This would be my first time reviewing an animation and I'm really excited that I chose Nimoma to be my first. This animation was released on the 14th of June and I happen to be making a review about it one month and a few days later.
Sometime last week, I got a phone call from a friend who I like to address as my movie plug,hehe. We kept chit chatting and along the line, he asked if I had seen Nimona. My response was an obvious no. He praised the movie for minutes but then again, I didn't budge, no pressure after all. Eventually, I got the movie and yesterday night I decided to watch it in a bid to calm my nerves as I had a really hectic day yesterday.
About The Movie
As you may have guessed, Nimona is the name of one of the characters in the movie. A knight is framed for killing the queen and there is only one person who can help prove his innocence–Nimona.
The movie is a combination of various genres; action, adventure, science, fantasy, comedy, thriller, drama,you name it. The movie has an amazing screenplay. It is one of those animations that keeps you glued to your screen from the start to finish as every scene unravels a new and interesting storyline.
Cast
Chloe Grace Moretz as Nimona
Nimona is a fearless shapeshifter who doesn't want anything more than to be accepted for who she is. She plays the role of a girl who is dreaded because of her special abilities. Everyone sees her as a monster but she proves them otherwise.
I really loved the way this character played her role. Not too violent and not too soft. She ensured she didn't take anything too seriously nor did she overlook the littlest details. Her aim was to be a sidekick but in the end, she became something more than a sidekick.
Riz Ahmed as Ballister
Ballister was a commoner and the good guy who got framed for killing the queen. All he wanted to do was be a trailblazer for other commoners but he was framed and had to find a way to prove his innocence. With Nimona on his side, he embarks on a life changing journey.
Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius
First of all, this character's name got me giggling for a minute but again, his name fits his personality perfectly. Ambrosius who is also called golden boy is Ballister's one and only true friend from the palace. Ambrosius is also a knight who believes so much in his friend but has to abide by the oath he had taken.
Frances Conroy as The director
The director is the lady in charge. She trains the knights to become fearless men and women but again, she proves the fact that the villains are always the prettiest and most coordinated.
The director has a really interesting character as she takes control after the queen has been killed. She works tirelessly to bring the accused to justice even when he was her favourite knight.
Opinion.
I have seen some other animations but I must say that Nimona surpasses the rest I have seen. It could be the fact that I've seen lots of regular animations that are just there to teach a lesson but Nimona is different.
The movie teaches a lesson and also evokes lots of emotions. If you feel like no animation could make you shed a tear, then try watching Nimona. It's been ages since an animation got me a bit emotional and trust me when I say that I didn't see it coming.
One of my favourite scenes from the movie was the part where Nimona said "you make a pretty good bad guy" to Ballister and Ballister kept a very straight and emotionless face. That scene was one of the many hilarious sciences.
Recommendation
I would highly recommend the movie to anyone who wants to have a feel of different genres in one piece of animation. To reiterate, it is one movie that would keep you guessing till the end when the answers are brought to light. The movie would definitely change your perspective about monsters and heroes. With that I would give the animation an 8.5/10 rating, yes, it was that marvellous. If you eventually check it out, I would love to hear your views on it.
