  1. Film Review: Kung Fu Hustle (2004)@drax743d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Two decades ago, when the globalisation was seen as permanent fact of life, Chinese cinema was attempting to take its slice of international market pie. This trend was twofold – through grand period epics, usually associated with mainland China, and through more genre films, like comedies, action and gangster film associated with Hong Kong, One notable example of the later trend is the 2004 period martial arts comedy, Kung Fu Hustle, directed by Stephen Chow.

Chow, who also took part in writing and production, stars as Sing, a petty street criminal in 1940s Shanghai, who dreams of joining the notorious Axe Gang, led by Brother Sum (Danny Chan Kwok-kwan). Sing and his friend Bone (played by Lam Chi-chung) are drawn into the conflict between the Axe Gang and the residents of Pigsty Alley, a slum ruled by the Landlady (played by Yuen Qiu) and Landlord (played by Yuen Wah), who are, like many of their tenants, actually skilled martial arts masters. As the conflict escalates, Sing discovers that he possesses perfect kung fu skills, which he uses to join the battle against the Axe Gang.

Stephen Chow is one of the most prominent stars of Hong Kong cinema, who gained international fame with his 2002 comedy, Shaolin Soccer. This success had a lot to do with mixing martial arts with the world’s most popular sport. Kung Fu Hustle takes somewhat more localised approach, inspired by Hong Kong cinema, and works as parody of popular Hong Kong wuxia films, as well as some lesser-known comedies from past decades.

The film's visual style is a key aspect of its success. Chow combines impressive martial arts sequences with slapstick humour, enhanced by a large budget for Hong Kong standards. The result is a film that often resembles a cartoon, with gravity-defying wirework and CGI. The action and dark humour, which includes some potentially disturbing violence, can be off-putting for some viewers, but the film's surreal quality is part of its charm.

Chow also pays homage to various films, including Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, and the Wachowskis' The Matrix. The latter is not surprising, given that Yuen Woo Ping, the legendary martial arts choreographer, worked on both films. The film's dance numbers, inspired by 1930s Hollywood musicals, add another layer of surreality.

The acting in Kung Fu Hustle is generally good, with standout performances from the Yuen Qiu and Yuan Hwa. However, the film suffers from predictability and an unnecessary over-sentimental subplot involving a mute street vendor played by Huang Shengyi. Despite these flaws, Kung Fu Hustle became a great hit, both domestically and internationally, including in North America where two very different English language versions – subtitled and dubbed - xist.

Kung Fu Hustle is a unique and entertaining film that showcases Stephen Chow's ability to blend martial arts, comedy, and action. While it may not be perfect, its surreal quality and impressive visual style make it a standout in the world of martial arts cinema.

Kung Fu Sion, Source of Image Edited with Paint

Kung Fu Hustle also known as Kung FU Sion is a film whose central topic is martial arts battles, taken to a slightly fantasy terrain that takes over the film as the plot progresses and ends up dominating the screen with a touch of inspiration in that millenary Buddha.

These fantasy features could be considered the surface of the film because what really ends up dominating and being the core of the story is the personality of each of the characters because despite having a well marked protagonist, it is a choral group where everyone shines, even the characters that I consider tertiary have scenes that remain in the mind, I still laugh with those moments, what an enjoyable film.

There is a couple in the film called Romeo Kung and Juliet FU that take the film to another level because they take everything that structurally composes the film as they battle, they are comical, they interact strongly with the rest of the characters besides the protagonist and villains, I know that the character called Sing is in itself the protagonist but this couple takes too much plot of the film and there are moments where I consider they are the real protagonists as they allow the whole plot line to develop and the transition between one scene and another is smooth and enjoyable to the viewer.

The chemistry between both actors is powerful but the actress named Yuen Qiu who plays Julieta Fu shines much more for her explosive personality, temperamental, the way she smokes that cigarette that visually closes her battle style plus a total striking look with her hair arrangements that reminds me of a character named Doña Florinda.

    image.png

    image.png

    Martial Arts, Source of Image

Now the amazing thing is that all of the above is overshadowed by the power of her voice that dominates the rest of the characters, her partner in the film Romeo Kung played by Yuen Wah fits with her as he has a quiet personality but very mischievous making Juliet explode even more in his temperament and this is fun to watch.

The film could have touches of manga or anime inspiration, I think it could be associated with them because there are battles where the director uses slow motion to make or emulate a kind of manga or comic vignette making good use of special effects that I think are very well in film thus enhancing specific key scenes visually during the battle and that provide much to the viewer to understand graphically the battle styles in various fighters.

There are moments when the effects do not look good but I think the director does it with all purpose because it takes advantage of the fact that the film also has a comic core and those scenes go unnoticed because they make us laugh which I consider is a success because that is the director's goal, to make us laugh with scenes out of reality that contrast with what we are being told taking us out of reality at times and giving us in turn to understand that the illogical, the confusion will be natural during the film.

A criticism falls on one of the villains called Brother Sum that seems to me a buffoon with very little grace, has good moments and a striking personality that falls completely, is forgotten when you see the visual and expressions of the other villains, my problem with him is that I do not see him as an enemy of hierarchy, I get to his position by grace and grace of the script because I do not see him at all be what they want to tell us, I see him as a thief with some dancing grace that outside of that does not contribute anything.

Kung Fu Sion is a film with 7 out of 10 in this part of the review without spoilers as it offers an adventure with laughs which will guide us through battles between martial arts masters varied and legendary where the personality of each is the greatest weight, the best success of the film which closes with a powerful villain who visually is not at all pleasing to the eye but is consistent with its legendary technique that will crush in a very pleasant way the expectations of the viewer.

