demanded for Oscar-awarded actress. But the main issue the film has is conceptual – it, despite all noble declarations of its authors, makes fun of obese people. From today’s perspective Shallow Hal look “politically incorrect” and ends up mocking what appears to be majority of US population, and Zoomers and future generations, educated by advertisers promoting “Plus Size” models and Lizzo as new ideal of female beauty, might have serious problems understanding what was actually funny in this film.

    RATING: 4/10 (+)

  2. Superficiality Vs. Inner beauty: Shallow Hal (2001)@nanitaakane051266d

Looking for something to watch on the boring TV (I prefer the stream), I found that a movie I had seen as a child was starting; there was nothing else interesting and I kept watching it. Shallow Hal, is a production directed by the Farrelly brothers where Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow are the protagonists of this romantic comedy. I don't really like Black, he seems to me a very heavy guy (and I don't mean the weight), there have been few films where he is in that I have liked, this is one of those. And from the Farrelly brothers, I consider this to be one of the few productions I've seen of theirs where they leave a clear and direct message, without leaving out the comedy.

    Argument.

Hal is a typical superficial man who only looks for beautiful women to pass the time, without caring about how they might feel. One day he meets a kind of guru who promises him that from now on, he will only get beautiful and special women, seeing them for what they are inside.

    Argumento.

    World upside down.

After his short encounter with the famed guru, Hal feels like a renewed, new man and really only gets gorgeous women everywhere he goes. He obviously doesn't miss any opportunity to talk to all of them, but there's something he doesn't notice that others do: Hal is surrounded by women who are "horrible and out of his standards".

    sep2.jpg

Hal is made of wood and has fish ears.

Our protagonist can't understand why his best friend is only stunned by "the beauties" he introduces him to, he thinks he feels insecure seeing them so stunning. One day he meets the woman of his dreams: a showbiz blonde, graceful, intelligent, though "she has a very wrong and insecure image of herself". Hal sees Rosemary that way, but the truth is very different from that, she's an ungraceful fatty; she even says so repeatedly to Hal, but he doesn't understand what she means.

    sep2.jpg

"The mind sees what the heart feels."

Phrase I absolutely loved❤️. Mauricio, Hal's best friend, always questions why his friend can't understand that Rosemary is... "different", but whenever he (or whoever) so much as mentions something negative about her, Hal jumps like a tiger to defend his girl

On the other hand, Rosy allows Hal into her life, giving him the confidence to get to know her world. She volunteers at a children's hospital and is also in the peace corps. Hal gets to know this world of hers, and is fascinated, he thinks everything is very special and cute; he is totally convinced that Rosy has a beautiful heart and falls in love with her.

    sep2.jpg

    Pretending?

Hal upon meeting Rosy, didn't know she was his boss's daughter, which brought a wave of accusations to Hal because everyone believes he is taking advantage of the situation to get in good with the boss and move up the ladder. By the time he meets Rosemary's parents, Hal has his mind made up so that they sincerely like him and approve of his relationship with Rosy. The father himself doubts Hal's true intentions, but he puts him in his place, since his own father had spoken ill of his daughter. Hal's sincerity makes his father-in-law realize the mistake he has made with his daughter, and at the same time, he offers him a better position in his company.

    sep2.jpg

    ¿Fingir?

    Nothing limits.

In a few scenes we see a unique character: Walt. He has spina bifida and even with that condition (which many consider a "disability"), the guy is super nice, partying and is a multimillionaire. He's also a hottie with the ladies. What's the point of all this? The story of the movie also makes it clear that the complexities of life, our physique, are not determinant for people with some special conditions to be successful. Walt, besides being a magician, is a good friend and a kind person, he is also a volunteer in the same center and in the peace corps as Rosemary. Sounds like a very nice message to me.

    Nada limita.

    Crude reality.

Selfishness leads us to do unimaginable things. This is what Mauricio does (to me, besides being a complete idiot, he is the villain of the movie). I'm crumbles Hal's world, he can no longer see Rosy for her real physique no matter how much he's in love with her, he knows he'll be a jerk to her. Still, he takes a chance by going to see her before she went on a trip to the peace corps. These next scenes are kind of sad and murky, but they get a lot of laughs because since Hal doesn't know what Rosemary looks like, chubby who crosses his path, chubby who he'll jump on believing she's the love of his life. To his surprise, upon seeing Rosemary face to face, Hal is stunned... he sees what she's really like and yet he still thinks she's beautiful.

    sep2.jpg

    Cruda realidad.

It may be a bit of a fresh story, perhaps typical of the early 2000s, but I think it leaves a very clear and strong message even for today, where we are surrounded by appearances and filters that make us look perfect, but the reality is that we are not like that. It is a blow to vanity, to superficiality and a motivation to self-acceptance and self-love, to healthy love between couples. To see two actors so different in their styles interacting so well, is a great achievement, because even so they still maintain what characterizes them and they made it work very well. So if you ask me, I'll tell you as always: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".

    sep2.jpg

  3. Shallow Hal (2001). A romantic comedy that teaches us to love outside the superficiality...!@pialejoana2396d

People often see love with eyes of superficiality, without noticing that the important thing is not outside a person. But rather inside...

    Source

    A little about the story:

One of the main characters is Hal Larson; a man not very handsome, superficial and above all demanding in terms of physics. Another character, very incident in the film is Mauricio Wilson, Hal's best friend and also a man ruled by superficiality. Both have bad habits going to discos, parks and restaurants, trying to get highly attractive couples; But they always fail to conquer. Until one day, Hal finds himself in a small accident with a speaker and hypnotizes him; placing the quality of seeing people physically, as they are inside. That is, if the person had good feelings, physically it would be beautiful; and so on vice versa.

In that period of time, he meets Rosemary who is the daughter of his obese boss and who also suffers from the same condition. But, Hal sees her as a beautiful, thin girl who has fallen in love with her since she first saw him. I remind you, that she looks very pretty, because Rosemary was a person of an immense noble heart. Hal wants to be with her, however various situations happen that test mutual feelings. One of them is Mauricio's tension over Hal's relationship with "la fat". In addition, Rosemary's father also thinks that Hal is only with her because he wants a promotion within the company. At the end of the movie, Rosemary decides to leave Hal, because she looks disappointed and thinks it was just a relationship of interest. But Hal, shows that what he feels for Rosemary, goes beyond the physical.

    My opinion:

It's a movie with funny airs, which really is enjoyable and entertaining. It has a good cast and the story it develops, leaves no spaces for boredom. It is a combination master, romanticism and comedy, in a harmoniously balanced way.
