The Weekend Away | Review

Review by @wolfofnostreet · 1603d · of The Weekend Away

Two best friends decide to go on a weekend getaway to Croatia and it's the perfect vacation for a new mum and a recent divorcee until it all goes wrong when one of them goes missing.

The Weekend Away was released on March 3, 2022, and is currently at the #4 spot on my Netflix. It is a thriller based on a book of the same name by Sarah Alderson. It stars Leighton Meester, Christina Wolfe, Ziad Bakri, Luke Norris, and Amar Bukvić.

The Plot

Beth, a new mum, is convinced by her best friend to go on a weekend trip to Croatia to cool off and spend time together. While they are there and having dinner, Beth reveals her marriage troubles to Kate who tries to convince her to leave her husband if she's unhappy.

Kate suggests they go clubbing and Beth decides to loosen up and go with the flow. At the club, they meet two guys and Kate urges Beth to have a one-night stand with one of the guys.

The next morning, Beth wakes up to find that Kate is missing and she has a blurry memory of the night before. She reports the case to the police who do not take her seriously and accuse her of being on drugs.

She takes matters into her hands and goes searching for the two guys from the club with the help of her taxi driver from the night before. The two guys admit to being con-artists but not killers and they had an alibi. The police finally step in and Kate's body is discovered and Beth becomes a primary suspect for the case.

With Beth's foggy memory, it's hard for the police to take her seriously as her story keeps changing but she uncovers details about Kate and the night of her death that leaves her guessing the motives of everyone involved.

My Thoughts

This movie had a lot of suspense and it kept me guessing who the killer was. It wasn't a great movie, don't get me wrong, but the guessing game makes up for how terrible it is, at least a bit. My top guess turned out to be correct but that is not enough to make me like the movie still.

Beth kept doing dumb stuff and could have handled matters better. This dumb female lead character stereotype in thriller movies is such a bore. She could have made smarter decisions and it would have been a good movie. Her actions ruined it for me.

Asides from her, I think every other character wasn't bad at all. I liked the casting and story, and the attempt to get us off the edge of our seats. I also liked the scenery and it made me add visiting Croatia to my bucket list.

I'd rate it 5/10 and would recommend if you're curious and in the mood to yell at an annoying lead.

Have you seen The Weekend Away? What do you think?

Thanks for reading!

Haha, I see you didn't think it was that nice, to me it was a pleasant watch after not finding much enjoyable to watch lately regarding movies. This one came at the perfect moment when I just needed to watch something without thinking too much and I enjoyed it. I think finding a great movie is hard nowadays so maybe my expectations are a bit lower as they once were haha.

Although I have not seen him, this type of plot catches my attention. For some reason I'm a compulsive fan of suspense and puns where you have to discover what happens in a movie like this... I'm intrigued by the fact that I don't remember what happened and precisely the night where she perished.

Oof, annoying dumb leads can totally kill the mood and a movie. We need more thrillers and horror movies where folks take smart decision.

Sinister and The ring comes to mind as two that the lead was smart but things goes south for them

Nice and short review! Great for those moments where you are looking for something to watch but not in the mood to read a lot about each movie

I would give it lesser 4/10 maybe.. it was too predictable for me.