Julieta Fu, Gif of Peakd source

The part of the review begins with spoilers to comment on the scene that I liked the most of the film and characters that remained pleasantly in my mind.

The best of the film by far is Juliet Fu, this character has two scenes that are visually compelling battles and wow they have a lot of style, if it is true that she is what I like the most but everything in these scenes captivates including the villains.

The choreographies for the battles, the martial arts styles that each one dominates including the music because two of the villains that are going to confront her and her husband use a stringed musical instrument whose sound cuts like a guillotine.

Graphically it is reflected with some demons carrying swords which are shattered by El Grito de Julieta Fu that in the film its technique comes from a martial art called Lion's Roar that is based on condensing all a lung power, concentrate it in the Thorax and expel it as a sonic wave, truly the best of the film.

Not only happens once, if not twice this scream full of style that consumes his cigarette and poses, very important this, the poses that her husband performs because he is very quiet, only accompanies him gesturally with his poses and is spectacular because then as a guardian in the second battle that performs the cry, serves as support to amplify it with the bell against The Beast.

The latter is the main villain who visually looks scary and simple at the same time in sandals, good work by the actor Leung Siu-lung who takes all my recognition because I did not like him at all at the beginning but then scale when we see him battle, he has no mercy, he is treacherous, cowardly, mocking, the way he tells Juliet FU that her scream is kittenish until she uses the bell and makes a fool of him, this moment strategically speaking I liked it because it is not only physically battle, the bell was used as a visual resource in special effects that sodomized the Beast.

A detail to highlight with the villain is that he looks disgusting due to his legendary technique that is of Rana and leaves me thinking because the level of training and dedication he has is undeniable, he is defeated by the script that indicates Sing as a Legendary Born Warrior of the Buddha Palm since from one scene to another he is the greatest expert in martial arts without a hint of training, however The Beast if he trained to reach the level he has despite being a creeping coward, I highlight that in him.

The latter is the main villain who visually looks scary and simple at the same time in sandals, good job by the actor Leung Siu-lung who gets all my recognition because I did not like him at all at the beginning but then scale when we see him battle, he has no mercy, he is treacherous, cowardly, mocking, The way he tells Julieta FU that her scream is kittenish until she uses the bell and makes him look ridiculous, strategically speaking I liked this moment because it is not just a physical battle, the bell was used as a visual resource in special effects that sodomized the Beast.

A scene that hooks me totally in the film are the three fighters against the musical villains, what a display of techniques, besides the homosexual tailor is extremely funny because he pretends to be fragile but he is a very powerful opponent with his ring technique, the bamboo battle master makes a physical and visual display with his technique but both of them looked old and I had no problems with their deaths, who if gave me regret was the expert in close combat that cut the head of such a great and young fighter, this if that gave me much regret because he was vilely hunted.

Kung Fu Sion a harmonious film in battles for its music elements that seem to go unnoticed but are very present, I liked that, those musical villains are pure fantasy and the use of a bell as an element of mass destruction make me enjoy the eardrum destroying screams of the Great Juliet Fu and a soft ending with a mute girl and her lollipop that touches heart, I wish they had given more development to that plot because it was very nice to see.

I dedicate each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess we called her chiquito who is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence IS valuable and the most beautiful thing that will ever exist in my heart and soul.

  4. Kung Fu Hustle: It's not what you think@gooddream2958d

This movie was out for a very long time before I ever watched it because I was turned off by the name of the film. This is not your average low-budget martial arts film but rather, one of the best movies I have ever seen. Once again though, this movie is not in English that I am aware of, so you are going to need to read it.

    qpJWj6MI6VLRt9bGbJVZtmFvqWw.jpg

The story follows two friends Sing and Bone, who are just kind of low-life con artists who try to intimidate people by pretending to be members of the notorious Axe Gang (bear with me, it sounds dumb I know.) These cons have not often worked out for them but then one day they make the horrible mistake of trying to score free haircuts in the slum that is actually called Pig Sty Alley.

The group of people in Pig Sty Alley including their ruthless landlady is actually one of the main focuses of the film because even though they all appear to be a bunch of poor and feeble inhabitants, they actually are hiding great power in their ranks. The landlady is one of the best characters in the film and even through translation, is extremely funny.

    kung-fu-hustle-3.jpg

This is a Hong Kong film and appears to have had a massive budget because the special effects are extremely well-done. It is estimated that over 2/3 of the time spent on the film was spent choreographing and filming the fight sequences, which incorporate incredibly complicated wire work (I don't know what else to call it, think Crouching Tiger, or the Matrix.)

The fight scenes are a major draw to the movie, but the combination of great characters, a good story, and seriously funny situations make this a film that stays entertaining the whole way through. The transformation of Sing (played by Stephen Chow) from low-life loser to respectable hero throughout the movie is actually quite touching as well.
kungfuhustle_stills06.jpg before, when he was trying to rip off the village

kung_fu_hustle_a.jpg and after, defending the same village Stephen Chow is a very gifted individual because he not only pulled off a great starring role but he also directed the movie, and helped write and produce it (I'm guessing he was a very busy boy in the early 2000's.)

Again, i don't think the trailer does the movie justice. You'll just have to take my word on this one

It won a ton of awards (in the Hong Kong Film Awards) including Best Picture and is ranked as the 28th best Chinese Language film of all time.

In your mind, is that reason enough to see it?
